A view from the UK. Don't forget viewers if you bounce flash off anything - walls or ceilings for example - check its colour. If you bounce off a coloured surface you will get that colour as a cast into your photo. It's like using coloured floodlights.

The direct on flash was producing specular highlights, and more objectionably, distorting her natural skin color. Bounce flash was much more pleasing without either of these drawbacks.

how do I do exposure compensation using manual flash with universal hot shoe?

You can't. If you use exposure compensation (meaning you use auto exposure) with a manual flash, your image will be too bright because the camera can not account for the flash. Use manual exposure and experiment with different exposures and flash power. I made some very satisfying wedding shots with a manual flash & manual exposure.

Incomplete & confusing tutorial for me. When you are using Aperture priority, assuming that you are using auto iso, so negative exposure compensation will work. But u set your iso 400 and use -1 stop exposure compensation and then use on camera flash in TTL mode. Pls explain.

@@BeyondPhotography u were using Aperture priority as mentioned at 3:51sec. And exposure compensation will not work if something ( here sutter speed or ISO ) is not in auto mode.
