17:18, in finding the main bar spacing you should only subtract one diameter of the main bars not three , the final answer 4.75 is correct though. Best,

@17:48 main bar spacing calculates to 4.000" not 4.75 .. Unless you add the half bar to both sides to get the center to center spacing. The formula you wrote is correct. the calc is wrong. Thanks for the videos however.

Rey Carl yes. however some additional elements may be designed for supporting it along its length. also check design of circular column.

a simple question, why everything your dividing it by 8 (in tie spacing)?

consider dia of bar as #3. this mean the bar dia is 3/8 inches. one inch does have 8 soter and when i am talking about #3 it means dia is 3 soter or 3/8 inches............. or you can say to convert soters into inches we divide soters by 8....

thank for your fast reply, but what is a soter? i searched for it on google and it has nothing with inches it means according to google that its a greek epithet, to be honest wt i understood tht its a kind of conversion of units .plz can you clarify it more .... thank u in advance

jojo ... soter is just local word used in asian countries by masons ..... you can call it (1/8)''= 1 soter

Hello, nice videos. when you solved for Ag, you used 442k, but wrote phi*442, shouldnt the left side of the equation have 0.65*442, and Ag = 100in ^2?

Joseph Perez hi. nice question. phi with 442k is a factor. if you see little above when i am calculating pu i have used some factors like 1.2 and 1.6 with D.L and L.L . thats why i do not need to put the value of phi with 422k.

Thank you for the response. So the LRFD factors account for that. I checked the design strength and it did work: phi* Pn = 550K > 442K

Great video sir. very clear. I assume 175 kip must refers to a live load for a heavy structure such as a bridge. For residential structure I used 3 Kn/m2 => 0.06 kip / ft2. So, live load for 144 ft2 for second floor slab= 0.06 x 144 = 8.64 kips only. Is this realistic?

I would like to know which factor loads, moments and axial loads to choose if I want to calculate the reinforcements manually? In a shear wall, how to decide the boundary zones and their reinforcements? How to design a dual-system structure by hand? thank you so much for your repy.
