We think he was doing both because he referenced God as a whole & seemingly lumped it all in together for the bit. As we pointed out in the video, we agree organized religion is something completely different than spirituality and it has been used to gain power & influence for the wrong reasons.

Well, you do have to think about the "man in the sky looking down" theory. But yes, his aim was primarily at organized religion...which, by definition is a cult. I am spiritual and believe in a divine source, whether you call it God, Bruce, Linda etc. It is, imho, a core need for inner growth. Love your discussion and opinions!

He only mocked 'organized religion' in the bit about god always needing money. The rest was a direct attack on core Christian doctrine (concept of hell, the ten commandments, the logic behind prayer, etc). It's quite a standard defense strategy for believers to respond: Oh, it's only an attack on the church, not on (my) religion itself 😏

I've been hearing that quote for quite some time. I used to like it. That is until you think about it. Then you will find that it makes no sense. The reason a theists doesn't believe in other religions is because the religion they do believe in tells them that they have the one true religion and that all other religions are wrong. This is obviously not the reason that atheists don't believe in religious claims. There are many good atheists quotes. You should pick a new favorite.
@riffgroove
@riffgroove Жыл бұрын
@jeremybr2020 No, it makes perfect sense. You need to look at it from the point of the theist. They believe their religion is the "One true" religion, which is exactly what any adherent of any other religion would believe. The reasons a Catholic has for disregarding Buddhism are the exact same reasons a Buddhist disregards Catholicism. An atheist simply doesn't make any particular distinction between the two of them.

What? Is that something to be proud of? You not accepting their answers? It is illogical, what were you expecting, a math solution that even Einstein can't figure out? Religion that has abused their people the most, is Christianity, we heard so many complains over and over and over, and literally, sometimes I even wonder, are Atheist that smart? I looked myself in the mirror and I started to wonder, what the hell makes me different than believers? If I shoot someone, get caught, serve time, but if I'm a believer, I shoot someone, get caught, serve time in this world and in the next world. It comes to the question, what if I don't get caught? Religion maybe a stupid thing, but it is necessary for normal people who can't act on normal moral situations. Look at US, you think they need god or Atheism the most?

I spent 7 years in Catholic school. Like George, at the age of reason (16), I too became an atheist. In college I had several classes (Philosophy Major) in world religions and found that most religions are fundamentally the same... it's the people who decide to become the "interpreters" of whatever sacred text are the problem. They twist and cherry pick whatever fits "their" ideas and throw the rest out the window. Organized religion is a business, plain and simple. It's there to control people and pull in money.

This is going to be a Carlin type rant. As an athiest who grew up in a mostly religious Christian family, the more people around me tried to explain religion in a logical way as a child, the more I realized they had no clue how logic works. I'm also autistic so logic is what I always fall back on, provable facts make more sense than stories that constantly change depending on the situation and, reasons for things being are just because. One of the main questions I always ask someone who is trying to convince me of a God is, Why is abortion not OK? This question works even better if the person has ever miscarried. The answer I get over 95% of the time is that God wouldn't allow someone to get pregnant if the baby was not meant to be born. I then follow up with, What about babies that are killed after they are born in a car accident or something? Most of the time I get, Because God had a better purpose for them so he took them. Next question is, what about miscarriages? If God wanted the baby to be born why would he kill it before it was even born? Again I usually get the better higher purpose answer. Next I say, So if God wants the baby he will do whatever it takes to kill the baby such as an auto accident, falling off a bed, being murdered by another human, etc. To which I get a Yes. Then I hit them with the question nobody can answer. Why is abortion bad? God obviously wanted that baby and asked you to send it to him right? And what I usually get in response is, That's not how it works! Don't be stupid. Occasionally I just get, Only God can answer that. When someone can make sense of a simple question like that, I will consider believing. And not with circular logic. And as an athiest I don't not believe in a creator of some sort. I just don't have any evidence of one at this moment other than stuff written by humans that makes no sense and constantly changes. And that is nothing to base changing your way of thinking and living for. Also if we were created by this perfect being, then I being an autistic, athiest must be what he wanted, so why question what must be exactly as it is supposed to be, or try to get nonbelievers to believe? I say if believing farfetched stories helps you deal with living by giving you something to blame your imperfections on and a reason to improve yourself due to fear of going to hell, believe away. I myself know people are all imperfect including myself and I don't need to be controlled by fear to want to improve myself. I take responsibility for me.

i will answer for you why abortion is bad. there's differences between fetus who died because of abortions vs baby died because his time is out. that fetus won't be answer to God but the person who kill the fetus will be asked why she kills the baby. and if she said because this body belong to me, God will said i lend that body to you. you didn't create yourself, none of human capable to create their own body while they still in fetus. dead by natural cause, God won't asked the mom about what happened because that the baby fate. before baby given life, God asked the soul first about about life expectancy will be at that point and if the soul agree, god Will reset that memory as a test so we can be born tested until we be revived again in hereafter, our memory will be returned back as early as God ask our soul

i've always been in awe of how george so eloquently distinguishes spirituality and personal beliefs from organized religion. you gotta think of the time period he was in, and how the government quite often used the bible as leverage to sway public belief in certain ways (abortion is just one of the issues that first pops into my mind--if you've noticed how modern anti-abortion arguments in comparison to just 20 years ago, almost completely avoid the religious talking point in mainstream media, because most people these days advocate more for a separation of church and state). i've always believed that george hyper-fixated on religion so much BECAUSE he understood how dangerous organized religion can be in terms of cult-like behavior and mindless obedience.

And don't say it's people causing all of that when you consider natural consider disasters, childhood cancer and other diseases, that some animals must violently predate on other animals just for survival, and that the Bible actually endorses stonings, putting to death nonbelievers, and slavery. And don't invoke Jesus because he never directly said a word in opposition to any of that. And please do your homework first, any of you who would try to claim the Bible doesn't endorse what I mentioned.

As someone who *was* raised Christian but no longer believes, the mindset is kind-of insane. I was taught that everyone automatically deserved to go to hell and be tortured forever for existing as a human (they would say for sinning and/or not believing, but basically not being perfect is enough to send someone to hell). As a result, everything is so dire. When you think that everyone is going to this place of horrible eternal torment, after believing yourself so you don't go there, all you can do is try to warn people. You feel obligated to, and it is heavily implied if not outright stated that if people who could've believed die and go to hell if you had the opportunity to warn them and didn't, their blood is on your hands. The thing about growing up Christian is you are terrified *constantly.* You live in terror -- if not terror that you will go to hell, then terror that everyone else will, and it will be your fault because you didn't warn them. And if you have social anxiety and are afraid to talk to people in general, well sucks to be you...if you care about people going to hell at all, you better get over that.

The problem might be that you describe our world as perfect system, as if everything has been created exactly for us to develop and thrive. This is known as the puddle analogy in which a puddle wakes up one day to find itself in a hole, and it says “This is a fine hole because it fits me perfectly”. However, it’s merely the puddle’s interpretation of the hole and why it exists. The world and universe are not perfect for humans at all. Radiation, stars dying, asteroids, extreme temperatures, natural disasters that can kill millions, water- and air-borne diseases, genetic conditions, climate change, salt water covering mist of the planet, drought, flooding, inherited diseases and conditions…the list goes on. You may look at your comfortable life in 2023 and think all is well, but many people live poor or desperate lives, have poor health, suffer from a lack if clean drinking water (and die from it), and so forth. It makes more sense to think we adapted to this planet and our environment.

I respect you both for actually watching it with an open mind and giving your opinion about it. I know some people would not want to continue watching at a certain point. As a non believer myself, I do respect those who believe because most of my family are Christians and I have no right to try to take that away from them or anyone who believes. It wasn’t easy for me when I was a teenager, to start questioning about religion and the existence of God. It was a slow process that ended up taking me to decide I was not going to go back to church (for many many reasons) but formed a different perception of God. So to me God is everywhere, is Mother Nature itself, the rain, the sun, the air, the water. I created awareness and became knowledgeable and grateful for all of these things. But I do not believe in the God religion indoctrinated me to believe in. Because to me, it doesn’t exists. Also, I just can’t have a man in front of me telling me "This is the word of God" at his convenience or from his own interpretation of what he reads on that book. Which I believe it was created by men to control people. I believe we all have the answers within to overcome suffering and difficult times but that requires self awareness and that’s why Buddhism has helped me tremendously. I do not agree with Buddhism as a religion, but I take the teachings I need to be able to understand myself and get to know myself. That’s one of the problems I see with religion, it’s all about "pray and leave it to God" and how long does that last? Yes, it may make you feel better but then you fall back again and you pray again and so on. So what I say to people who believe in God and pray and struggle again and again… Do you think God did not give you all the tools for you to figure things out? The ability to solve your problems on your own? Why do you keep asking him to guide you and get you out of the struggles you’re going through? Why do you keep waiting for a sign from God? You have the answers. Look deeply within and you’ll find them.

I have always loved watching how uncomfortable this routine makes people. People generally don't much enjoy hearing their core belief system challenged... let alone be trashed. Listen to the audience reaction to THIS routine, and then compare it to the gleeful response to his other routines. The "laughter" in this is guarded, subdued, and mostly out of politeness. If you watched your own reactions while you were editing, I suspect you might have noticed that YOU two were a bit uncomfortable at times. Perfectly natural, AND very normal and common. You mentioned the obvious disdain he holds for religion. It is very similar to the disdain with which fervently religious people demonstrate toward "those heathens." One thing people hate even more than having their belief system attacked... is hearing things that make them feel even a LITTLE bit hypocritical. You have obviously heard the old rule about not talking about money, politics, or religion. There is wisdom in that. This was a very daring selection for a reaction. I applaud your 'guts.' This piece is much more applicable today with all the evangelicals who have pretty much shored up the MAGA foundation. I think his ire is more with the structure of the churches themselves. So much of the world problems can be traced to, when you get to the core, differences between religions and the rigidity toward each other. They all seem to have lost sight of who each of their Gods are and their actual teachings. I really enjoyed your discussion at the end. While my philosophy is more a loosely defined Deism, I have no problem with anybody else's foundation as long as they allow me the room to follow mine. As the old saying goes, Your right to swing your fist ends just short of the tip of my nose.

There is a problem with debating with religious people. How can you have a debate where two people have completely different understandings of what truth means. Religious people constantly talk about “Their Truth” and atheists talk about “The Truth”. You can tear down every religion with logic, point out inconsistencies, point out contradictions, point out misinterpretations, show them data, show them peer reviewed data, take them to look at fossils… it doesn’t matter… what it boils down to is very simple, after you have destroyed their reasoning they will tell you (More or Less) “I believe, because I have a personal relationship with (insert deity)”… religious people are so wired to have faith and to not need evidence, that when you show them the evidence they act like it’s not real... or the devil is testing them…

I grew up Catholic and while I still carry a strong sense of faith, moral beliefs etc. I no longer feel the need to be a part of a formal church setting. I feel like I can communicate with God no matter where I am. I don't need to confess my shortcomings to another human being. I have a direct line to the only forgiveness that matters. Formal religion has become too much of a business and it feels like faith comes second to the business. Just my feelings.

You have to think about where the idea all started. Consider all the Equinox and Solstice alignments of megalithic structures. The placement alone shows that sun worship has very early roots, as it celebrates the various degrees of the throughout the year. I would label this as Sun worship as pre-Pagan in the sense of the old religions that much of the details were lost to time.

You keep saying religion....but less than one tenth of one percent of all religions or churches or denominations are actually true to the scipture that they claim to believe in...religion is the problem not spiritual belief in the divine....man made rules and Pagan rituals masqerading as something holy...very few will ever get it...just because there is wrong doesnt mean there is no right....just because spirituality is rare...doesnt mean it does not exist...
