$2.64M 1971 Lamborghini Countach LP500 Reconstruction - Villa d'Este 2021

During the 2021 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at Cernobbio I have filmed the 1971 Lamborghini Countach LP500 Reconstruction.
The original Countach was destroyed in a crash test. 50 years later, it's been revived in spirit.
Following a lengthy teaser campaign, Lamborghini has brought back to life the original Countach. We're talking about the LP 500 prototype that debuted in March 1971 at the Geneva Motor Show before being destroyed in a crash test three years later. To celebrate the iconic supercar's 50th anniversary, the peeps from Santa'Agata Bolognese have not only created a modern-day equivalent with the Aventador-based LPI 800-4, but also an official reenactment of the first Countach prototype.
Automobili Lamborghini's Polo Storico, the company's in-house restoration workshop, needed more than 25,000 hours to complete the recreation "on behalf of an important collector." The mysterious buyer got in touch with Lamborghini at the end of 2017 to ask them whether it would be possible to resurrect the first Countach prototype. To make it happen, genuine spare parts were used, along with used components, and some parts that had to be completely rebuilt.
The recreation uses replicas of the Cinturato CN12 tires the Geneva showcar had half a century ago after using the Italian tire manufacturer's archives with photos and materials of the 1971 car. The car's rubber measures 245/60R14 for the front and 265/60R14 for the rear and comes from the Pirelli Collezione range, a line of tires for classic cars built between 1930 and 2000. The tires are new and utilize a modern structure and compound, but they have the same tread pattern used back in the 1970s.
As far as the color is concerned, Lamborghini Polo Storico's archives allowed the team to identify the exact shame shade used in 1971 - "Giallo Fly Speciale." To accurately replicate the size of the body, a 3D scan of the LP 400 (chassis 001) was necessary, and it took 2,000 hours of work to finalize the unmistakable lines of the Countach. LP 400 is the designation used for the original Countach production car, launched in 1974.
Lamborghini isn't disclosing the car's price, but it's safe to say the collector had to pay a lot more compared to the modern-day Countach and its eye-watering $2.64M sticker.

Such a pure design. This original LP500 is it for me too! So glad they recreated it. Nothing that was added afterwards improved it from an aesthetic point of view and I think all the subtlety got lost with arches, wings and DOT tail lights. This version actually shows the subtle curves on the shoulder line and the repeated trapezoid theme in the top view so clearly. Even the side intake slats where the rear quarter windows were later added look so much cleaner than the unfortunately awkward airboxes. This still looks so good 50 years later!

Federalization wasn't to blame for the change of the Countach look - it merely changed the bumpers on the cars that came to the US. The main changes were down to cooling, they needed big scoops and the NACA duct to send more air through the radiators, plus some more vents at the back to let the heat out. Even with these changes, they LP400 is a far purer design than the later iterations, which were down to Walter Wolf - a customer who commissioned Dallara (a Lambo engineer who had set up his own company) to put a higher power engine in (actually it was the same as the original LP500 recreated here) and the wider wheels - which necessitated the arches, plus the big spoiler. I like the look of both, but they are very different!

It's because you can't reverse the car with the door shut. The rear visibility is so poor. The guys at the Lambo factory used to sit on the door sill whenever they had to manoeuvre a Countach, so they could see.

It's just the pinnacle of supercar design. Pity it couldn't have reached production in this form. Of course there were issues with overheating etc. The lp400 looks great too but not quite as clean and dramatic as the prototype- the skinny rears on the lp400 look awkward.

Marcello Gandini's purest vision before Wallace tatted it up with ducts and scoops. At 7:18 the wheelbase and rear wheel arch were different on the LP500 from the production cars. I'm not sure if the wheelbase was changed on the donor but it looks right to me.

The Lamborghini Countach was originally a 4-cylinder sports coupe prototype built in 1970 for Lancia by Bertone as the Stratos Zero. It was built on a modified Fulvia HF platform with the 1.6-liter Lancia quad-cam V4 engine. After Lancia turned it down, Bertone transferred the basic design over to Lamborghini this next yeat, 1971. With this pre-production example built in yellow, it moved away from the Fulvia chassis and rebuilt using the chassis and engine placement from the Miura. The title is LP500 Countach but the engine was actually 4.8 liters. It is unknown whwther the engine in this yellow prototype shared the bore and stroke dimensions with the Lancia 1.6 Fulvia V4 and Lamborghini didn't produce its quad-cam V12 engine anywhere close in displacement to 5.0 liters until 1982.

@3.12 very 60s/70s sci fi. Would have liked to have seen it in a different colour -white maybe but especially that bluey green metallic similar to the Joe 90 car. Either way totally stunning
