You asked why it cost so much. The Grandmaster Chime spent the last 8 years in development, and houses 20 complications in 1,366 parts. Two of the complications are actually the first of their kind. The 47mm case alone took 4 years to develop and has an additional 214 components, which is more than what most movements have. Apart from being technically masterful, the case is a hand-engraved triumph.

Literally visited that exact patek phillipe store/museum in Geneva this summer and after learning about watches and how they work its insane. The price in the pateks are for two main reasons . The first being the historical significance of the brand and company. The second is in the engineering and math. The math to create these devices which LITERALLY can go hundreds of years(for pateks) without needing to readjust in addition to the amount of different aspects these fucking watches track PERFECTLY PRECICELY is insane. That watch literally has a chime built in that makes a vibration that you both feel and hear on the hour. On top of that it tracks like 6 different time zones, the celestial patterns, and more ALL WITHOUT ANY SORT OF ERROR FOR DECADES. The craftsmanship and engineering which makes the math so exact is insane. Also i believe this specific watch has 21 individual complications if i remember properly and every dingle complication is tens of thousands of dollars. A rolex gmt master 2 has 2 complications. It tracks time and day of the month, has a complication to also track the GMT time and another complication that makes it self wind itself from just having it on your wrist. Thats a 12k watch. A rolex daytona has 3 more complications than that and that makes it a 35k watch. There is only so much fuckin room for engineering in these things and to fit more and more complications makes it exponentially more expensive and difficult to make while maintaining its accuracy over tens to hundreds of years without adjustments from actual watch makers. 100% worth the money to someone who can afford it. These watches retain and increase in value better than fucking houses. No joke

Not only the craftsmanship, but also the incredibly extended knowledge that goes into designing and manufacturing an object like this. After which you also have to factor in the workspace and all the tools required for building something like that. Here's an example. One of the machines that build LEGO bricks can easily cost 100K USD (excluding running costs). That price is offset because the machine will then produce billions of similar pieces. Now compare that to the tools and machines required to construct a watch like this, where most parts are bespoke or highly limited in production. That's not something you can compare to average market prices, and is the reason why limited productions and bespoke items have an exponentially increased value compared to mass production markets. Even a Rolls Royce has many parts that can be sourced or built in high quantities through partnerships with other companies (like BMW), which greatly reduces the production cost per piece. Of course a price on a watch like this Patek Philippe is to some extend inflated because it's so unique and exclusive, and they know that there is nothing else quite like it, and people who can afford it can afford the extra inflation in price. If you tried to be too competitive with such a time and resource demanding product,, then the final sales revenue would not make it worth the time, and you might as well go for something less exclusive that can be sold in higher quantity for the same effort and still make the same money.
@Increased96 жыл бұрын
With the materials needed to make it, the machine costs, and the work time, 2.6 seems fairly decent. The precision needed to make something with this many moving parts is incredibly hard. Most of these parts probably have tolerances in the range of hundreds of micrometers.
@Real_MisterSir6 жыл бұрын
^ finally someone with common sense. Also remember to take into account the experience and education that a watchmaker of this quality has to undergo before undertaking a project like this watch. People who say it is way too expensive, could just as well be saying that a spinal surgery should be relatively cheap because the materials and equipment used is similar to many other surgery types - but they forget that you'd likely need 15+ years of education, and then another 10 years of experience before you could successfully undertake a spinal surgery. Education and experience of this high quality is not cheap, nor is it common. It gets exponentially more expensive for each years worth of experience and know-how that has to go into the operation of creating something like this watch. Maybe 1000 people in the world have the skills to do it, and most of them don't have the time to invest into such a project, so it is really clear that such a price might be a tiny bit inflated, but is well worth it regardless. If it was a government-owned object it would just be deemed invaluable because you'd never find it anywhere else ever again.

I think a lot of people don't realize how expensive it is to make things. Like... "I wouldn't pay 5 dollars for that" but just the sheer amount of time and effort alone is priceless. A cheap plastic thing in the dollar store cost way more than a dollar to make but not one of us is going to sit there and try to make that cheap plastic thing. More people need to be taught that things don't appear out of thin air. I recently tried to make a ring in my jewelry class and considered getting silver or gold. My piece was 12 to 13 ounces in wax already with it being hollowed out. Well gold was out of the question because right now gold is $1,325.65 per ounce. Silver was 15 dollars per ounce but that was still a bit too much because of how big the ring would be. Then time constraints and just my overall shitty craftmanship I settled with bronze from my teacher for free that was blended with other less valuable metals. I learned a lot. But even now I catch myself saying I wouldn't pay for something... but it's not that I won't. I'm just too broke to afford it. Now every time I see someone complain about the price I'm like "The cost of the paper and pencils to sit and design that probably costs more than what you're willing to pay."

The high price tag on the watch should be related to how intricate and complicated the internal structures of the watch is. What i don't understand is why this complication itself is necessary for the watch, when the exterior is the only thing u can see. There's no way an owner/buyer would open up/scrap the watch to "appreciate" the internal mechanism/structure. I can't find a good enough analogy, so this might not be a correct/representative of how i see it, but its like you buying a fried chicken 100 times the usual price, just because the chicken is matured, brought up, or whatever the fk in a high-tech secret technology developed by illuminati in Mars, and it tastes literally the same.
