Great video coverage on the honda 3813’s. I bought a 4514 in 1983 and still using it anytime the grass needs cutting. Also, I picked up a parts mower 15 years ago and now salvage anything needed from it like the deck, wheels, steering arm etc......it has a blown head casket & was still running at the time of purchase but blowing smoke like a skeeder sprayer.

@DocSprocket15 күн бұрын
@jfkanye5001 None, whatsoever. I never did it. I'm sorry. Been years since I filmed this and I've forgotten what I said- but I suspect that I meant that you probably could adapt a JD deck but it's definitely not going to be a bolt-on affair. For as incredibly well-built as these machines are, it seems like the decks were bad for rotting out.

I've owned one for 6 years and have had very few problems with it. They are exceptional machines as you've pointed out considering their age. I doubt there are many original (unrebuilt) examples of other brands from that era. BTW, I need to order a PTO belt and the only belts they show are 63-66 inches long. When looking at the installed original belt It looks a lot longer than that. Do you know what the legnth of the PTO belt it takes is?

I had a Honda 3813 out of all of the tractors I've ever had it's the one I wish I could get back, despite its issues it was a fun tractor to drive. I could be wrong but I believe they had two hard fuel lines from factory, one main line the other I believe was an overflow. Personally when I had mine I was considering putting a Yanmar Diesel in a 2-3 cylinder that would be an interesting conversion.
@DocSprocket8 жыл бұрын
Yes, the carb overflow (vent) goes to what I think might be a charcoal canister or similar evap devide, and then a (possibly vapor) return line from there. The Yanmar? Cool idea!

This thing is garaged kept with an original grass catcher. Very nice condition. Almost mint. What do you think its worth? I live in hernando County Florida if anyone is interested
@DocSprocket Жыл бұрын
That's SO hard to say. Values are regional- and I don't even mean by country or even state. Hell, something can be worth double, the next county over. Based on your description though- I'd put starting value at least as high as the cheapest new rider a place like Home Depot currently has to offer- and I'd even consider that to be a lowball. These machines hold a great resale value, and although not everyone knows what they are worth, there ARE people that do- and are willing to pay it.

@DocSprocket3 жыл бұрын
If there's been gas in the carbs, you can pretty much count on them being gummed up hard. Now the fuel pumps are an electric diaphragm type, and I wouldn't be too shocked if the ethanol screwed them up too. All of this of course is in addition to the usual checking of the oil, coolant, etc.
@rogertalley7944 Жыл бұрын
Actually you don't have to take all that out. Take the battery tray and relay mounting bracket out, take the bolts out of the plastic timing cover, take the motor mount bolts out on the left side as sitting on the machine. Front mount and rear. Take the back fenders off and seat,and you can get the shaft out by prying the engine up..

Hi there! I found one up for sale but, it doesn’t go into gear. Is that a major issue? Thank you in advance for your advice
@DocSprocket2 жыл бұрын
It could actually be pretty simple. There's a damper on the clutch mechanism, and sometimes they stick. I started a machine after it was parked up for a couple years, and the damper was stuck- so, it wouldn't grab a gear. If you check my other 3813 videos, I believe I show off the damper somewhere and explain how it works. I'm pretty sure one video shows how to delete it for proper and instant clutch engagement. I'm sure other things are possible, but that's the first place I'd look.

you should cut the shaft, extend alittle, then offfset each and use sprockets to gear it up mr sprocket.
@DocSprocket7 жыл бұрын
I thought of it. Two issues- 1)insufficient space to offset shafts enough. At minimum would need abou 4". 2)Those couplers that llok like u-joints are not actually u-joints, and likely would not tolerate very much misalignment. Solvable problems, but not quick and easy.
@RockeyDAproductions7 жыл бұрын
what about having a second short shaft mounted next to cut big one with a total of 4 sprockets? that would probably be harder to mount but would keep everything lined up.

@moonman61548 жыл бұрын
are they set up to idle that fast?
@darkside09148 жыл бұрын
only one way that I know of to speed up a shaft driven rider, without cracking open the diff, i've seen it done on an old cub cadet, I think it was a CC, and that's to put in a chain drive, basically cut the shaft, have the engine side going to an input sprocket, run a chain to an output sprocket and the other half of the shaft connects to it, but you must be careful to be sure you shaft stays balanced and your connection points are welded straight.
@DocSprocket8 жыл бұрын
I chewed on that for awhile. One of the issues is that you'd have to offset the driveshaft down or to the side, to make room for the sprockets.
@darkside09148 жыл бұрын
which would require a u joint or other flexible but strong coupler, I suppose you could also do it with a belt and pullys, but again you'd have to offset one or both sides of the drive shaft, it's been awhile, but I believe on the cub the builder used an automotive style cv off an atv or utv ,and left the shaft to the diff straight, but i'm not totally certain, it's been a few yrs since I saw it.

Parts for these can be somewhat spendy and hard to find. Worth it for an amazing mower, though. If you're chuffing black smoke, the first place I'd look is the carburetor. It sounds like you're very rich. It's quite possible that the float has sunk or is sticking, or the needle and seat are dirty or damaged.
