You can definitely block acrylic! Steam makes it softer and much drapier as well. I don't know where the myth that you can't block acrylic comes from, probably from people who don't use it very often lol, but it isn't true. It definitely isn't necessary to block the sweater, it looks gorgeous already. But you could probably block the bottom ribbing so it doesn't cinch in and your partner likes it more.

I totally fell for that myth so I’m glad I learned that. I never needed to block something I’ve made from acrylic so I never really thought about it. I’ll probably try and block out the ribbing a bit. Thank you for sharing 💕

I second you on being more intentional with purchasing acrylic, I've decided that I can only purchase it secondhand. There's no shortage of lovely colors in the thrift store, and its removing something from the waste stream. Also, you can block acrylic with steam! The heat makes the plastic fibers malleable. My steamer is one of my crafting essentials, its soo satisfying to watch the fabric relax. I'm learning to spin on a Turkish spindle right now and I forsee a dragon's hoard of beautiful handspun in my future. My stretch goal is to spin for a shawl this fall, we'll see how far we get. Congratulations on your beautiful finished objects. Happy crafting!

I agree! There’s so much in the waste stream already. I totally didn’t know about steaming acrylic so I learned something new. I’ve never really needed to block acrylic so very handy to know. Turkish spindling is my favorite!!! Especially with colorful fiber. The little nests are so cute. Happy spinning!!!!

What a great blog, really enjoyed this!! I also knit the Nightshift shawl and found it small, I blocked aggressively which helped. I also added tassels to the long corners with left over yarn. It really helped it sit better. Love my shawl. Julie - Western Australai

It’s always such a pleasure to join you for another knitting vlog, your energy is beautiful, and I can’t help but gush over your adorable little boy he is precious, bless you and your lovely family 🖤 (also I see no one else has mentioned this BUT you could run some elastic thread to cinch up the wider neckline on the gib sweater you knit for your husband) As for the bottom ribbing the few things I can think of: 1. You can use steam to block acrylic so you may be able to get away with stretching out the bottom hem 2. You could completely undo the bind off and either re-knit with a larger needle for the ribbing (same size you used for the body should work just fine), or stick with the smaller needle and add increases before the ribbing to prevent the cinching.

Thank you so much! Appreciate you being here. Those are great tips I’ll have to give them a try if he insists. I probably won’t want to frog but worth trying to block it.

Hi ! Really happy to see you knitting a nightshift shawl with handspun, as it was the pattern that made me decide to start spinning. I am also spinning nest fiber club color for it, but going more for a DK 3 ply yarn, as I saw in the comments on the dream state ravelry page that several people found their skeins to be a lighter weight than advertised. Maybe that was the reason for such a difference in wingspan pre-block ? Watching you knitting it and the beautiful result just renewed my energy on this project ! Great video, wishing you a happy 2025 ;)
@escarla
@escarla 15 күн бұрын
I love that!! That’s smart I didn’t even look into dream state but luckily it blocked out nicely. Some of my handspun was on the heavier side of worsted so I think that was a big part of it. I hope you finish yours soon!

Maybe you should do the handspun first in your stash and then from there you'd get rid of some bulk? Just thinking of how to organize

I see your watching 90 days the last resort! Are you enjoying the season so far? 😊
@escarla
@escarla 13 күн бұрын
Haha yes the 90 day franchise is my guilty pleasure. This is the first last resort season I watch and mostly because of the cast. It’s def entertaining. I don’t know why Natalie and Josh are there but Natalie is certainly bringing the drama 😂 a lot of scenes feel so staged and the “therapists” are barely doing their jobs but it’s a fun watch for my weekly drama intake.
