There is a trend happening recently in India, there are many startup being born specifically to produce e-Scooters/bikes to serve b2c and b2b as well and they are most eager to partner with these quick delivery services and in return they have gathered their attention quite well and in the very near future we can hope to see more delivery happening through EVs in India.

Most delivery services have their own mini warehouses near the residential locality, like a actual grocery shop. But of you go there to buy they tell you to first order online, then give the stuff to you.

They use EV scooters in Delhi. Atleast when the delivery is close to the shop then 700-800$ ev scooters are used. Sometimes they make multiple deliveries but mostly they’re linked to nearest store registered with them so majority is one delivery at a time. The store owners kinda get their own delivery guys or their own relatives in this creating a mode of earning.

They do not go around and do shopping for you. They basically maintain super stores containing items which they think will be sold . Once They recieve an order They pack it and dispatch it within 2 mins. This does considerably reduce carbon footprint. Zepto now blinking is better then their competition

Even you, my friend, can go create a unicorn if you raise $100m from investors and have a 2 million+ user base. I’m a business analyst so I know what I’m talking about, only 15 unicorns in india are operating profitably, the others are abysmally cash burning, the bubble will soon burst. Let’s be honest, you don’t need to be an analyst like me to understand this, just think logically - they ought to set up dark stores in the vicinity of every major suburb in Bengaluru, for example and store tons and tons of perishables only to give it you in 10 minutes, expending on delivery personnel and for free? The average order value is 100rs and their expenditure is 350rs, the only hope for them would be to get the average order value upto 400rs to make some profit but I doubt that would happen - most people only need petty stuff in 10 minutes - who in their right mind, would order their groceries for the whole month from ZEPTO? You must be really naïve to hope that they can turn profitable, at the slightest.

Hey Jaby, The pollution concern due to delivery is mitigated using electric vehicles. I saw 90% of EVs used at Zepto hub near my home(Hyderabad city)

Most of the Zepto guys I saw used EVs like E-bikes and E-scooters or sometimes even bicycles to deliver the goods. The local stores usually store goods that will be sold quickly. So once the stores receive order, they pack it and dispatch it immediately. The order allotment will be based on the user location. The order will go to the nearest stores to users location if they are partnered with zepto and the local delivery guy for the area where user is located will collect the order and deliver it to the customers. I think companies are providing loans and subsidies to buy EVs for delivery guys.

Zepto uses electric scooters for my neighbourhood and it perfectly works for them due to very short distances of 2 kms and so. A typical Indian e scooter gives 60 kms per charge. So each vehicle can do at least 15 deliveries before it needs to be put on charge again. Very clever!

Well practically if they have set up each dark shop in a way that the delivery distance is a maximum of 2kms, the drivers delivering groceries cannot pile up orders in such a small geographical location. Otherwise it will take at least a couple of hours for delivery if they wait for multiple orders. Even in cases of other platforms the distance between two customers is likely to be more than a kilometer. So they are using up that gas anyway.

These are tiny grocery/convenience stores that are scattered around and take on an average about 15 minutes (walking) from your house. You'll find at least one, regardless of where you live. These are no big marketplaces, but they are tiny unorganised shops with reasonable groceries stocks that mostly cater to one specific neighborhood only. So knowing that, if I want to order some groceries online, I would expect it to arrive around the time it would take for me to go and get the same number of stuff from that kirana store (max 20 mins). Increasing the delivery window in the west makes sense as the convenience stores generally do not sell too many groceries and to get most of them you probably will have to travel to supermarkets which would take at least an hour or two to checkout, while doing the same here will not work at all here.

The same situation like the west will happen in India as well. The KIrana Stores are dying slowly. Someday there will be just a few super markets left far from each other and the convenience stores will only stock products that have a longer shelf life as consumers won't be visiting them much. Before, money used to flow among more number of people (more stores and less online marketplaces) but now it just goes straight to a few big names of India. Soon these big businesses that are offering deep discounts with investor money will start charging higher pricres and people will have no option but to pay without even knowing because of the MRP tag.

Regarding the pollution aspect that you mentioned, me living in Noida almost daily orders my groceries from Blinkit or Zepto. From what I have observed, they do individual orders but then about 85%-95% of the delivery has been made using E-bikes or scooters(Atleast those that have come to deliver in my area or locality)
