The J-Max is an excellent grinder. Too be honest that drop from 8.8 microns to 8 microns is negligible, 8.8 microns is more than enough for any Espresso needs. The Utra looks a little more sexy with its lady curves and the new travel case is also nice, but if you are happy with your J-Max and the way it preforms, i would say save your money. If the new case is something that you like, you can actually buy that separately, but you would also need to get the S series handle for your grinder, or it wont fit into the case. Burrs look a bit different, right? On its website, 1zpresso generally uses same burr picture in comparison section, if they’re the same, J-ultra has another one. They also look a bit different, judging by the picture itself. Interested to see how well grinder performs. I’m considering buying Je-plus. Not like I’m hating my J-max, but I prefer a sweet espresso. Wonder if should wait for a J-ultra reviews?

I have the J-Ultra in stock at the moment. The inner burrs are the same type and size as the regular J-Max, but the hex cap that fits the burrs to the burr shaft is missing on the J-Ultra. I am not sure why they did not include this metal hex disc, it might be to help with static and retention? but i am not really sure. The micron size is 8 microns and the J-Max is 8.8 microns, so the Ultra is slightly less than the J-Max and you have a slightly bigger grind range to play with. Like i mentioned before, the J-Max and the J-Ultra are really Espresso grinders. They can obviously be used for other brew types, but once you grind more course than drip coffee makers, you are going to notice the flavour profile is different to a Pour over grinder like the JE and the K series grinders. Even the JX grinder and the Q2 Heptagonal has arguably sweeter and clearer clarity than the J-Max and Ultra, because they all use the same 7 core burrs (JE had 6 core burrs, but the bigger microns dont change the flavour as much as the finer microns with the J-Max and Ultra). I am nearly finished a quick video showing the J-Ultra and talking about some of the differences between the Ultra and the Max, so that should be uploaded in the next couple of days.

@@mightymightyironhead I see, will check it out, see how it looks in the hand and how well it sits in it, with new, rounder body. But, if the burrs are the same, then there might not be a reason to buy it, since my J-max works great. I have my Pico + J-Max setup for close to two years now, both espresso and cappuccino I make absolutely slaughters everything you can drink in my town. Also, lots of good roasters, stopped using magazine coffee and will probably never buy it again. On another note, have you noticed any difference in quality in the standard 18g baskets? I bought a 12g basket and was surprised to see how better it was made. It’s better polished, holes are bigger and more consistent. Maybe recently made 18g baskets will also be better than the old ones? Cheers.

damn, 1zpresso can't leave well enough alone and just keep their models around lol. I have 2 of the J-max's and love them. this looks to be a fine tuning of the J-max more than anything. doubt anyone will get an improvement out of 8.8 vs. 8 microns, but for newbies it will be the best espresso hand grinder out of their line up. Almost want to sell the mint "silver" one I have buy one of these to experiment with. explains why 1zpresso dumped the J-max the last couple of months for $159 flat

Yes 1Zpresso have been busy. It can get a little confusing though, they produce very good grinders and the grinders are well received and people like the grinders, then they discontinue the well established grinder and re release the same grinder with a slight feature and cosmetic change, then change the name so people get even more confused. They have discontinued the JX, JX-Pro, K-Max and J-Max just in the last half of this year. I also loose quite a lot of money when they drop the price for their grinders to get rid of their stock, they have done this a few times now and its usually right after i have just ordered a lot of stock, so my markup is pretty much cut in half. I also wonder about changing the 8.8 microns so 8 microns, i do think that a slight amount extra at the fine grind level is not really going to improve the grinders ability to dial in for Espresso, its already got a huge grind range for that. This seems like its just an after thought and because the adjustment dial makes the grinder and the burr shaft a little bigger, so you could get slightly more room for adjustment and slightly more microns, however they could have just gone step less at that point. The J-Ultra is a really nice grinder though. It looks pretty much the same as the K-Ultra. The adjustment dial is better and feels better in your hand. When you are holding the grinder, it also feels better and you don't have to re position you hand so that you don't move the adjustment dial. It also includes the new travel case and the S series handle, so its a pretty nice package.

@@mightymightyironhead fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you and I talked extensively about the X-pro when it came out and were the reason I bought one. Now I feel the need to get a J-Ultra lol. All those little niceties you mentioned are things I've bitched about my J-max. I didn't realize they discontinued so many models. I have the K-Ultra and the K-max and there's just enough difference that I wish they had kept the K-max. the K-max is my favorite drip/pourover grinder by a large margin, even above the commandante. but it DOES make sense, with the J and K ultras coming out there is no need for a K-max, K-pro, JX, JX pro J-max.... especially since the x-pro and X-ultra have taken over the middle ground and made the JX and JX Pro obsolete

I don't really care for the S handle. For me, that's too many moving parts, that are subject to wear over time.

Yes i am also not really a fan of this type of handle. I was pretty skeptical when 1Zpresso released this handle, but after checking it, the handle is pretty solid. I have used mine quite a few times and i have not had any issues with it and it feels pretty solid still, but i have not really folded the handle up many times, so hopefully over time i wont have any issues.
