While most of my math was engineering math was high school Algebra, Geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and then college focused on differential equations, partial differential equations, matrix algebra and statistics. I find these a great memory jogger as at 75, don’t use them like I used to..

I love your videos and I think you do an amazing job at teaching. I was taught PEMDAS when I was younger, but last year I found a channel that taught GEMA, and I think it's just such a better acronym to teach the order of operations. GEMA stands for Groupings, Exponents, Multiplication, and Addition. Obviously, we have to remember the inverse operations as well. It's not a huge change, but Groupings makes more sense than parenthesis. Also, I find that so many people think with PEMDAS that Multiplication comes before Division, and Addition comes before Subtraction when thinking about PEMDAS. I find PEMDAS confuses so many people for some reason, where I believe GEMA would solve this issue.

I got 0 but wasn't really sure about the vertical bars. I assumed they were another kind of parenthesis. I worked from the inside out from the inner-most parenthesis. Apparently, I got it right but I need to write down the problems more often.

With or without the proms "I" the result is the same. Not really necessary to bring in the "absolut operator I" in this example as the "- 4 + I- 3" equals "- 4 + - 3" in that you add a negative number. Cosmetically it looks better with a prom, though.

The absolute value symbol applies to the value or expression it encloses. It is a grouping symbol just like parentheses are a grouping symbol. If you want to fit it into the acronym then use the acronym GEMDAS instead of PEMDAS. GEMDAS is identical to PEMDAS except the G means Groupings, which makes it clear that you need to think about other grouping symbols too in the first step, not just parentheses.

Did not watch yet, screwed up on another vid, about square root solutions, but undeterred, I’d say the absolute value bars override +, -, *, /, because one needs to know the sign in the end. So my thinking= is -3+7 =4. -4 + 4 =0. Now we can ignore whatever is in front, -2 or some super complex term. So the answer should be 0. Now I’ll watch the vid and see if I pass or fail 😜

I weep for your students. This is an example of why 50% of incoming college and university students test into remedial Math. The more valuable lesson would have been to factor out negative 1. At which point you can eliminate the absolute value bars; -1(2(4+3-7)), then either simplify the inner parentheses or distribute the 2 first then simplify. In a previous video, this guy claimed that (12÷2×3)÷2=9. Which is incorrect. The correct reduced value is 1. You must apply 2×3 as factors in the denominator. This can be checked by the inverse identity; 2(3×2÷12)=1.
