I really appreciate you putting out this video! I replaced the head gasket in my 04 Corolla following your detailed instructions. I made sure the timing marks on the cam sprockets and the crank sprocket all line up just like in your video. However, after I installed the timing chain cover and the crank pulley, the mark on the pulley appears to be indicating 10 (clockwise direction if you’re facing the pulley) past the 0 mark on the TCC. Did I do something wrong and what do I have to do to remedy this? I’m from CA and I believe my car’s made in the states (but I’m not the first owner) 😅.
@RelentlessRacingAJ3 ай бұрын
I appreciate the kind words. The marks and crank pulley should be dead nuts… that’s why it’s called timing. It must be precise. Is the TCT on properly? Did u start w the crank at TDC b4 adding the timing chain? Did the crank move when u were putting the chain on? Hopefully, she is out of the car and you can examine it carefully. You may have missed a step or something moved while u were fiddling w the chain. Since this is a 1ZZ there is a lot of bond used to install the timing chain cover. I suggest going through the process again, but dry fit it. Otherwise, put everything together w no bond. Verify everything is timed properly. Once you are complete, verify it holds timing by rotating her twice… the timing should still be good. Then, take her apart and do it again, but w bond. Have fun and good luck. Pls subscribe. Like your video! Your MR2/S looks very low mileage and certainly not run in the salts of winter that kill so many vehicles. How many miles? @7:23 in video, even the bolts and head are in new condition, but later, the cam cover looks old....? Is block painted?....the more I watch, the more I see this engine has been serviced b/4 this video...? Also oil pan does not looks Toyota OEM.....what is up? Do not know of any bearing issues with 1zz/2zz unless oil low. I purchased 2zz with over 100k miles and looked like a turd. Inside, bearings perfect, bores very minimal wear. Still ringed and added all bearings to Toyota color/number code, measured and confirmed with Plastigauge. Any idea on head-gasket failure? After further watching, not head gasket, engine was run low on oil and damaged bearings and bores furthest from the oil pump. Low oil caused damage and circulated through the full oiling system. PS: Liked that you pointed out TDC- Compression, vs TDC Exhaust. A timing nightmare when setting valve clearance. Final Q: After all this work and pulling engine, why did you not go with the 2ZZ-GE? Much more fun and more reliable. Early 1ZZ-FE's had CAT and oil-ring issues....I know this b/c I purchased an 01 MR2/S with under 60k miles that burned oil at the rate of 1qt per 300 miles. I think a Mercury 2-stroke outboard burns less oil! Very interested in M.Y. of this engine as the oil rings still look acceptable. PS2: Go 2ZZ-GE. K is more powerful, but much more difficult and returns on labor is not enough. PS3: You have rods loose. Engine out. Pull crank shaft and have easy access to push pistons out w/o having to worry about any bore damage (lol it cast iron sleeve on 1zz)....but if this far in, should be checking main bearings....especially since oil starvation is suspect. Whoa... were you on crack when you wrote this? Chill. I have no clue how many miles were on this motor. I pressure washed the motor b4 I pulled it out of the car. The block is not painted. Idk if the motor was serviced b4 this video. It had a Dorman oil pan on it. They are only $60 and are almost identical to the OEM oil pan. Pls stop with the "OEM is best" stuff because I use a ton of aftermarket parts without issue. It was a head gasket failure. I'm not sure what you are seeing, but there was minimal rod and main bearing wear. Yes, I showed everything in the video (use the chapters to skip around if you missed something). I opted to rebuild a 1ZZ to learn the motor. Note, I also have a 2ZZ, K20, and K20/24 build in process. FYI - the 2ZZ is very similar to the 1ZZ, but the 2ZZ is prone to oil pressure issues and cam wiping. It is not what I consider a reliable motor and its output leaves a lot to be desired. I rebuilt a 2ZZ and am in the process of rebuilding a C60 transmission... both will be swapped into one of my MRS'. Just like the 1ZZ, I built the 2ZZ to learn about the motor and swap. FYI - you can't tell if oil rings are acceptable by visual inspection. Lastly, I checked the main bearings and there was minimal to no wear on the mains. Again, I don't know what you are seeing, but there was no evidence of oil starvation. Thx for watching and commenting. Pls subscribe. -AJ

This tool tells how good or bad the valve is sealing against the valve seat. Another test is to pull vacuum on the port, remove the vacuum, and time how long the suction plate takes to fall off. I use this to check if lapping the valve improved the seal between the valve and seat.
