Yes in his younger years he is one of the best Filipino singer we had, he had a soft clear voice. I assure you as a 60 year old fan of his, his songs gives us a wonderful feelings hearing his songs. Though he has Chinese blood he is Filipino to us in our hearts. Plus the fact that he was born here in the Philippines.

His song, Christmas in our Hearts resonates with a lot of Filipinos because Filipinos love to be with their families especially during the Christmas season. About 10% of the population are overseas workers. So even if we cannot be together physically, we celebrate Christmas together in our hearts. He has a video singing the song with his grown children.

Jose Mari Chan started his career in later years of 1960s. His first hit was "Deep In My Heart". He was dubbed then as Cliff Richard of the Philippines because he sounded like the legendary British singer. Cliff Richard is the second top selling British artist, next only to the Beatles. One of the most popular songs of Cliff Richard was "Constantly" released in 1964. There is a video of Cliff Richard in KZbin singing that song. You can compare his voice to Jose Mari Chan's. For me, "Beautiful Girl" is the best song Jose Mari Chan composed although he became famous with the song "Deep In My Heart".

He is best remembered for the christmas songs but his earlier songs are beautiful and timeless. Beautiful Girl was the most well known by the younger generation but Refrain, Afterglow, Deep in my Heart were such beautiful classics that I grow up with.
