This brand new motorcycle just arrived in the US and we get a comprehensive overview on the features from Kawasaki District Manager, Jeff Rose. We did get some time to work with three of the 400RR models at Sonoma Raceway that day with three every different riders. We filmed one of the riders for ergonomics and settings. Fortunately, I was gifted 15 minutes on a 400RR at the end of the day so my live commentary is provided while I take a few laps! No voice over, just real time review as I am riding.

I'm in the ZX4RR club now. I've had mine for about 4 weeks now and can't get enough of it. I've been riding for over 50 years. I'm now 69 with 5 bikes now. I just love this bike and enjoy riding it around my country roads here in Kentucky. I wish there was a way to get in touch with all the ZX4RR riders around me for meet ups and rides. That would be quit a show.

Amazing video and feedback !! I am 45 years old living in northern Japan, been a car guy all my life, and one morning discovered this bike ... and it made me want a bike license. I bought the bike before even having passed the license (which is a process here in Japan, they don't give it without serious and rigorous training ! ). I've been riding my ZX4R since november last year, 5000 km through winter ! believe it or not this bike changed my life and what fun means. It is an absolute rocketship. A lot of people going to dismiss it because "400cc" . I don't care for one second, it is a blast, has speed, confort, poise and delicacy while being a hooligan if you want it to be. Being in Japan they are not restricted here, and having good gaz, it rips beyond 8k rpm ... A lot of 4R riders here even question the need for a bigger bike on the road, as you can actually USE THE REVS on this one. It is usable power, enjoyable power. I would have never, ever expected to be on a bike ever in my life, this "little machine" turned me into a riding junky, that's how good it is ! Next, racetrack when the season opens.

Hi Dave, great video as always. Brought back memories of the 90’s and racing against the little 4 cylinder screamers with v-twin 250 two strokes. Must admit, not much smells better than a cold two-stroke firing up and the power band that comes when all is at temperature. I think Americans missed out on riding both versions back then. Which if I’m correct is a shame. Learning to race a “slow” bike fast is key to your development before you move up a couple of categories. 👍😎🇦🇺

I got a 2WDW tune and Graves slip-on. Tyson Moto did a couple of videos on my bike. HP is about 74 at 14.3k. Such a huge difference with the tune removing the power limit at 11.5k. I’d say it’s mandatory for all owners. It’s that good. I took the bike to 3 track days and kept at near the front of the pack in group 200. Turn in is very easy and I had no stability issues past 135 mph on the the Ridge without chicane. Gearing is a bit tall. I don’t think I can hit redline on 6th at the track. Next up gearing, GP Suspension cartridge kit, new pads and rear sets. I was scrapping my shoe quite a bit. I may do clip-ons, but I also street ride and ergo’s are perfect for that and still feels great on the track. I agree with Dave that brakes are very striping considering this is a momentum bike still, so I’m not slamming it in even hard breaking zones. I’m going with Versah XX for a more progressive feel. Brakes can be a bit touchy when letting go after trail braking. Initial bit seems fine, but you will get fade after a few hard stops. Overall I think Kawasaki hit it out the park, Grand Slam!

What’s your lap time without the chicane?
@explodingducati1087
@explodingducati1087 Жыл бұрын
I’m not a fast rider as I mentioned that I rode in the 200 level group. The stock GPR 300 tires are acceptable on the track at best, but cannot be pushed hard. Having said that my time with chicane was 2:15. I didn’t have a timer on the first day without chicane. We’ll see what the true capacity of this bike is once some fast riders get on it. I bought this bike to help me be a better track rider which I know it will do. The best feature of the bike is the feel and screaming motor. I preferred it over the zx6R, albeit much slower. Think Mazda Miata where momentum and feel dominates the ride.

Watching this video of Sonoma Raceway makes me nostalgic for the "old course" when it was "Sears Point." The no front-straight chicane made Turn 1 a hairy proposition, even on small bikes. And then the run through the Esses into Turn 9 (none of that straight-with-a-chicane stuff) was also a test of skill through Turn 10 and then WAAAAAY down to the end of the track to Turn 11 (much higher speeds than what you were running with that shortened version) for the hardest braking point of the lap, then back up to Turn 1 (before the AFM started running their chicane which was before Start-Finish). (Yes, I am not unaware of that configuration's dangers and that some riders lost their lives because of it. But it was a screaming good time on that layout!) Also: so how much horsepower does the US model actually have? 55hp? or the full 80hp? And if it's only 55hp, is it worth the price?
@Daschickenify
@Daschickenify Жыл бұрын
56ish. Add $300 to the MSRP for a tune and bam you have the full power, or maybe more. Hell yes its worth it for how it feels. Its not a value bike, or a performance for dollar bike, but the feeling of riding it makes it worth the price.

This would be a much better choice than a ZX-6R for a first sport bike, but a Ninja 400 would probably be a better first sport bike if your body fits it. I find the N400 too cramped and wasn't interested in spending coin on clip-ons, seat, and rearsets to make it better. I ride street only and chose '22 CBR500R because ergos were perfect for a do-everything sport bike and the Showa SFF-BP fork and twin discs are excellent. I sat on a ZX-4RR and love the ergos too; do everything sport bike instead of repli-racer. If it came in a colorway other than KRT green, I'd own one (my CBR is the understated Sword Silver).

@@GripEngineering Thanks. The Honda is a parallel-twin, and I really prefer the exhaust note of a screaming inline 4 cylinder. With the ZX-4RR, it's not a high powered bike like the ZX-6R or 10R, way too much power for a new sport rider. I'm also on the short side 5'7" tall I've sat on a ninja 400 and I can flat foot so I'm pretty sure I could flatfoot on the zx4rr as the seat height is not much taller. With the ZX-4RR I can ride it in town be able to switch gears and rev out that engine without completely breaking the speed limit losing my license, like I probably would on a 6r or 10r. @@Davemcmasters "... priced where they should be". There's no reason for a 400cc 4 cylinder to be any less expensive than a 600cc 4 cylinder. There aren't fewer parts. Fewer 4RRs are being made than the 6R, so you have fewer units to spread the cost of R&D. The idea that because it's smaller displacement, it should be less expensive, is a trope.

Hi Dave, I’m a fan of your knowledge and expertise. The lack of production value and editing does a disservice to your content. I’m commenting as a customer who has paid for your content for a year. I ultimately canceled my subscription. Content structure was difficult to navigate, rough audio/video and in-concise narration made it difficult to enjoy. Voice overs, thoughtful camera placement and editing would be tremendously appreciated. 9 minute close ups of sweaty, unknowledgeable Kawasaki rep was brutal. We know how big of deal this bike could be, we’re relying on you to confirm or deny.

Hi Jason. I had just enough time to get this done as i was providing suspension support that day and i have no one to assist me at all behind the camera. While I certainly expected the negative comments as i am not professional at all, there was a lot of duress to get some information out there about the bike in a rounded manner from different perspectives. I note you leaving this channel and you disappointment in my work. Future in depth videos will not have some severe duress for time and equipment.

Over priced, under powered, what's the point? Weighs as much as a 600 with less than half the rwhp? Needs another $3k to make 75rwhp, and still will be as heavy as a 600. Looks like the bean counters got overly involved in design, rubber brake lines, steel frame, no radial master cylinder etc. Would be acceptable at maybe 7k, but I'm seeing them sell for between 11.5k and 13k. And then you still have to spend another 3k to get it where it should be, and a lot more if you want it to be anywhere close to the weight of a stock ninja 400. I will pass on this one.
