Thanks Sean. You are 100% correct on how fast and far that oil shoots out of the pan. lol I think last time, I put on a new O-ring I got at O'Reillys. NOW there is a Dorman drain plug for us that has a downward facing hole that directs it straight down! Dorman part # 097-826HP and available at all auto parts stores. It was designed for the trucks that have the sway bar right in front of the oil pan thus making oil splash everywhere, but will still be helpful for 2015 2.7 guys. Thanks for sharing! Cheers from Motown.

Thanks Sean. Like you, I was not feeling very comfortable about 120° twist to tighten the oil drain plug. But, I didn’t try to go beyond the stops that are molded into the composite oil pan. Your video is excellent as it clearly shows the issue. And, yes I do use a new drain plug with each oil change. I did find there is an aftermarket drain plug, the Dorman OE Fix drain plug, which has a spout and valve with downward facing opening that is released with a flathead screwdriver. It looks interesting, but I stayed with the standard plug as this Dorman OE Fix plug might introduce an additional point of failure.

Thanks for the new info. I did actually replace the plug and noticed that it still leaked a bit overnight. It’s a Ford plug from Amazon too. So now I’m not sure what to do as far as stopping a leak. Any suggestions?

Leave your fill cap in when first opening that drain plug, give it just a minute then remove the fill cap and it’s much easier to manage that oil flow as it leaves the pan

Aaaaahhh finally a video with someone who knows what they hell they are doing. Thank you for doing the research and getting this correct! Such ignorance on YT, all other videos are WRONG! THIS IS THE CORRECT VIDEO. Ford OEM oil plug on Amazon for $8 as of Jan 2018. Jebuz people are cheap skates. They spend a bazillion dollars on a truck then bitch and moan like a woman about a very reasonable $8 maintenance part.

Yeah I have a 2016 2.7 and had the oil changed at the dealer since I bought the extended maintenance plan for "free" oil changes up to 100K miles...well anyway It turned 100 K then I did it myself and when I pulled the plastic plug I noticed the part above the O ring was pretty tarnished so that tells me the C-suckers kept replacing the plastic plug and not changing it out and I noticed oil drops around the tube going from the intercooler up to the throttle body...they probably never changed the oil and/or used the wrong type. I also notice an oil smell that is like when your valve covers leak into the exhaust manifolds so the seal(s) it the turbos are probably shot as well although they aren't making any noises yet...I guess you get what you paid for...woulda,coulda shoulda done it myself from the get go!
@DS-TRUCKS5 жыл бұрын
And shoulda used full synthetic...

there's no such thing as extended maintenance plan for "free" oil changes some dealers even have a thing called "Lifetime free oil changes" lol chances are they never really change your oil they just reset your oil life top off fluids then document they did it dont ask me why i know lol used to work at one service dept remember no such thing as free lunch

Great video Sean. This is a little off topic, but I've been doing a little research and for the the F-150 2.7 and 3.5 liter; an " oil catch can" system is recommended because of the turbos. Do you have any thoughts on weather it needs to be installed on the engine or not? Does Ford recommend it? They are not that expensive and seem like a good idea, but I'm not a mechanic. Thanks in advance for your help!
@DS-TRUCKS7 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the carbon comes from the combustion chamber, you can see it in the exhaust system, black soot coming out the tail pipe of DI engines... valves don't seal perfectly... I wouldnt run a catch can... unless ford says so... If it was that easy they would just add more baffles to the pcv system...
@markgennaro1537 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I did notice the on website of Livernois Motorsports that they sell the oil catch can system for the f-150 ecoboost. That's why I was asking you about it. They seem like they know a lot about engines. Maybe when you get a chance ask them about it.
@WaterWalker166 жыл бұрын
Catch-cans are bullshit. More waste of money on ecoboost accessories marketed by profiteers. If they were required Ford would engineers would have included them in the design. Just wondering, how your weather is, whether its raining or whether it's sunny?
@alanholmes23665 жыл бұрын
Biggest thing is change the oil with a full synthetic often (every 5k), use top tier fuel and change the spark plugs every 40k miles per the factory recommended intervals. This will help the engine have a compete burn and not have as much carbon. Newer F150's have dual stage direct injection both port and in the cylinder so it's a non issue.
@dalemccluskey18445 жыл бұрын
I've changed my oil a number of times and I think every 3rd change you my want to change the Oio Plug. Every time is overkill...in my humble opinion. Bye the way, it's a slick set up. Do not over tighten and have a good look with a light to be sure it's in the correct position..

Hi Sean, question for you. Do you think a 2.7l would be adequate for towing a 22 foot travel trailer weighing about 5,000 lbs loaded? The truck will be my daily driver and tow a couple a weekends each month. I like the lower cost and better mpg of the 2.7L but am worried it might be under powered when towing the trailer.
@pontg8gt7 жыл бұрын
yogiyoda the 2.7 is more than enuff for that, its capable of towing 8500lbs, but realise it will suck sum gas with those turbos n use probly around 10-12mpg may b better depending in ur driving habits 😉
@DS-TRUCKS7 жыл бұрын
2015 EcoBoost absolutely... It my book 10 to 12 Towing is pretty good... I did a towing test with my two seven with a 2400 lb trailer... Return 14.9 MPG... I have a gas F250... gets about 10 to the gallon pulling the same trailer... And if I'm lucky about 14.9 - 15 to the gallon empty! So I would say that F-150s are very efficient tow rigs!
@DS-TRUCKS7 жыл бұрын
yogiyoda that's a tough call... The two seven will definitely have enough power, and I think it would be the most efficient as far as MPG... As long as you're within the specifications of the truck you should be good. Also keep an eye on your tongue weigh... Definitely make sure you order a trailer brake... I will get the highest possible trailer package that you can get with that engine.
@yogiyoda7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sean, I'd get the max tow package so it would be within the tow specs. Just curious why you are upgrading to the 3.5L?
@yogiyoda7 жыл бұрын
Thanks 2015 EcoBoost. Yeah, I heard the ecoboosts use fuel for cooling when towing :( But I'm thinking most of the mileage would be unloaded to make up for that.

I’m looking to buy my first truck to tow my boat. I maintain my vehicles myself and keep them for 15-18 years since I buy new. F150 2.7 would be my first choice. However the Saga of disposable plugs and ever leaking plastic oil pans and transmission pans with no drain plugs makes me reluctantly look towards Tundra SR5 and headache free boating/fishing experience. Why Ford does this to their customers?

The leak DOESN"T SHOW in the driveway because the Oil PAN is covered by a padded wind deflector that catches and absorbs the leaking oil from the drain plug preventing the oil from reaching the driveway so you can never know if your plug is leaking by looking under your truck for the leaks
@greghale7177 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I read this was an "EPA" thing.. That if the oil leaked, the EPA didn't want i to leak on the ground... Not sure how true that is, but I wouldn't doubt it.
@DS-TRUCKS7 жыл бұрын
yousuf kan if that were the case I think there would be traces of oil on the transmission pan... There's no measurable loss of oil... Just oiliness near the drain plug at this point...
@DS-TRUCKS7 жыл бұрын
Greg Hale I'm pretty sure under bumper to bumper warranty, there shouldn't be any oil seepage on the undercarriage of the vehicle...
@jamesclayton30785 жыл бұрын
Yousuf kan is exactly right. My low oil pressure light came on a few days ago. I checked the oil and it was two quarts low. No oil in my driveway and haven’t seen any on the undercarriage. Today, I changed my oil and the wind deflector was soaked in oil. The oil plug was leaking and the deflector was soaking it up. I just put a new drain plug in and hopefully that’ll fix the leak, for now.

On the 2.7L, fill up with exact 5.6 quarts of oil during your oil changes. 6 quarts will overfill.
@greghale7177 жыл бұрын
If you COMPLETELY let the oil drain, approximately 30 minutes, like the Ford bulletin suggests, then it will take exactly 6 quarts. With the 2.7 engine, it does take a while longer than normal to drain all the oil back down to the pan....
@DontComeToMyHouse7 жыл бұрын
Greg Hale that's not accurate. I've let it drain for 5 hours (went to the zoo with my kids) and 5.6 quarts put the oil level PERFECTLY at the top of the fill mark on the dipstick.
@greghale7177 жыл бұрын
don't want to create a debate. but mine took EXACTLY six quarts and my oil level is the top of the "see thru" dots at the top. so, run your truck with 5.6 quarts if you think that's what it actually takes. end of discussion here.
@greghale7177 жыл бұрын
Even a Ford Tech verifies 6 quarts.
@DS-TRUCKS7 жыл бұрын
you have to account for the oil stored in the oil filter hosing... 6 quarts should read high... you have to start it and let the system prime then check it... 6 quarts is the capacity with filter...

Just because it's new doesn't make it bad people. It works if you do it correctly. Put a new plug in each time and it will seal right every time. Plugs are inexpensive to replace. Not going to be over torqued or stripped out like with many metal pans.
