I love Borax! It's the main ingredient in Oxy clean. Washing soda softens the water to help your soap clean better and borax helps whiten and removes odor.

I have never successfully gotten the powder to dissolve in our well water, so I mix the powder in a 5 gallon bucket with hot water and it forms a gel. That works great for us. I have a tiny (we call it a "Barbie size") portable washing machine so just 1/4 cup of the gel will do a load of laundry in that. It definitely saves money!

People can make their own washing soda, get baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), I get mine at the feed mill 50lb. bag. Put an half inch layer on a cookie sheet and put it in a 400 degree F. oven for one hour. You have washing soda. The recipe that I use is half a cup of washing soda, half a cup of borax, and half a cup of blue dawn dish detergent, dissolve washing soda and borax in four cups of hot water then add dish washing liquid, then add eight more cups of water, and you are done. No soap to grate. You use 1\4 cup per load of laundry and you can use it on HE washing machines.

Zote is a softer soap. You can cut the bar into smaller pieces and leave it out overnight to "dry out". This also works if you grate the soap first. If you use a food processor or blender make sure you add 1/2 cup of the washing soda so the soap doesn't stick to the blades. Hope this helps!

All of the Zote soap colors (white, blue & pink) have citronella fragrance oil in them. That's probably the lemony smell you're referring to. You may want to use castile bar soap (Kirk's or Dr. Bronner's) as they have a softer scent. Hope this helps!

Just a tip, Zote flakes can be frugally made at home if you don't mind a little extra work and some time. Take a bar of Zote, grate it with a cheese grater (you can even use the side that will make the widest shavings), place the shavings on a baking sheet or large dish (be sure to label it as soap because it will look like shaved coconut), and let it dry out at room temp for 3 days or so. You'll know it's dry when it easily crumbles in your hands and it will have a crisp sound. Place the flakes in a baggie or mason jar (be sure to clearly label and keep out of children's reach) and that's it!

I am coming into this a little late but wanted to ask a question. I use to make and use both the liquid and dry soap for a few years but found that it made my colors dingy and my whites grey. I used vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda and hanging clothes in the sun to brighten everything to no avail. I had to bleach the whites regularly to keep them white and I was trying to get away from using a lot of chemicals. Anybody have other ideas to try. I would love to go back to using my own soap. You also mentioned something about borax and I am curious about that as I used it in my soaps. I guess I will have to look that up because I have never heard anything about it being a problem. Thanks

Sondra, did you try putting 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide in the bleach compartment? It has natural bleaching properties. If washing soda is in your laundry soap, the chemical reaction with hydrogen peroxide results in oxygen cleaner (think oxiclean). Hope this helps!
@sondrajackson31717 жыл бұрын
Hi Pamela, I did try it but it didn't make that much difference. I am using store bought detergent for now but I keep all the ingredients to make my own if ever the need arises. I might try again at some point after I do some more researching on how fix the problems I'm having. Maybe more peroxide is needed? Anyhow, thanks for your suggestion. :)
