How do they compare?
When in the market for a trimmer, the choices can be overwhelming. However, if you happen to make a choice and settle on a gas trimmer, then you still have to make a choice between the 2-cyle and 4-cycle trimmer.
Both a 2-cycle and 4-cycle trimmer allows you to reach those hard-to-reach places that render your lawnmower useless. However, these two models different in various ways, and knowing these differences accelerate your decision-making.

The actual thing people want to know about the 2 types is quite commonly known knowledge about engines and how we choose them for different purposes. A 2stroke trimmer is a high rpm and lower torque, works very well at full throttle but if it catches and binds in things it will shut off or even break - for grass cutting on lawns or weak sappy shrubbery is excellent and fast. A 4stroke trimmer is a lower rpm and higher torque, works better in dense shrubbery and foliage, shouldn't stall at low throttle, has enough torque to push it's way through much harder/ denser material hence the need for heavy duty parts. Usually 4strokes should have multiple adaptors for harder works such as cutting thicker tree branches, brushing the pavement of heavy materials such as sand, tilling the soil for planting, spinning propellers for small boats etc. So, making beautiful lawns and small gardens is a 2stroke deal (if the noise code allows), but if you need to push through the jungle or till your produce garden, a 4stroke is more dependable.

One big difference I have seen between the 2 types of engines are the ease of starting them. A 4-stroke is just easier to start since you don't have to worry about having a correct fuel oil mixture and the separate phases in the motor give you better ratios for fuel and air. I don't have the vocabulary to discribe how slow of a pull and how little force I can get away with using to start up the 4-stroke lawnmower and weed eater I have.

Tried to work with a 4 Cycle trimmer, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I just need that ability of a 2 Cycle trimmer to taper off precisely when trimming delicate areas. With a 4 Cycle it was more like 100% or nothing. Having less weight for the same amount of power is also a big plus for the 2 Cycle. They are more noisy yes, but who doesn't work with ear plugs? But yeah if you don't want to mess around with carburetor adjustments, or mix fuel, or want a unit that is less noisy and consumes less fuel, the 4 Cycle is the way to go.

What kind of 4-cycle trimmer were you using? The Honda or Makita 4-cycles have predictable power throughout their rpm ranges, so I'm guessing it wasn't either of those. Your description of the "all or nothing" power band sounds like a Stihl 4Mix. Just curious. Thanks.

4 cycle trimmers are better if you're buying from a Cheap brand such as craftsman or troybilt, which makes terrible 2 stroke engines. The higher end 2 strokes are better, but a homeowner may have good luck with a cheaper 4 cycle

With lower quality engines, 4 cycles are more stable and more powerful then the other cheap options. But higher end brands make much more powerful and useful 2 cycle engines.

Hello, is a 4 cycle trimmer better for tall weed places? Is it stronger and able to cut the grass efficiently? More durable? I mow my sister's lawn with a two cycle trimmer and I have broken the cable that makes the trimmer head spin. Should I buy a 4 cycle trimmer instead believing that it is more stronger and durable

There's a newer type of 4-stroke where there is no separate oil system and it uses mixed gas. The example I just encountered is the Stihl FS-131

I’ve used both and 2 cycle for me…when a 4 cycle acts up it’s too advanced for me to quickly repair on the go..my 4 cylcle is collecting dust.. even repair man said it’s not worth foxing if it isn’t a maintenance repair

2-stroke is just as durable as a 4-stroke, if not more so. Only three moving parts in the engine means there's not much that can break. I've had the same 2-stroke trimmer for over 15 years. Never had any issues.

4 stroke trimmerd are okay, just make sure you change the engine oil after every use to extend its life. It’s not much, it’s like 6 ounces of oil that it requires.

@@shadowthehedgehog4737 Wrong assumptions. Stihl 4-stroke Trimmer/Brushcutters including the FS 91/ 91 R, FS 111 series, FS 131/ 131 R, BR 500/600/700, and BR 800X CAN turn on their sides since they do NOT have a sump and require 50:1 mixture of gas + oil mixture to operate.

The 4 stroke trimmers have the option to start them with a drill because they have very little compression when pulling the rope. This could be good for some people but me myself I'm not walking my 4 acre property with a drill in my back pocket. I mean If you have to use a battery powered drill to start your 4 stroke you should just get an electric trimmer.

@@TielSong0509 late reply, but that shouldn't have permanently killed it. Check and clean the spark plug, prime with fresh fuel, and use a little starter spray if needed - should clear it out.

If your not going to take care of your stuff: 2 stroke. Get a 2 stroke. There are four weed wackers at my grandparents. Two of them 2 stroke, the other 4. All of them had ZERO maintenance, but the two stroke ones atleast _ran_ when spraying stuff into the carburetor. The 4 strokes have "fuck all" worth of compression.

2 cycle engines do not have more power. They’re faster, fast doesn’t equal power. 2 cycle has RPMs but 4 cycle has more torque. Saying a 2 cycle has more power is like saying a Lamborghini has more power than a semi truck.

2 cycle makes power per revolution of the crank. A 4 cycle makes power every 2 revolutions of the crank.

Fast is literally the definition of power. One horsepower is equal to 550ft lbs/sec. If you move faster, you are producing more power.

The 2 stroke can spin faster and higher rpm. Just like dirt bikes think of power bands. 2 strokes were very peppy if you kept them wound up in the higher rpm’s. But the down low power wasn’t there. That’s where the 4 stroke shines. It’s gonna have more torque than the 2 stroke.
