Mikeycal, Thank you for your help learning Blender it's been 38 years since I was in school for TV and Radio Broadcasting well the changes in the industry are huge. I learned how to do all this with video tape and after school realized I had a face for radio and a voice for silent movies and became a sales person. Well lately I've been involved with a MeetUp Group in Chicago that dose gut rehabs on brick bungalow and I decided that it was time to get back to what I loved doing, editing TV and your tutorials have been a great help learning the tools of today big difference from from video tape. Thank you. Tommy TBones

Hello Mike, I just want to thank you again. 23 hours ago, "Blender" was just a kitchen device. After I found this open-source video editor and opened it, I was like, "wow. Guess it's time to start hunting down the KZbin tutorials." Your series was the first search result, and it walked me through start to finish, in a clear, methodical, complete, and organized fashion. Now, I have a video, complete with about a dozen clips, all overlapping, complete with some basic special effects! There was hardly anything that I needed to know that wasn’t in your tutorial. The clear title and detailed “table of contents” in each video were also a huge help. Now my first Blender video is complete, and before the deadline! (Extra bonus: I even had time to eat and sleep!) I don’t think I could have done it without your guidance. Have a blessed week man! You sure made mine...

+Mikeycal Meyers Thanks for the reply! At this point, the only things that I needed to do that weren't covered were the following: how to install Ffmpeg (not your typical exe file. Had to install a special program to unzip it, and then do some pretty strange things to get it installed) Use Ffmpeg (command prompt!!!). Also, how to reverse the playback of a clip (just the "backwards" checkbox). The only other things I can think of would be how to use text: titles, captions, subtitles. And how to insert pictures (even though that is fairly straight-forward!) Thanks so much man!

i watched quite a few vids on blender, and they made me fell rather stupid , they went really fast (I know I can pause) but it just feels like there trying to get through this as fast as possible, however, in your tutorials , your taking time not just how to do the things i want to be able to do, but your showing me why, you show the reason behind the options, this is actuly making me learn the program and not just imitating peoples tutorials. Thx.

Wow, thanks for the fast response, brother. So, I checked the video that was exported from Blender to my storage file and there was no aliasing. It must be an aspect of the Blender display itself, which is fine as long as what I export looks proper. The export does looks slightly less saturated, but I hadn't even graded it yet. These tutorials are great and it really seems like a person (or company) could operate almost entirely off of open-source platforms, from OS to mixing music, word processors, and this awesome app. Keep up the good work!

I had such great comments and suggestions in my 2013 blender series that I was able to remake and improve the entire series starting in late 2014. The greatest part about doing a popular series is that my viewers keep me on top of the latest advancements and video editing trends. My gift to them is to share the knowledge, that they have collectively contributed to me, back to the community through my channel. Thanks for watching!

Mikeycal Meyers Ha...I hope your right. every time I try to learn something new in Blender it's headaches + rage quit.. lol. Could you by any chance point me to documentation or a tutorial video that explains how to put a "black bar" or "blur" over top of sensitive information? I've got an email address and and API key i want to blur/black out... and I've tried coloring over the sensitive info with the "grease brush", but can't figure out how to apply that to only a certain portion of the video, and I tried "rotoscoping" blurring out the info, but I have an email address and an api key to blur out at the same time, and I can't figure out how to make two separate blurring spots. Like Holy guacamole.. all i want is a damn black bar to cover secret info.. but that is near impossible to figure out. Could you possibly either point me in the right direction in the manual, or make a video on it???

Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere Pro are programs that are designed for Professional Video Editing. Blender can be used for Professional Video Editing too, but it doesn't have as many features. Having said that, I believe that Blender is the Best Free, Open Source, Cross Platform video editor on the Market. You can render video at 4K, You can do just about everything you need to do for a feature film.

This is answered in a different comment (joshua rene described a problem, then Mikeycal replied that it was caused by variable framerate). Quote: "you video were likely recorded at a Variable frame rate. Blender requires that video be a constant frame rate. You can usually Lock the framerate in most software but if you can't, you can convert the video to a constant frame rate using free programs like Handbrake.fr . In the video tab of that program there is a constant framerate option. It will fix the video for you."

Hello mr Meyers. I'm taking a whirl at Lets Plays. When I import my video file with its audio, that imports fine. When I import my commentary audio it starts off synced fine, but gradually falls out of sync. It reads at the same FPS as my video, so I'm really at a loss for why sometimes it desyncs itself.

I am enjoying a lot your videos. Perhaps you could do a video explaining how Blender's interface works. I hade issues at first and had to go look elsewhere to understand the basic principles of the panes.
@MikeycalMeyers
@MikeycalMeyers 6 жыл бұрын
+eshneto Good idea. The "layouts" are designed to simplify showing the Windows(panes) that function together. It often gets confusing because advanced users like to configure custom layouts that work best for their needs. This makes blender look different depending on who is teaching. I try to minimize this issue by setting the layout with the user in video #1 and always starting with that same layout in each video to minimize confusion. But widow panes can still be confusing when you are doing things across different layouts and your render is being modified by a pane that isn't even visible.

Hanhee Yang My guess is that the File Filter option is ON. By default, Blender will try to filter out all files it thinks are not compatible with blender based on the file extension - (example: .mov, .mp4) There is a file filter button along the top of the file import window that you can click to turn the file filter on and off.

Nathalie Vermeiren The way the file filter works is that it automatically only shows file types that are compatible. What is the extension of the file that you are trying to import? .mp4? .avi? If it isn't showing up in the list, you probably need to convert the file to something that is compatible using handbrake.fr/

Hi Mike, thanks much for these tutorials as they are extremely helpful. I play a game called The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim on my PC and my GPU came with NVIDIA Shadowplay. So lately, I've been recording video's and rendering them with Adobe After Effects. Well, long story short. I edited a sequence of video clips and had After Effects render them. 12 hours later, After Effects basically told me it couldn't continue and the output file may be damaged. I can't begin to express how disgusted I was. So in returning to Blender, I thought I would see how well it handles larger renders. It's been awhile since I've used Blender as a video editor and your tutorials helped immensely. Thanks again, Liked and Subscribed

Just so you know, there is a maximum number of frames you can render in a single blender project. The limit is 300,000 frames. If your video is 60 fps, that would be about 83 minutes of video. I would recommend recording video at 30 fps to cut render time in half. Also, make sure you render out a short test render before doing the final render and be careful that you computer doesn't go into a suspend during rendering - that may be what caused the after effects render issue.
@SkyrimBeast
@SkyrimBeast 9 жыл бұрын
Mikeycal Meyers Yes After Effects has a limit as well. I think it's like 3 hours. As far as AE goes, I don't think I'll be using it to render anymore because it's such a RAM hog by design. I like how Blender does things in the background conserving in CPU power. I just hovered over your name and we have something in common. Here's a hint, it's located by the LAKE and full of WOOD. How about that

Hey Mikeycal Meyers, I'm having a bit of trouble. I'm sure it's something simple. I have an HP Envy Notebook laptop. Extremely powerful for a notebook pc so there should be no problem there. (Has i7, lots of Ram, etc.) Whenever I try to add a movie strip from my recording software (Mirillis Action!) it comes up with "Error: File could not be loaded". It's originally recorded in AVI and at 30fps. Blender is set for 30 fps and all other settings are like you recommended. It can upload images no problem and I've tried converting the files to MP4 but still says the same thing. I'm currently on version 2.72. I had it working before but I had to reset my computer and re-program blender etc. Any ideas?

Unfortunately anytime I try to learn something from these type of videos something is left out. In this case it is where to find and how to import the demo videos "tears Of Steel' and Big Buck Bunny.' I like to follow 'step by step' but that is impossible without having the videos you are using. Please let us know where to get them and how to put them into the program so we can follow exactly what you are doing. Thanks. One more minor gripe, versions change so fast please, please, please... mention at the top of a series of videos which version you are using. Thanks again, I may sound like an old grouch but I do appreciate the time and effort you put into these things.

I generally put "Tears of Steal" and "Big Buck Bunny" source links in each video's description. Below the time index. Here are both of them for your convenience: bigbuckbunny.org mango.blender.org You can always see which version of blender I am using because it shows the version at the top center of blender, next to the blender icon where it says 2.7x. Just make sure you are watching my 2014-2015 video series and you will do fine. This is my current video editing series that covers how to use blender for people using blender 2.71 and higher. All the things I show you in these videos work the same way on the most current version of blender, but when there has been a slight change to something, I put the correction in a highlight over the video. So make sure you leave the video highlights on when watching a video for the first time. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the wonderful video training programme. As I was making a study of the programme with the help of your wonderful training video, I experienced two issues. After the first few videos coming out extremely okay, some of the subsequent ones started displaying a lenght difference of 1 between the video and audio strips. Whatever I did as per the instructions in your video, (frame rate 15), and also after changing the frame rate to 30 via Handbrake, the numerical difference persists. Another issue is that when trying to Animate the edited video strip, I get the following message: QUOTE: timebase 999/1000000 not supported by MPEG 4 standard, the maximum admitted value for the timebase..........END OF QUOTE. Did I miss anything?

1) This is an old glitch. Technically, it shouldn't matter if you leave it. The audio and video will stay in sync. Having said that, I have noticed that sometimes if you take the source video that is causing this error, and move it to another directory, it will import correctly. 2) Are you using a custom frame rate, that may be causing your timebase issue.

I have moved one file to another location and tried it. However, the single digit difference is still there. However, this does not worry me much. I shall accept your assurance in this regard. However, not being able to use the Animation button is quite a block. I am just pasting here the Render Settings details as I find it after doing a Set Render Size: It is a video taken on Logitech Web Camera. After setting the Video Render Size, Display is: Keep UI X: 320 px Y: 240 px Start Frame: 1 End Frame: 212274 Frame Step: 1 Aspect ratio: X: 1.000 Y: 1.000 Frame Rate: Custom (1000.0 fps) FPS: 10 /: 0.010 Output Xvid Encoding: Format: Xvid Bitrate: 6000 GOP Size: 18 Rate Minimum: 0 Maximum: 9000 Buffer: 1792 Rate (Given under the GOP Size location) : 10080000 Packet Size: 2048 Audio codec: MP3 Could there be anything that I did wrong? I hope I am not taking too much of your time!

I noticed that the error started quite suddenly. And it was definitely connected to the single digit (1) error in the strip lengths. I remembered that I had changed some settings in the Logitech Webcam controls. I went back, and changed the Antiflicker to Off. It was on PAL - 50 Hz. I do not understand what I did. However, on checking the video back in Blender, I found that the strip length have come back to normal and the Animation is working. I will check the results again later.

David Hovasse Some things to check: 1) Does it have the same results when you add the movie with "Add" -> "Movie" in the menu? 2) Underneath the video there should be a channel setting. It should be set to "Channel: 0". 3) Did you change your render engine to "Cycles Render"? If so, set it back to "Blender Render" and see if there is a difference. 4) Make sure that you are running the latest blender, 2.72b.

thelmarrie Double check that the "Frame Rate" in your "Properties Window" is set to the correct frame rate. You can tell that the frame rate is correct if your Video Strip and Audio Strip are the same length and the same number of frames. If they match but it still doesn't work, make sure that "AV-sync" is turned on in the playback menu. If it still doesn't work, try resetting your computer. If it still doesn't work, the problem may have something to do with the format or codec that the source video is using. What type of Video are you importing? AVI, MOV, MP4... I know that WMV doesn't seem to work and some people have reported that 3GP files don't seem to work... By the way, thanks for watching!!!

I've heard that smart phones will often record in variable frame rate and drop the frame rate in low light conditions. I think the advantage of Variable frame rate recordings is it requires less cpu power. The problem is that most video editors sync the audio based on a stable, constant frame rate. If there is a way to turn ON Constant Frame Rate recording for your phone, I would do that. Other things that you can do to improve the frame rate is lower the recording resolution and record in well lit locations.

Just 2 questions pls: A file in 1080p with about 80000 Frames takes nearly 1 Hour to produce a proxy file. Is that normal ? When i do for example a movie project with maybe 100 takes do i have to Import all 100 files first to make the proxyfile in one run or do i have to Import a take, make a Proxy file and then the next one 100 times ?
@MikeycalMeyers

a video proxy needs to be made per unique video that is being imported into the VSE.
@MikeycalMeyers

so if you have 100 separate source videos, they each need a proxy. as for 1 hour for 80,000 frames, that could be normal depending on the original resolution and the percentage setting you are using.

There is a 300,000 frame limit in blender. So that means we can do: 2 Hours 46 Minutes of video at 29.97 FPS 1Hour 23 Minutes of video at 60 fps If you need to make a video that is longer, you need to do it in multiple projects and stitch it together with FFMPEG "concatenate" feature.
