I think this is the first restore/repair I ever saw of your's. I will hold all negative comments. I was glad to see your simple technique for testing the transistors on an analog testing meter.. Not so easy to do that on a digital testing meter. Your video kept my attention.

Installing power transistors without checking voltage bias is very risky. You might end up changing them again and again.
@JRNelson784 жыл бұрын
As i saw, there is no trimmers on the PCBs. SO i guess it`s an automatic biasing, they monitor the output offset, and may be that chip on the board (may be OP amp based circuit) ajdusts it.
@2Cineman4 жыл бұрын
I've repaid many amplifiers, and in most cases where ther are blown output transistors, the drivers are usualy blown too . didn't see the guy do any fauslt finding, other than a diode check of the output transistors - fake ivideo if you ask me

Looks to me like one of the many inexpensive amplifiers that cloned the layout of the Crest CA series amplifiers. No schematics appear to be available, although the lack of mica insulators shows that the circuit topology is not the same since the collectors are apparently grounded. By the way, there is a torque specification for TO-3P transistors, usually between 5 and 10 inch-pounds- significantly less than people tend to think. It has been mentioned already, but there is a reason why the original transistors failed. Checking the quiescent current in the output stage as well as running a sine wave test into a dummy load and looking at the output on a scope are worth doing.
@gino32864 жыл бұрын
"the collectors are apparently grounded" i would like to ask if this is a good technical solution. It seems very convenient for output stages. I have a qsc usa 400 and i guess it is made in the same way ? What low power pro amp would you recommend ? something with 250w/4ohm i mean. Thanks a lot and regards, gino
@H-774 жыл бұрын
@@gino3286 Very much depends on the implementation. QSC has had a lot of success with that topology- they perform well and are very reliable. I've never really played with the topology myself, but eliminating the mica washers has both thermal and cost of manufacturing advantages. Another way to eliminate the need for mica washers is to use separate, hot heatsinks for the NPN and PNP sides.
@gino32864 жыл бұрын
@@H-77 I think it is a interesting method The heat transfer must be optimal and also the thermal equilibrium between the output transistors. Grounding the heatsink maybe improve also safety ? Thanks a lot again. Kind regards, gino

Great video ... but replaced all those shorted components ... all back together and flick the switch and Voilà !! works !! Surely there was abit of last minute oopsy in between ??
@AstrosElectronicsLab4 жыл бұрын
Meh, don't think so. Usually when output transistors short (because the output was shorted to ground), replacing them is usually all you have to do - if you're lucky. As long as it didn't take out any of the biasing components, all good. It looks like at least one fuse blew on each board protecting the rest of it.
@danielcifuentes61453 жыл бұрын
Amazing job! 👍

Mr E, theres no way that you know how all that goes back together. I'm convinced the 2nd half of this video is just the 1st half running backwards.
@AstrosElectronicsLab4 жыл бұрын
Doubtful. Also, a camera was recording the entire time. It isn't too hard to go back and look at shot footage to see where things go. Plus, if you work on enough amplifiers (I know from experience), it's not hard to work out where wires go. PCBs are marked and cable lengths bend over time to roughly where they want to connect to.
