I'm a Scot who moved to the West Country for a long time, after all of your beautiful travels around Japan it was a little surreal to see Taunton out the window on one of your videos, and to hear the familiar whirring of the machine printing your ticket or the GWR recorded announcements that I could recite in my sleep. I was excited to see what you thought of Penzance and Cornwall! If you are ever back in the area I reccomend some of the walking routes and villages to the west, around the Land's End peninsula. After vicariously enjoying the various regional station bentos and local food from around japan I was sorry to see you having to subsist on what looked like whsmith biscuits, but I'm glad you got to have some of the good porridge as well!

Hi Kuga, I've also done London to Penzance, in 1982 I'd go there with my bicycle and gear ,I rode from Lands end to John OGroats in Scotland for charity, Multiple Sclerosis, went the long way through the lake district and Scottish Highlands, ended up doing 1100 miles in 12 days, it's a scenic rail trip when near the sea, you go past Stone Henge, cheers and good luck 😊

Always love a bronze statue (like the Paddington Bear one at 3:10 ) - you can always see what parts people touch most, in this case the top and sides of his had, and most particularly his nose/muzzle. On some older statues, this is done for good luck, and I like to think it is so with Paddington too.

I was on this about 6 weeks ago. An advantage the Caledonian Sleeper has is a toilet within the compartment. On the Night Riviera I didn't like having to leave the compartment several times in the night in my PJs to go to the loo at the end of the carriage! (hey, I'm of a certain age!). Also, the compartment is TINY; the bed is VERY narrow. Breakfast is a choice of porridge or a pastry (I can't have the latter; good job I like porridge). But my father was a railway guard, and trains are in my blood. But the overnight sleepers are NOT as romantic as you think they're going to be. But they do the job, and I'm glad we took the train down.

My wife and I took this train to Penzance in 2011, sleeping bunk-bed style in the one compartment. As a fat man, the bed was a little narrow for me, but it was still far better than a seat or driving, and worth the money. We stayed two nights in Penzance, before taking the train to stay in other Cornish and Devon towns (Truro, St Austell, Exeter) before going home.

There's not a lot of point any more. Trains are fast enough to get across this little island in a day, so making the most of a night isn't worth it for most journeys. I do understand, though; there is a certain romanticism to sleeper trains that makes travelling all the more fun. 😊

I've done this trip several times in the 80's. It's had a refurbishment, definitely needed. Like sleepers everywhere, they're designed to get you somewhere early in the morning. The only time views could be discerned was once, on November 5, Guy Fawkes night when fireworks punctured the journey! As i recall the train takes a special slow southern route, past Bournemouth? to accommodate sleepers. Kuga you make the poor food almost palatable! Thanks.

Hope you enjoyed the scenery on your return journey - I never get tired of the views, no matter how many times I've travelled in Devon and Cornwall by train. The original GWR was nicknamed God's Wonderful Railway, and I suspect the landscape had a lot to do with that!

Thank you , i live in London and i have thought about doing this , but I feel that the best time to do it is end of June, as the sunrise is at 4am., so the plan would be to go to sleep immediately after boarding, then get up for the sunrise, sleep a bit more, and definitely get up around 6am to enjoy Cornwall's views. Very informative video, thank you. By the way, I have been to Japan several times and I tried to get tickets for the Sunrise Izumo but they were all sold out (as usually happens) , because you can't book from abroad so I could only try to get the tickets once I was already in Japan.

It is a fabulous train. However, I personally prefer to take a daytime train which has a restaurant. You can then spend a couple of hours enjoying a good (but a little expensive) three-courses meal while the countryside rushes past. The food is actually cooked on the train so it is always very good quality. There are several restaurant trains and you have to check the timetable - not all of them have it.

It travels at a specially reduced speed to ensure a smooth sleep, and also so that you don't arrive too early before you've had a good sleep. Day-time trains travel as much as double the speed (certainly on certain sections).
