In this episode of the Billy Yang Podcast, I sat down with ultra endurance athlete Timothy Olson for a conversation about his record setting run on the famed Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). We unpacked all that went into his 51 days along the 2,653 mile route (averaging 51+ miles a day!) that runs from the southern terminus of the Mexican border to the Canadian border traversing vast terrain from the desert to alpine mountains. We talk through various challenges including rerouting from fires, missed water drops, animal encounters and various injuries. We also break down the positive including the support from his family/friends/fans, moving through beautiful topography and much more.

Facinating. Ultra runners seem so abstract from tradition "commercial" athletes, driven by diffrent stars.

Yes! Well done Billy and well done Tim! It really was a mammoth effort by Tim, a real role model in how to forge a new life. Beautiful attitude to life with a beautiful family to boot. I could listen to Tim all day when he’s speaking. So much input and value in what he says. My 70-miler this coming June seems so insignificant.

Great interview Billy. I loved the Cougar story! I was lucky enough to see Timothy at Snoqualmie Pass, it was the end of his day and you could see the wear of the miles on his face. Such a feat of endurance, just the miles alone on one day but then every single day, day after day! An amazing accomplishment!

Timmy, great insight with fasting, I am a fellow ultra runner and have found that taking in adequate nutrition and not eating, just for the sake of eating has helped.

He should listen to his coach. If you're training then don't do intermittent fasting, you're stomach does not "need a rest". If you're hungry then listen to your body and eat!

If you're taking a week off, or you're injured yeah sure intermittent fasting is fine I guess!? Other than that if you're in the middle of a training block. Fasting has no place in endurance sports. If you're constantly training in a fasted state. Or even on a low carb keto diet. Your body won't be able to use carbohydrates as efficiently when you train.
@TheBigBlueMarble
@TheBigBlueMarble 2 жыл бұрын
The idea that runners and hikers must shovel in carbs is a myth. We "need" that because we have over the years trained our bodies to need that.Therefore, you can untrain that. You can train your body to shift more of your energy needs to fat, and IF is the way to do it. That first couple of hours in the morning when you were not hungry...that was your body pulling from fat reserves.
