There’s nothing like a day at work, and to come back and watch this awesome reaction video! It’s such a pleasure to able to share this with each and everyone of you. When I walk through the building, and watch the visitors in amazement, is such a fascinating experience. And I love to talk to them when they are admiring the works of art, or the historical pieces. Watching this documentary together does stir up a similar feeling. It would be my greatest pleasure to give a tour through this Dutch temple of art & history. Can’t wait for part 3!

I love going to the Van Gogh museum and just sit at the bench and stare at his paintings for at least 10 minutes. The tourists, mostly Japanese, walk by and take their pictures. But sometimes a few ask if they can sit next to me. And I tell them to take their time and really look at the picture. They always thank me for slowing them down and apreciate the work. Every brushstroke is special and has a purpose. Van Gogh's paintings are 3 dimensional even without camera's and computers. And the Nightwatch by Rembrandt is our national treasure. In WWII the painting was moved all around the country and eventually hidden in mines in the south of the Netherlands. Anything to keep it out of the hands of the NAZI's.

Then i have a good one for you.. in the Rijksmuseum there is a selfportrait from Van Gogh but i saw something to it. And one of the persons who works there, haven't seen that before! It is a oval red round under his face what Vincent van Gogh did!

At the Van Gogh there's a room dedicated to his self portraits. It is one of my favourite places in Amsterdam, I can spend hours looking at those paintings. Number one recommendation for anyone visiting

Just read a little about it: the x-ray is used with different wavelengths, to show how much calcium (whites), iron (rust-reds), potassium (yellow?) and cobalt (blue) is in the picture. Some parts of it are painted over, so you can see the change from one place to the other. There is also the 3d scan of the surface, which shows very finely how the surface is build up. Its a different technique as the x-ray, but is also shows a lot about the painting. The Dutch are one of the first modern nation states with 'republic' as state form (revolt against Spanish in 1566 republic in 1588). Why we are a monarchy now is a long story. The cities needed protection. One of the ways they got that was in the form of 'gildes', 'guilds'. Which can mean a profession (like smithing guild), but also be a defense militia, centered around each church. they had the latest weapons, halberds, muskets, crossbows, and regular military things like flag bearers and drummers and horses. They would protect the city 24/7. The 'nachtwacht' (night watch) is about such a guild. It shows the Dutch coming together to help and stand by these brave people. Its at the core of our culture: the freedom we fought, with success. We still have ceremonial guilds at this moment in time: www.weertdegekste.nl/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/schuttersfeest_Laar_1280.jpg they all dress up in velvet garmets from the middle ages, they have the drums, the flag bearers have a special 'prayer' that is full of symbolism that they all can perform in tandem. Each year they hold a shooting competition, the one firing the shot that takes a wooden bird of a pole totally is the new 'king', has to pay for a new silver shield to add to that guilds collection, and has to pay for a round of booze to the entire guild. Some guilds have silver shields going back to 1688.

With the x-ray you can see every layers of the painting, so everything what was painted before or sketched on the canvas you can see and with the raised surfaces are "normal" high resolution 3D photos! The Night Watch (De Nachtwacht) was originally a bit bigger, when the painting was moved from De Doelen to the City Hall on Dam Square in 1715, it was reduced in size on three sides, because it couldn't fit the wall! 😱 By the way, the estimated value of The Night Watch is 500 million Euros! 🤯✌🏼

First time I was visiting the Rijksmuseum, I walked up the stairs turned left and I could see the Nachtwacht, at the end of that famous gallery. My eyes were fixed on the Nachtwacht, as I walked up to the painting, the people on the painting got bigger and bigger as if they were moving slightly. As Rembrandt intended it to be, a painting with movement, instead of fixed group of people. That idea was revolutionary at the time. And the painting got moved several times, through the ages. Typical dutch to let our national treasure being transported like this on our bikeway. Epic!!!

Now the Nachtwacht (Nightwatch) is bigger, because they added what have been cut many many years ago from it! September 8th i was at the Rijksmuseum

Some paintings are sold over € 100.000.000 to over € 400.000.000 last number is exceptional but that's why some museums can make an extreme lot of money by displaying one or more paintings that belong to the best paintings ever. So over a period of time museums can make more money because of many visitors that will come, so sometimes rich people buy a painting as an investment because they know, later a museum will pay more and that's just waiting ten or twenty years and sell it again years later. If the Dutch sell the night watch (de Nachtwacht) it will probably be more than three double the highest sold painting ever maybe more but I, of course, do not know but the Dutch will never sell this painting ever and will be displayed over thousand years in the same building because the Dutch will renovate de Rijksmuseum forever. But de Nachtwacht is priceless...But one thing, incredible to see the new Rijksmuseum for the first time during a reaction. THX as a Dutch I love this.

Painters paint over images they don't like in retrospect. So on the x-ray you see the servant in several different places on the painting and each time he painted over it.

The Nachtwacht has actually been in Belgium for very short, after WWII it had be brought back from the tunnel in Limburg where it was hidden and because of war damaged roads, it was driven a few kilometers over Belgian soil. A completely different style of documentary about a completely different style of Dutch art, it's a bit subversive, ironic and very different but I like it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/inbEaYp7d9xmi80

Different layers of paint, reacting to different lighting from the x-ray machine. It is also used to discover if there was a painting beneath the surface painting. (A common practice, specially used by smuglers/art thieves.)
