Some humble suggestions for better surface finish: The tool length has to be as short as possible. Finish pass should not remove more than 0.2mm of material. Lower the RPM . (21000 rpm is way too high , i guess under 10000rpm would be good)
@gaiustacitus42422 жыл бұрын
I watched this video again and thought I'd share my first experience with friction welding a 1.000 inch diameter end mill with 6061 aluminum. The end mill was turning at 3,000 RPM, and instead of feeding down into the part 0.100" the spindle attempted to plunge the end mill all the way through a 1.5" thick bar. A blog of molten aluminum was thrown out and it landed on my throat. Just one of the adventures in machining. Good luck in the many adventures ahead of you, and stay safe. p.s. - I tried to salvage the end mill. While I was able to extract the end mill from the aluminum bar, I could not remove the aluminum from the surface of the tool steel.
@DodgyBrothersEngineering Жыл бұрын
In my early attempts to machine aluminum I tried it without any cooling, and once that cutter is clogged it is virtually impossible to get off and still be able to use the cutter. I rarely clog one these days. Fortunately my cutters cost me like $1 each, so it is no big loss, just frustrating.
@toddmolloy311 Жыл бұрын
Gotta get it while it's still hot or send it through an acid bath to strip 6061 off the carbide tool.
@bjondersson Жыл бұрын
To remove the aluminum from the endmill put it in sodium hydroxide, a.k.a. caustic soda, lye, drain cleaner. If there’s just a bit of aluminum 15 minutes may be enough. I had to soak my fully clogged endmill over night.

You've probably learned by now that down-cut bits are only to be used for finish cuts. Most of the videos produced by hobbyists show using a single bit for the entire milling operation, but its best to use an up-cut bit for roughing and leave 0.005" to 0.010" for cleanup using the down-cut bit.
@DodgyBrothersEngineering Жыл бұрын
Or use a down cut bit and reverse the direction of travel. Make your final cuts in the opposite direction.
@gaiustacitus4242 Жыл бұрын
@@DodgyBrothersEngineering I should have qualified my statement that it applies when machining metal. Conventional milling of metal produces inferior surface finishes, as does roughing and finishing using the same cutting tool. Conventional milling sometimes causes tear out when milling wood (mainly when the cutting tool becomes dull). Down cut bits don't generally work well for machining metal as the chips tend to pack up and cause the cutting tools to break. This is an opinion based on running a machine shop with more than 360,000 spindle hours per year for more than a decade. Tool life was an important factor in the cost of operations and quality of finished goods.
@DodgyBrothersEngineering Жыл бұрын
@@gaiustacitus4242 typically none of my bits live long enough to wear out, but I am currently shooting a video where I am chewing through cheap Chinese cutters like butter. Changing direction of rotation did get me some more tool life, but they simply do not like cutting steel plate. Especially after I work hardened it without thinking. FYI I am the novice that you speak of that uses the same cutter for everything, but I far from claim to be an expert, because I am far from being one. So I appreciate the advice you gave. I need to see if I can find a source of cheap up cut bits.
