2 Beautiful 1942 Gated Otis Elevators (originally AB SEE)

(9-27-2013) At the Smithsonain Castle. PLEASE NOTE! these are NOT public! DO NOT ATTEMPT to ride with out permission. These are some awesome elevators. While the controllers have been replaced they are mostly original. These were originally AB SEE elevators. This is what the curator sent me : "In 1910-11, the first two passenger elevators were installed in the Castle, one in the North entrance hall, the other in the East Wing. Both were manufactured by the A.B. See Elevator Company. These were replaced in 1942 with the present Otis elevators. Although the mechanical equipment for both has been recently upgraded, the 1942 cabs remain intact."

I visited the Smithsonian Castle along with several other branches of the Smithsonian like the National Museum of Natural History and the two connected sub-level art museums in 2007 and 2010. I've seen the 1st elevator in person but did not ride it because like you said they aren't public as only the 1st floor of the Castle is public.

A..B.See folded in the mid-1930s. Ironically, the company was started by Alonzo B. See, a engineer, mechanic, and foreman with Otis.

first time I was here was in 1992. it was closed off then. these elevators carry office workers to their offices

In 1942 gates were very common in elevators! It wasn't until the 50s that automatic doors became the industry standard
