Best music channel on KZbin. Not that I can actually DO any of this, but I love jazz. As for music theory, I "get" some of it in the same way I can understand French by reading it. But really, you're a terrific pianist and most engaging host.

I play lots of substitution chords already, but I really like the way you approach it. One minor point, though, though D is in the Eb whole step/half step diminished scale, and sounds great in this context, I wonder if it would confuse some folks just starting out, since the Eb diminished 7th chord has (as you of course know) a C and not a D. [I often lead to the major I chord with the voicings Eb, F#, A, D, and F#, A, C, F...along similar lines to what you are teaching here.) Thanks for all your work here!

I was wondering about that as well. Even the Fm7 is actually a 9 and the the dominant chords are extended as well

As a bassplayer do I have to adjust my notes to the subs or can I play what i played before?
@patzimmusic

I'd imagine it would sound best to play the roots of the substitutions otherwise you might wind up with some weird dissonances...not that most people would even notice...unless they are jazz musicians

i know it seems obvious but i'd just try it and let my ears guide. it can be very satisfying to have a bass line spell out outside movements but so can be prolonged dissonance finally resolving. really a matter of taste. but as with any type of more abstract art it's always better to know what's going on and having the option to spell it out.

in an improvised jazz space youd never know when to expect it so its not a worry really

Bass player here too, I think it would work both ways, I like to practice these kind of substitutions to internalize the sound and jump on when I hear them but also many of these work equally as well by creating contrast against "standard" bass roots

Also, you could play the substitution when the piano/guitar doesn't. It'll add some tension which you resolve in a bar or so. Just do it sparingly and let your ears guide you.

My favorite chord substitution is the 2-5 of tritone sub. You're in C and you play Dm-G7 Ebm-Ab7 then C. Thank you for the wonderful video Adam!!!
@Digiquarium
@Digiquarium 3 жыл бұрын
The tritone substitution of the dominant in C is D flat 7, so A flat minor 7/ D flat 7 sus to D flat 7, to C major. A flat 7 is the tritone dominant in the key of G, and the diatonic dominant of D flat.

I'm a guitarist but I seem to be watching more piano voicing tutorials than guitar vids these days. I like the different perspective and it certainly helps my playing and theory. Thank you for including the chord symbols. I could suss out the bass clef and learn the voicings as written, but the piano chords don't always translate well to the guitar as written. Once again, thanks for including the chord symbols and for the great lessons.

I was under the impression the first example would be more on the passing chords side, than substitution chords. But, I admit to being musically illiterate as well...

Hey guys, why do we get better daily guided practice sessions here for free than we do as members of OS? I know it's a lot of work but I subscribed partially based on seeing these video sessions, the clunky audio player and the weird way to view the course work has killed my desire to practice along with you guys. Overall I love what you're doing but I actually regret signing up for OS and I hope anyone that's thinking of signing up reads this and considers that just being a youtube subscriber is a more effective use of their money. Hopefully that changes soon.

Hey Duncan. I appreciate the feedback on the platform. I also stand behind the quality of the Daily Guided Practice Sessions 100%. I’ve made over 225 of them in the last 10 months and and we’ve seen real progress and real improvement for hundreds of piano players. It’s those deep dives everyday that matter. We’re always trying to improve how it’s presented and some player changes are coming but I’m confident in the quality and the value of the course. As always, hit me up if you want a refund for any reason. adam@openstudiojazz.com

@@OpenStudioJazz Adam - thanks for taking the time to reply. Please don't confuse my complaint about the platform with a complaint about the quality/quantity of the content. You guys are the best in the business and I know for sure you're helping tons of people, myself included. I just feel like these videos misrepresent the service you are advertising by posting them. It implies that this is what you get daily when you sign up. Instead, I use the app and if I miss anything, navigating around on that tiny player is a struggle and the content is posted elsewhere. I know it's not the focus of the sessions but the visuals when it comes to fingering and even posture is a big bonus - obvious or you wouldn't have that overhead cam. This isn't even really directed towards you, I was hoping this would fall on the ears of someone who does the code/website for you guys. I won't ask for a refund, I guess I'll just keep coming to youtube for the streamlined version of the sessions and hope someday you move towards creating daily video versions with a better player. All the best and thanks again for all the great content.
