First week of May 2024 has great news: UP #6925 has been acquired by Midwest Overland Rail Preservation Society, LN #152 progress gets exciting, Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad #5 makes progress, Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad has more epic news, and more news. Wow. Hope the Siemens American Pioneer 220 doesn't suffer similar problems to the Avelia Liberty

What is the most exciting news for railroad preservation that you have ever heard of either now or in the past?

The new launch of PRR 1361’s restoration back in June 2021.

@@TranscontinentalRailfan in terms of stuff in my lifetime, which basically is the 21st-century Thus far I would say it would’ve been either the announcement of the restoration of big boy 4014 the commencement of actual progress on the restoration of the Mark twain zephyr, or the announcement of and the gaining of significant progress by the T1 trust. That’s just when counting the United States because if I were to pick other countries, then I would also include the completion and the first runs of A1 peppercorn tornado. Also, I’ve heard a few brand new steam engines have been built since then in Britain and I think you mentioned one, but two more were finished. Namely, these are reproductions of great western railway locomotives. One of them is named Lady of legend, and the other is named Breton grange. I must say that I am also excited for when the A1 peppercorn trust finishes their new locomotive LNER 2007 Prince of Wales.

Last week, news also came out that the FRA-approved PTC system presently in use on CPKC 2816 will also be applied to Santa Fe 2926 AND 3751! While I doubt this addition will bring BNSF or Amtrak any closer to allowing these two engines to do public excursions on any of their mainlines, it is entirely possible, hopefully, that these two may be able to run elsewhere with this software, such as along the New Mexico-owned line over Raton Pass or possibly coming together for a steam reunion on the Grand Canyon Railway.

Also with 3751 and 2926 having full PTC and can go to the Grand Canyon Railway, they can work with BNSF on them leading ferry moves on their lines. It’s really the very high insurance costs that make mainline excursions not economically feasible currently.

And maybe then they can do a reprisal of the 2002 NRHS Convention scenes where 3751 and 4960 doubleheaded an excursion and then posed side-by-side at the South Rim station
