Congratulations Mike for completing this job without the use of one four letter word, beats me how you can do it. My wife used to come to the garage and say : I think that you should turn the radio on Rob-------LOUD !!!!. Thanks for a perfect lesson recall. All the best, Yorkshire Rob.

If only.. Mike, I did my time on 2As and other things back in the early 70s in the Australian Army. Apart from one bloke, the instructors were all wooden and boring. Fair enough i guess, we were winding down from the stupidity in Vietnam, but someone like you teaching would have made a far better mechanic out of me than the Army eventually got. Of all the channels i subscribe to, it is this one I click on first, every time. You have a pic of my 109 on your wall. It needs a GB overhaul. Watching this makes me want to do it.

Thank you! Although I am on my own I try to present like one of you guys are here and not just explain how to do a repair, but the reasons why you have to do things in a correct order and how things work - in that way I think people can get a bit of confidence and encouragement to have a go and work up to more complex jobs My Apprenticeship was crap - I though my 6 months in the training centrer was a taster to the rest of my 4 years on site - what a disappointment - no one taught me anything, so I found out myself on my own jobs 3.5 years waste just for a bit of paper and a few bucks! Oh well!

I always cut gasket packs on the back, but I always cut them across, maybe an inch from the top ( or bottom ), so I can ease out the gasket I want without all the others falling on the floor. I'm a litle! bit clumsy...

I have seen so many gaskets ruined by cutting on the front -same goes for plastic bags - use scissors where possible as knives can cut the parts inside

Obviously you get the job done, so some constructive comments (Adds to the you tube algorithm if nothing else). Engine oil is a perfectly good oil to use in the main and transfer box. Many engine oils actually perform better at wear protection than so called special gear oils (As suggested by Land Rover service School on a transmission course back in the day). You might want to consider selecting 2 gears at the same time to lock the gearbox solid which will allow you to tighten the layshaft and mainshaft nuts without fear of introducing cloth fibres into the gearbox. A more controversial subject... Consider using rtv automotive silicone sealant INSTEAD of gaskets (Never had any clearance issues). These days I just purchase new rubber seals and a tube of rtv. Purists hate it... My gearboxes have never developed a leak from a "gasket" joint in over 20 years of using the stuff. I still use Hylomar on the selector shaft cover to prevent leakage from there. I can see how much more hassle you are having trying to film at the same time as do... Keep up the great work.

Mentioning oils on YT really gets folk going! Modern oils are so much better - I ran a 200Tdi on Rotella 0w30 for a full year here = -30c to +35c never a flicker of the oil light (and it was working!)

I seem to remember you were supposed to check the lay shaft endfloat, and if required insert shims behind the rear bearing?
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
The end float is controlled by a selective washer behind the froward layshaft bearing - generally they are ok as originally fitted
@nickboylen68734 жыл бұрын
Once the bolt (or nut on earlier models) is fitted to the front of the lay shaft, the only end float is whatever is present in the front bearing. The rear bearing is a roller bearing with separable outer race for that very reason - it’s not sensitive to shaft longitudinal position.

Hi Mike, Great series of videos, enjoying them very much. Some years ago (20 I think) my series 3 Landy started jumping out of 2nd/3rd gear which I diagnosed as a worn synchro. So I removed and dismantled the gearbox, a big job for me at the time with limited garage facilities, replaced the synchro, fitted new bearings and oil seal, reinstalled into the truck and.... it still jumped out of 2nd/3rd!?*!. the vehicle was my daily driver and I was so sickend by this that I bought a military reconditioned box and swapped it out, selling the origional box as faulty. I was told that the reason it continued to jump out of gear was that I had not properly adjusted the end float of the second and third gears. Is this something you checked on this box?
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you will see in later videos Mike
@nickboylen68734 жыл бұрын
By transferring the complete main shaft, that step is not necessary. Float for those gears was set by sand long down the length of the bronze bush they sit on, which is made slightly over size in length to allow this fine tuning. So, you only need to do so if you replace the gears or the bush.
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
As the mainshaft was in excellent condition there was no reason to strip it - and if you have worked on this shaft you will know getting the circlip off is a problem and then getting the pin out of the mainshaft locating the bush is a nightmare without destroying the bush and pulling the tiny pin out - no point in making work!
@GrumpsBarn4 жыл бұрын
...blue hylomar is great if used properly....however I remember seeing countless engines that had failed spectacularly through idiots using half a tube of the stuff on every gasket they fitted, leading to either/or blocked oil strainers and impassable water galleries in engines
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
Which is why I said silicon sealers are not always needed on paper gaskets - I have seen engines assembled where 'more sealer makes a better seal' go bad! I generally use grease on non pressurized gaskets like axles as they are better machined steel, but on 50 year old ally castings Hylomar is a must!
