These flights also raise a lot of money for Mawson's Huts, which were erected in 1911 by an Australian exploration team. They are very historic and are very famous amongst Australians. During these flights, the people working at one of the Australian research bases down there often come out and wave at the plane.

I took a QANTAS scenic flight of Antactica on the 18th of February 1979 on Boeing 747; it was spectacular. I had recently turned twenty-five, and it was my first flight.🛫That was forty-five years ago - how time gets away. I'm an old man of seventy-years now.🤔 ...... and it cost me $200!😂
@gecko-sb1kp6 ай бұрын
Spring chicken you are. I'm finally going on 9 February 2025. I had the opportunity to do it on a 747 back in January 1997. The flight was actually on my birthday, Jan 20. And I passed it up. I've regretted that. I decided to do it a few years ago but couldn't because I wasn't vaccinated. But I'm booked on now. And mine is a Sunday flight as well. Flying with me will be unopened letters and first day covers cancelled at Australian Antarctic Territory research stations from the 50's and 60's and sent to Australia. I'll be flying them over Antarctica again for the first time in 70 years...

What a great flight and experience. I think this is my second time watching flight to Antarctica, this time just flying above it without landing. The duration of flight feels like International flight to be honest. The view is definitely breathtaking.

Sometimes inter continental flights in the southern hemisphere make use of jet streams over the Antarctic for improved economy by flying south and one gets to see the ice if the flight is during southern hemisphere summer, quite a treat. Thanks for sharing, glad you got to enjoy that special trip.

Hi, Kuga. I have been enjoying your videos for years but this is my first comment of any length. I love catching a glimpse of whatever stylish wristwatch you are wearing. I for one would enjoy it if you gave us a little “wristwatch check” in your voyages to show us what you are wearing. Seems like it wouldn’t be out of place if it was a time stamp for departure or arrival time, etc. Happy travels. -Bo

Konnichiha dear Kuga! I regret I have not kept up with your travels, I have suffered many unfortunate life experiences. Anyway, I enjoyed your Antarctic flight. I have wanted to do this for many years, but now, I'd have to go first class, because of my health, my legs must be raised all the time now, so economy would cause me terrible problems. Anyway, congratulations on achieving your goal, and thank you very much for showing Antarctica! Cheers, Arigatou gozaimushita justin❤

The base you flew over (at 19:58) is Casey Station. It is the Antarctica base of Australia. You can see it in google maps. I spent some time there a few years back, incredible place and the Aussies were wonderful. (I'm USA) Given that it's an Australian airline, I'm pretty shocked they didn't announce what you were seeing...
@gecko-sb1kp6 ай бұрын
The footage seems to have been edited in a random way and most likely the audio as well. It may have been mentioned on the first pass from the starboard side and lost in editing. The author had certainly not researched what he may get to see prior. Not an easy thing to do I know, given that there are 20 possible flight paths dependent on weather. But by my upcoming flight in February I know I will know every feature down there like I know the craters on the moon. And I'll have with me detailed maps and photos. It may be my one and only time flying over the ice and I'm going to milk every minute dry. Not just for myself but for my new friends I'll be seated near whom I'm yet to meet...

Thanks for the video, usually after watching a Kuga video I’m like… “I want to do that!” This experience? Mehhh.. not so much. Ice view only half the trip, wing view, no penguins, 🐧. If I’m going to Antarctica, I want to be ON Antarctica! One night Glamping with penguins count me in!
@TheGreatLordDufus8 ай бұрын
haha yeah, I get that, I want to go back to the continent while I'm still physically able - it is so expensive though, and the landings are kept short on tourist ships. The flight would still be cool though, a different perspective.
@JustinWatson238 ай бұрын
yeah given the good seats with decent views on these flights are almost as much as gthe cheapest 10 day tours of Antarctica, i went and did the whole ship cruise down there to see the Penguins. Certainly and experience worth having, but these flights are different, mostly as you see the expanse of the continent from the air. i just don't think they are worth it.

Glad you didn't drop any hallucinogens before this one! In your lifetime a lot of what you saw will disappear because of the very tech that enabled you to see this, and, as you say, for us to share with you; so, the irony is thick. But it is an unbelievable human achievement--- that this trip is a real thing these days. Enjoy it while you can, I guess, but.... glad to see the blueberry muffin, and the Club 7 shirt again. Always glad to see anything you do! Arigato beaucoup💙

If we take a similar flight-path next season, I'm hoping we go a touch beyond 80 degrees south. I want to see the beginning of the Transantarctic Mountains and the Drygolski Ice Tongue. Mt Erebus would be good. And the Ross Ice Shelf. I'm sure it will be an eyeful and a dream come true...
