Ester Ledecka skied 26th which meant the course was already broken up by the previous 25 skiers and far more difficult to ski. No one, and I mean no one, has any chance of winning that far down the draw...and on borrowed skis..... no chance ! She had previously never been anywhere near a podium during the skiing world cup season. And yet...!!! Her "mistakes" were her response to skiing at the limits of human ability under those circumstances. During those 1minute 21.11 seconds she was well and truly "in the zone".. a special place that transcends conscious thought and lets the body do what it must do to win. Her winner's mind was already there, as the top snowboarder, and it was harnessed for this incredible athletic feat under the most difficult circumstances.... so I can understand her thought of "what have I done???"

@@zonedutopia She had a couple of big skids and that's going to bleed speed and also lengthen the course for her by a hair. As far as the original post goes, race temperature was 16 degrees F so I'm sure it held up fine. And the reason she won (this is from Bode Miller, not me) is she took a more aggressive line to begin and shortened the course (even with the mistakes) on everyone. She's proven since then that she's a legit downhiller and this is her pace. And even before this she never considered herself just a snowboarder that ski's. She considered herself a dual sport athlete.
@CindyR0selol10 ай бұрын
This came as a complete surprise to everyone in the sport; and obviously no one was more surprised than Ms. Ledecka herself. And she then went on to win gold in snowboarding, as expected -- making her the first Olympian to win gold in two different sports at the same Games

I watched this broadcast live on CBC when it happened. They said something to the effect of "The Americans (NBC) have cut their broadcast to somethings else by this point, they aren't even showing this." The skiers skied in order of their world ranking, so I guess they figured no one was catching up to the top competitors and started covering another sport (at least on the main channel). Just to give you an idea of the magnitude of this upset. And then Ledecka would win gold in her snowboarding event (parallel giant slalom) a few days later!
@bjako4 жыл бұрын
That is correct: NBC cut to another sport. To their credit, they did go back and show this run just after the fact. In a way it was perhaps more dramatic as they had to explain why they were going back to skiing and that this was really a great snowboarder that just shocked the skiing world. Either way it was way cool.

That's a myth guys. She had second hand skis that were returned to the manufacturer presumably by Shiffrin - which is pretty normal practice that the lesser known skiers pick among those returned skis - but Ester made the skis her own for some time and fine tuned them. It was not a last minute ski exchange:-) What is true though is that Ester's boot was broken for the race but they decided to risk it because she was used to it. The thing that was funny about this was that it wasn't even a fluke. It wasn't like she beat them because they all did poorly, she was apparently so inexperienced that she attempted turns no veteran would even try due to the likelihood of failure and nailed them, earning a lot of time. Ironically, Ledecka is now ranked higher in skiing than she is in snowboarding, despite having been a better snowboarder for most of her career (including here).

@@yahopostinguy429 Being overly aggressive is a sign of inexperience in certain fields, this being one of them. No one else attempted the line she took because there was a high likelihood of them wiping out. She simply didn't and therefore won. It's a fun story either way.

I think people call that a fluke haha
@mitsanut58693 жыл бұрын
@@yahopostinguy429 excellent analysis. She is also more raw than others, I would add. With more strength, the natural confidence level is higher - she could balance her mistakes with raw body strength due to her hard training routines. Majority fans think it's all in legs (just like in hockey, for example). The overall body strength is the deciding factor in athletic disciplines. Every muscle must be trained and exercised because in the end, they all work like one perfect machine. And there are many, even great - athletes who do not like the weight room. Ledecka is supremely conditioned in comparison to other competitors because she puts time and effort into the entire body conditioning. There are some exceptions to the rule in history of athletic sports but if you want to really be the best, talent is only a fraction of the success. Hard work is the key
