@JamesDeanDesigns I visited this video, as I was attempting to do the same thing with my setup. My VFD is the H100 VHD, like what is listed in the 1.5 and 2.2K kits in your description. I have the 110v design, as I didn't want to put a 220v circuit inside my garage. At any rate, I have the ability on mine to amplify the PMW signal going into my Analog Input 1, and if I adjust it, I can get all the way up to full power. It does skew the lower ranges though a bit. For example, at what should be 5000rpm, actually runs at 6100. But as I go up, it levels out quite a bit. I will be putting a video out next week with all of my settings. Full credit to you for showing me the way forward. I will be sure to mention you in the video, as well as link back to this one for those folks that might have the VFD that you have. Thanks for providing such wonderful CNC tutorials!👍👍👍👍

I wouldn't worry about the frequency-driven module, PWM is generally a fixed frequency 20kHz for example it is only the duty cycle of the pulse that changes. The trimmer on the PWM module is supposed the tune the max analog output voltage from memory, I use the exact same module on my CNC router with a BLDC motor and driver. It may be the input voltage is too low to tune up to the 10 volts needed. On my setup that PWM module is at 24v and works perfectly. So I'd definitely try to increase the supply voltage to the PWM module.
@JamesDeanDesigns Жыл бұрын
Thats what I was thinking. The input takes 12-30v and I think the 12v input I'm using is just about 12v.

If you up the hz of the motor.(500 instead of 400) it will do 25% more power (just make sure you dont overpower the spindle.) Test theze settings without the spindle connected. And see how many hz the vfd puts out when you go full throttle. Then you know for sure that you wont blow the spindle.

Your explanations are thorough, the most appropriate to my skill level that I've found on KZbin. Now that I've found someone who explains well, I hope to find the topics I need! Within the VFD enclosure I need additional power (24V) to run relays to run an enclosure fan, turn on the water cooler, and power the VFD, itself (so I don't have to keep using the power plug!). I also want to enable an emergency stop switch. I see in the comments that you added 24V power. Do you have video(s) on these, or another reference?

I now had the chance to do the same on my Vevor 1,5kw watercooled spindle - used the same converter you show. I was able to increase output up to 9,2 Volts what gives 23000 RPM - this is fine for me. The screw needed to be turned multiple times the whole circle, not only a few mm up or down what one might guess to show any effect on Voltage, but at 9,2 Volts converter was maxed out. For someone interested - I am using Sainsmart 4040Pro and connector named "Laser" can be used for this. I noted RPM is higher in lower regions as command sent - i.e. S12000 results in 13000RPM shown on VFD. This effect is smoothing out with higher RPM

So I finally got to the bottom of it, just haven't had chance to do an update. The 12v live from the laser port isn't strong enough. I used a separate 24v supply and that got the full power

Great video and learned a lot. So I’ve set up exactly as shown but although I can operate the spindle manually from the vfd , I can’t seem to get it to fire up via the grbl. I’ve programmed the vfd etc, but I’m not getting any voltage via the PWM . Is there something missing? It’s a Vasto XL controller and a H100 1.5kw vfd & spindle, but I’m wondering if the controller is malfunctioning ?

Hello, I have the same frequency converter. My question is the following, how can it be connected to the Mach 3 board and in what order would the wiring be done? Thanks!
@franksegers19715 ай бұрын
I suggest you use the 0-20mA input and put a resistor between the board and the input so the 8.8V / R = 20mA, so around 440 Ohm. That could even be done without the intermediate board, but than with a different resistor of course. 3.4V / 0.02 = 170 Ohm
@JamesDeanDesigns5 ай бұрын
You clearly know a lot more than me about electronics...which doesn't take much to be honest. I did eventually get to the bottom of this and it was the fact the 12v supply that on paper should have been fine, wasn't actually enough to run the converter
@zaviardavis78514 ай бұрын
@JamesDeanDesigns So did the replacement PWM converter worked and gave you the results you were looking for?
@slapcitykustomz1658 Жыл бұрын
You could use a boost buck converter/step up voltage regulator they have a potentiometer on them that you can turn voltage up or down, set your laser output to the max then put the multimeter on the buck converter output and turn up until you see 10v then your good to go hope this helps
@JamesDeanDesigns Жыл бұрын
That's essentially what I use in the video and it didn't work. Albeit I finally got to the bottom. Even though the 12v live from the laser is supposed to be enough to work on those conveters, it didn't. I even tried a direct 2amp 12v supply and still didn't work. However went up to a 24v supply and TADA! It all worked. Bit of a pain to be honest but glad I figured it out

Maybe using a simple voltage divider would help? Use the converter that gives 8.8 volts, hook up on the output two resistors in series and take the signal from the bottom resistor to the input which accepts 5 volts. Value of the bottom resistor should be proportional to the sum of both resistors in the same way as 5 volts to 8.8 volts.

question: was pn07 " start again by external signal with range -1-2 " reason for tripping VFD with error OC-r ? I have same 7.5kw using on 3.2kw motor for car lift and it works but sometimes it tripps out with OC-r error. Did you had same issue ?
7 ай бұрын
Couldn't you wire the 5V out on the VFD through a simple relay that is controlled by the 3.3V output from your controller? That would give you 100% power on activation.
@neilcullimore57985 ай бұрын
Wonder whether it is worth rectifying the PWM signal, then smoothing with a capacitor on the '5V in' line.......that might work. It would be useful to know (so as to work out what type of diode configuration to implement) whether the PWM signal oscillates above and below earth/ground or whether the waveform sits higher than earth/ground.
@JamesDeanDesigns5 ай бұрын
That would mean me actually understanding how this all works. I did eventually get to the bottom of this, turns out the voltage converter that's meant to run from 12v, was working well with the 12v live from the laser port. Once I connected a separate 24v supply to the converter, all worked as expected
@Martin-uj6zn3 ай бұрын
@@JamesDeanDesigns So let me see if im understanding correctly. The 12 v from the laser port was not enough power and you had to add an external 24v power source to run to the vfd?
@JamesDeanDesigns3 ай бұрын
@Martin-uj6zn yes. Some other with different machines found their PWM 12v supply enough so could been an issue with my controller

I reset it and now it goes to 400 hertz but the potentiometer on the front does not work. Is there a setting I can change to fix it. TIA

is their a way just to have the unit just turn on and off and the speed function left manual just using the spindle power supply cables if that makes sense
@Cnddecor Жыл бұрын
If you look at the booklet, you can change the rpm by doing this. you can set hz on the VFD to control spindle speed. RPM=HZ*60, if you set hz 200, RPM=200*60=12000, if you set hz 400, RPM=400*60=24000. Cheers

maybe have simple use same elektric chematic than arduino can use, PWM to in TIP120 transistor, then transistor external power 10V and TIP120 adjust output 0-10V if want can add PWM input optocoupler too then external power 10V and then transistor output to 0-10V.

some VFD controllers have what is essentially a voltage multiplication factor which you can set, but not all do and I don't know if this one does.

You need more input into the PWM converter - 12v is not enough for 10v output.
@JamesDeanDesigns7 ай бұрын
You are correct. I figured it out but just haven't done another video. Supposedly these devices are meant to work off 12v, and others have actually messaged me saying theirs worked fine but for some reason mine only worked 100% when I connected a 24v supply to it
@timmyB147 Жыл бұрын
It is possible your PWM signal is not going to 100% and limiting the maximum voltage. Do you have a multimeter that can measure duty cycle and frequency or an oscilloscope to take a look at the signal?
@JamesDeanDesigns Жыл бұрын
So it's pretty common for a pwm signal to only run a max of 3.3v (which I didn't know until I started this) but other than a basic multimeter, I dont have anything else to measure with 😕
@timmyB147 Жыл бұрын
@@JamesDeanDesigns Correct, depending on the logic level of the controller. It could be 3.3V logic on the controller and going to 100% or near to that. I was thinking the PWM signal might not be going to full range since both connections you tried (VFD and converter) did not make the expected full scale. There are logic level shifters that might help when hooked directly to the VFD. The other suggestion made about setting a voltage divider on the 8.8V output signal might work.
