Will rebuild my 1zz eventually when it is totally run down and I’m still looking for c59 to go with. How much material can I shave off the head to ensure valves clearance? Haynes manual didn’t say.
@RelentlessRacingAJ

There’s a marker on the bottom of the cylinder head which tells you how far u can shave off. If u are uncomfortable w that u can measure it w clay or do a piston to valve measurement

Thank so much for this series! I just bought a 1.8L 1ZZ-FE w/ 100k miles and didnt do enough research on the 8th gen Corolla but now that i see how to do the rering process im not as anxious about doing this work as a preventative measure! I do have a question as to what you would suggest in terms of a tool set or other necessary tools for doing work like this. I only have a 25piece ratchet set and that is it. So id love to get your advice for a young aspiring mechanic enthusiast starting out to do engine and trans work! Speaking of trannys.. could you or do you have a c56/c59 rebuild video as i need to do a clutch kit and i figured while im at it maybe ill do a rebuild on the gear box? Also have a 2000 camry w/ 300k iv been maintaining and want to do a rebuild on that engine and trans as well! Please let me know and keep up the videos this is some of the best iv seen!

Thx for the kind words and appreciate you watching and commenting. Pls subscribe. Tools are a difficult subject bc if u buy cheap tools now and get expensive tools later, you will spend more money in the long run. So, is it better to bite the bullet once and buy quality tools to begin w or go the other route? You will have to make that decision on you own. However, there is a secret to buying high end tools at a discount. Take a community college automotive course and certain programs offer a 50-52% discount on Snap On & Matco. When I did it was $7-7.5k worth of tools for ea company. If they take PayPal credit you are golden. With respect to transmission vids, I haven’t uploaded any vids in quite some time bc I am focused on finishing my projects. Unfortunately, filming and editing vids the way I do them takes an incredible amount of time, which I don’t have right now. However, I do have lots of footage to edit… including transmission footage. When will I get to them is unknown. I recommend reading the Bible (OE service manual). The transmission disassembly and assembly is documented very well in the Bible. Good luck 🍀 👊

@@RelentlessRacingAJ that is such a good hack dude thank you so much! I am 100% gonna do that!! Appreciate your time w/ the build and advice sir, I am subscribed and I'll be looking forward to your next uploads, maybe another OG Toyota super car? 😎 I hear they are gonna unveil the MR2 in 2025 and the concepts so far look incredible! I'm a big Toyota fan and wanna find an AE86 Corolla GT-S before the rumored revival but it's hard to come by these days sadly. What's your thoughts on LSD for a 5 speed? I have an open differential now but the idea behind a LSD seems beneficial so I'm not constantly wearing my clutch when I'm on hills. I'm not confident enough to do the ebrake trick 😆 thanks again 🍻

Hold up! please lmk why lubricate the camshafts and valve lifters with grease? Which grease is this, and doesn't it gum up after? I really want to take care of my old 1zz that was just rebuilt. It has 255k kms and I need another 200k kms out if it! thanks.

That’s just assembly lube which I thought I identified in the video. I used the same assembly lube on the bottom end. It is important to use assembly lube so parts are not dry during start up after a fresh rebuild. Good quality assembly lube does not gum up. Pls subscribe. Thx AJ 👊
@Odamate
@Odamate Жыл бұрын
Do you have to prime the oil pump when installing it? I've heard that I have to take the pump apart and fill the two gears with assembly lube so it doesn't run dry and can create pressure faster but is it really necessary? I mean, couldn't I just take the old one off and put the new one on and do nothing else, right?
@RelentlessRacingAJ
@RelentlessRacingAJ Жыл бұрын
You do not have prime the oil pump when installing it. However, b4 starting the motor, I recommend removing the spark plugs, detaching ur fuel injectors, attaching a battery charger to the battery, and rotating the motor via the starter for 10 seconds and pausing. Then repeat a total of 5 times. This will get oil where it needs to be b4 starting.

Head bolt torque seems to be wrong. I know there is a manual that specifies this, but using this procedure the head bolts don't get tight enough. Its 49nm, then 90 degrees, then another 90 degrees. If you skip the final 90 degrees the rebuild will fail. when removing the cylinder head, you can feel its very tight but when rebuilding and you just make one 90 degree turn for the head bolts you can tell its clearly not tight enough. I'm not sure why some manuals and some youtubers suggest that you half ass the headbolt job.
@RelentlessRacingAJ
@RelentlessRacingAJ Жыл бұрын
I noted in a comment below the 29 ft-lbf is a typo... it should be 36 ft-lbf. Per the OEM service manual on page EM-46 it reads to torque in several passes to 36 ft-lbf and then rotate an additional 90 degrees. Get off the keyboard and quit writing incorrect info on the internet.

Being that you decked the block and opened up the bores, how did you compensate for bore and stroke?

No expectations from anyone. Just thinking the compression ratio changed. Wondering if you added a thicker head gasket to compensate for the change 🤷🏽‍♂️
@RelentlessRacingAJ
@RelentlessRacingAJ 2 ай бұрын
@@makiikedandrew lots of motors are designed to be rebuilt… meaning the deck and or head has the allowance for machining. In fact, there are machine indicators casted into the head and block. Also, the change in compression ratio is negligible when you only remove thousandths off the block and head.

@@RelentlessRacingAJ lol sorry, I should've specified. The bolts on the caps that hold down the cams - they're called "bearing caps" and no.1 is the big one on the side where the camgears are, with the 12mm bolts, and no3 is referred to the smaller caps with 10mm bolts - the service manual is saying 17ft lbs for the bigger cap with 3x 12mm bolts, and 10 ftlbs for the smaller ones with 10mm bolts.
