Kuga-san, thank you for this review! My wife and I live in Hannover, Germany, and very often spend our vacation in Austria. The Nightjet is a good option, but it is still very expensive compared to daytime-fast trains. Ideal for business-people who are afraid of flying, and who do not have to care too much about the cost of travelling. Concerning punctuallity of train travel in Germany, that's another story 😂 A delay on most long distance trains is normal. At least, if your train is delayed by at least one hour you are eligible for a refund of 25 %, and from two hours on, you will get a refund of 50 %. If your ticket was issued by the Deutsche Bahn in Germany. Even if a part of your journey includes neighbor countries. But your journey has to start and end in Germany.

Funny to see locations I visited several times each year from you! The 30-minute early departure: you probably bought your ticket over a month in advance, because Austrian Railways was forced to introduce a special schedule during trackworks on its mainline to Linz after lots of delays. But you were lucky, because in the autumn, it got worse, much worse: due to floods damaging both the old and the new double-track line east of Vienna.

This year was quite challenging for the ÖBB. Constructions in Germany and France caused many delays this summer, so the ÖBB already reduced the number of nightjets, but unexpected nature disasters in Austria made it extra hard for them to avoid delays. But i am still very sorry for your experience, and hope that you could enjoy the trip, once the journey began.

Every time I have taken Amtrak here in the U.S., it has always been hours late to destinations. My last trip, the train was due to arrive at 4:30 a.m. but got there at almost 7 a.m. I had to wait in my car because the inside station never opened. If you use Amtrak, you just know it’ll be late either before you board or while you’re on the train. I still enjoy the train if I am not on a schedule that doesn’t allow possible hours of delays.

I loved this trip and nice talks with the other 3 travellers. But one thing was bad: the bed was so "un-soft" to lay on 😢. Or maybe it's because i'm already 66 years old? That's a perfect room on a Sleeper train . OBB and the Night Jet are making the way . Looks like Sleeper trains are back to Europe and I think that's a very good thing . Next step will be to have high speed Sleeper trains . It's possible ... Ask China ... 🙂
@hfb_blaacc25912 ай бұрын
There is barely a need for high speed night travels on rails here. If you increase the speed much further, you wouldn't even have enough time for a decent amount of sleep, granted the shorter distances we are dealing with in europe. Apart from that, the Nightjet is capable of running 210 km/h, but is barely ever able to make use of the maximum speed due to the track speed limits and trafffic.

By the way Mozart got kicked out of Salzburg with a kick in his ass, and I mean "actually" with an actual kick in his ass executed by Count Arco a member of the court household of the ruling Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg Leopold von Colloredo who ordered Count Arco to give Mozart a kick in his ass on his way out...and back in those days the shoes of a noble man were very pointy at the front end, so it definitively hurted a lot.

I once went on a night train from Budapest to Munich, which was run by OBB, since The Deutsche Bahn do not provide night service anymore and the train was quite old stock, so the trash container was underneath the window in the compartment and in front of my face in the bed. I found the idea quite disgusting, being so close to the bin with my face and possibly smelling what is or has been inside. Hope you had a good trip. The ÖBB is notorious for delays and it's extremely expensive. I rarely ever take the train and I haven't been on a single ÖBB journey that wasn't off schedule. For that type of service, I cannot believe they have the audacity to charge €549 to Germany 😰! You were also lucky you went in August because in September there was a series of severe flooding which damaged the tracks between Vienna and Munich and the rail system was utter chaos for months. Most Austrians never take sleeper trains as their preferred form of transport just because of the price. It costs many times more to take the train than to fly. After flying, driving is most popular amongst Austrians. People don't bat an eyelid at driving 8-10hrs from Austria to Germany, Italy or Croatia.
