If ever you're fortunate enough to be entertained by otters, keep the location of them secret. I learned this lesson the hard way.

I find otters endlessly entertaining so I'm glad to have these recommendations! The Otter's Tale especially appeals to me.

Otters are such interesting animals, I’ve never seen a wild one though. Both these books sound interesting in their own ways, thank you for your detailed reviews of them. 😊📚

If you aren't already aware of it, "Down From The Mountain" by Bryce Andrews is a FANTASTIC book about brown bears. It's a kind of right in between these two books about otters in how it approaches the subject animal. It's incredibly moving, focuses on conservation needs of bears and how wild bears should stay wild and respected. I cried when I read it!

I really appreciated how you discussed anthropomorphism. It was nuanced and thoughtful. Love the "Further Reading" section!

I've loved otters ever since I was traumatised as a child but Tarka the Otter 😅 I'm definitely going to give both of these a go but for sure The Otters Tale, I actually for the most part like the anthropomorphic style or writing with animals so I think it will work well for me!

I have read and liked both of these. I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses, with The Otter's Tale being more narrative non-fiction rather than strictly natural history. I have also been lucky enough to meet both authors here in the UK at the talks they have done on their respective books. My reviews are on Good Reads for these and I have even posted pictures of otters that I have seen in the local rivers in Wimborne

I just put Otter Country on hold, so I'm grateful for your thoughts. I think this might be a slow and steady read for me.

Thank you for such detailed reviews. Anthropomorphism is something that absolutely annoys me. I like a more realistic approach and Otter Country, despite the extraneous content, sounds like a lovely read for me.
