Here's my summary- 4 cups water 1.5 bars castile soap Boil water and dissolve grated soap into it on a pot on the stove 20 litres water 1 cup borax 1 cup washing soda Half fill 20l bucket with hot water. Add borax, washing soda, and soap water and mix. Fill bucket with hot water and seal with lid. Leave overnight. Stir before using. 1/2 cup per washing load.

Thanks for sharing! FYI. You can make your own washing soda. Spread baking soda on a shallow sided cooking sheet. Place in a 200° oven, stirring occasionally. When it turns gray, it will have converted to washing soda. I like to buy baking soda in bulk, at Costco to save even more money. I hope this helps.

Be aware that lavender is an endochrine disruptor if used often or in moderately high doses. Soy is a common one that's more intense. But just to be wary. You can see if what you use has that issue, and if you are using phatalates and it helps too. Personally Borax was too toxic to keep in my home, I did use it for pest control for a while but now I use peppermint to ward off pests mostly. And Diatomaceous Earth. But for laundry vinegar can be all you need...even for really smelly stuff. Personally I do use essential oils like rose and chamomile, or orange for our laundry. Sometimes even peppermint and other oils that are used to ward off mosquitoes and such into clothing we wear hiking. 😊

​@@ari3lz3ppThey did a retest on the lavender in glass as opposed to the plastic container they used in the test resulting in endocrine changes in the subjects. It was discovered that it was, in fact the microplastics causing the changes, not the lavender. Also, borax is not toxic. The reason it works as pest control is it is abrasive, like shards of glass to insects. A small amount will cut them and cause injuries, and it will stick to them, and proceed to leave a trail wherever they go, including their nests, thus eradicating the entire infestation without toxic chemicals. Borax is safe for children and pets.

I have a hilarious story about line drying our clothes in the mid 60s… My mom was in nursing school and lived 150 miles away and my siblings lived in a foster care, people from our church… my dad was a scoundrel and he theived and gambled so we were incredibly poor and my mom came home on weekends to spend time with us and my sisters. I was 14 and left to fend for myself during the week.. no phone no tv no radio so life was very hard for me. I've been making my homemade liquid laundry soap using the same recipe for over 20 years now. While I love the lemon balm, I have a huge surplus of chocolate mint growing this year....so my next few batches will be AMAZING! Prior to leaving my farm, I found that this recipe would not only remove grease, blood and manure, but it was SO GOOD at cleaning our clothing and barn towels of animal amniotic fluid, which any farm wife will tell you is darn near impossible.

I love seeing young people learn to make things instead of depending on stores; especially nowadays. As a child we made lye soap and it was used for everything from laundry, dishes and baths. When I started making my own laundry detergent, I used the standard recipe; fels naphtha, washing soda and borax. Then I learned borax was degrading my elastic and started keeping that out and only adding it to heavy soiled loads. Then I went to Ivory soap instead of fels naphtha. Then I started using my homemade soap scraps instead of buying Ivory. Life is a live and learn process.

@@fireflysparks1105 Grate finely a bar of soap like Ivory or castile in a large pan. Add 12 cups water and let it cook on medium-low heat, stirring often until the soap dissolves. Add 1 cup washing soda and stir until it dissolves. Remove the pan from the heat and add 26 cups more water. Stir. At this point I pour It into a big bucket with a lid. I Stir it ever hour or so until it cools. It has a slippery feel to the hand and doesn't suds much, but modern machines don't like suds anyway. Stir before dipping 1/2 cup per load. I keep borax powder in a separate container for difficult loads, because over time it deteriorates elastic, but so does bleach.

I use white vinager as a fabric softener. My towels are so much softer and fluffier. I never get uti's anymore, and I feel healthier overall as it rinses any soaps and chemicals out of the laundry. The key with lemon balm is not to touch the leaves. Same with mint, take it gently by the stalk with scissors mid way between leaves, the hormones in the plant will concentrate at each leaf stalk joint with main stem & throw new shoots. Very easy, but remember, DONT touch the leaf, the oils / terpenes are mainly surface mounted.

In my country, I am from the Czech Republic, we would never use a plastic spoon for stirring whatever that is boiling. Plastic spoons are highly toxic and release toxic stuff into whatever use stir. We use only wooden spoons. Same accounts for using plastic forms for baking. We would just never use it. Whatever consists aluminium is also not healthy for your body. So we cook and bake with wooden or iron material. :-) I noticed a lot of Americans don't care, which I just cannot understand.

Thank you for using cloth diapers and breast feeding your baby. None of the young mothers I know do that anymore. For them, cloth diapers are to much trouble. However, it saves over $2,500.00-3,000.00 per child not to mention quickly filling the landfills. It takes over 50+ years for disposable diapers to break down (if ever). I also made my own detergent for several years because I lived in the country, besides the $12.00-$15.00 for a large bottle of detergent, you also have to add the cost of gas to go get it. One box of Borax and one box of washing soda isn't over $8.00 the bar soap is about $2.00. I believe it lasted me over four years. A five gallon bucket takes forever to use up. I wish more young people cared about the planet we leave to future generations. I'm sure you already know the advantages for children who are breast fed. You are doing everything right!

I used to do dirty jobs and got my clothes heavily greased up. I'd recommend washing his clothes with dawn dishaoap first. Depending on how soiled they are, you may need to run it through again. Once all oil/grease are gone, you can wash it again (if you want) mixed in with the rest of the regular dirty clothes for it to smell fresh.

Note: I found out this week to be careful with Castile soap in HE washers, that it may be bad for them?? My friend said to use Sals soap instead or the Dawn dish soap. I’m doing more research as I do not want to ruin my washing machine. Have fun making your detergent though, it’s fun trying new things.

I got Covid in April 2022 and I am still dealing with a lot of after effects of long Covid and it’s July 2023. Just made this laundry soap but used pink zote soap since already had it. As I was melting my soap shavings in the water, I noticed it was going to take awhile and I wanted to get it done, so I used my immersion blender and oh my, how quickly it mixed up. So I got it made more quickly by doing that one trick. But do let it melt and get soft before using the immersion blender.

I do too. I use my recipe my 80/20 bar. 80% of olive oil and 20% of palm kernel oil flakes. The palm kernel flakes gives the soap more lather but mor important is they harden the bar quicker. Of course, making your own soap allows you to add the scent (essential oils).

There were, and probably still are a ton of intricate costumes. However the balls not the same as it once was. There is a lot of weirdness and politics in there that don't belong in the setting so we all gave that up a long time ago. But thank you.

I m Tolkien fan and read bits and pieces of classics of fantasy and SF and I love SF and fantasy movies to this day (not gamer though) and I used to go on SF and fantasy conventions for years. I always felt such belonging there, it was my tribe :) But in recent years visiting such conventions tired me and saddened me as I've seen so many indoctrinated kids with rainbow flags :( They invaded and taken our playground. :(

I enjoyed the video, thank you. An option for challenged viewers might be to use one and two gallon buckets that have lids. They're available at home centers, hardware stores and paint stores. Less weight to handle, smaller container(s), etc. If an elder finds this impractical, perhaps someone more ffit could brew up a 5 gallon batch and gift it to their loved one(s) with physical issues that are still somewhat independent. 🤔

I haven't used this exact recipe but I enjoy seeing how others make laundry detergent. I use the liquid Dr bronners Castile soap because it's easier & less time consuming than hand grating it. I use about 1 cup of soap for 16c of water. I don't know how many loads o got but it lasted me 3 months. I need to find a 5gallon bucket to make it this time around and then store it in jars in the laundry room.

i had the same idea. but Lisa Bronner says to use 1/3 cup of liquid castile soap per load. which would be a lot more expensive than nearly any other product/method. she says she uses 2 TBS of her Sal Suds instead of the castile soap because it’s better at cleaning. so that is likely the better, more affordable, route to take. she adds 1/2 cup baking soda to the 2 TBS Sal Suds for extra cleaning power when needed (like musty towels).

Love your tutorial - and the suggestion to use lemon balm for an infusion! It's a great daily use herb, with so many good properties. I've been using borax dissolved in hot water for most loads, as it's antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial And - great reminder that diapers from nursing babies clean so easily. Line drying when we can is the best! (Reminds me of hanging out clothes with my mom)

@@debpratt52 Lol, that's why I said to recycle one from a neighbor. It's a recycled bottle, vs a recycled mayonnaise jar. Personal preference. For example, my arthritic hands respond better to pushing a button than twisting off a lid. I also have gripping problems and would likely drop the mayo jar and spill the detergent. It's so interesting how different our needs can be isn't it? ❤️

That’s why you’re only supposed to use a few drops. And they are actually good for you. Especially eucalyptus and tea tree in washing. Both are really good as antibacterial and anti fungals. Keeps things like times at bay and great for washing sports gear. So yeah, use them, but be sparing about it.

You can make washing soda by baking baking soda! I use 'soap works' glycerin soap which does gel so I use way less water and only put 2tbsp detergent in the machine. I usually put a few drops of tea tree oil but I'm going to try your great tip to use fresh herbs! Thanks!!

Washing soda is also a sanitizer used at a couple of heaped dessert spoonfuls per load. So for diapers just add extra per load to soften hard water, prevent limescale deposits plus clean & sanitize your laundry and machine.

I use Kirk’s for handmade laundry soap, as well; however, since I do laundry by hand, I just grate Kirk’s Castile soap directly to hot water in the wash tub along with the washing soda, and a wee bit of vinegar when it’s the dog diapers (I run a senior/hospice dog sanctuary). Wow. I use the same 3 ingredients but 2 cups of each to make 2 gallons. It says to use 1/4 a cup but I’ve always been paranoid that the clothes wouldn’t be clean so I use about a cup. But it still is way cheaper than store bought. I’ve always thought about adding more water to thin it out since this makes a thicker gel like consistency. I’m gonna try that. I love the Lemon Balm idea. Ironically I just bought one a few weeks ago & it is growing wonderfully. Yay.

Lemon balm is really good for making burn oinment, too. My family cooks nearly every meal we eat and burns happen. But I have seen nothing work as well as lemon balm infused in olive oil and then mixed in coconut oil for preventing blistering and providing pain relief.

I make mine using Zote, which smells great. I also put 2 cups of each versus 1 because of the amount of water used. This is the way ive been making mine for about 12 years now. I love it and it dies do a good job of getting clothes clean. I also make a powdered version using a whole box of each and 3 bars of Zote which are pretty big. It take less than 1/4 cup per large load of the powdered version.

@heathermelton5688 Since Zote bars are so big, I only use one bar per 5 gallon mix. But I also use a whole box of Borax & a whole box of the Super Washing Soda. Putting less just means it's really watered down. I have an older extra large capacity washer and use 1/4 cup for a full load of laundry. I also use fill my softener slot with vinegar instead of using fabric softener. It doesn't smell once you're done and it gets rid of the musty smell towels can get.

Then I'll shake it and try to boil it but it doesn't mix anymore. I also grated it finely with a cheese grater before making as well. I find they both also leave a white residue on clothes that hard to get off even though I use smaller portions of the soap. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I have used this recipe but with the zote soap. The zote soap gells the solution really bad, and diluting it to 10 gallons helped with workability. 10 gallons takes up a lot of space. I have since gone to a method of having the zote soap grated in a jar. I measure out a small amount of grated zote soap, a small amount of borax, and a small amount of washing soda or baking soda. This takes up a lot less space because I just have those ingredients on hand anyway. And no prep, just some measurements! Love the video, thanks for sharing!

Awesome! I typically do a powder laundry soap with the same concept- my top loader does fine with it- but I’m sure if you have a front loader or HE machine- liquid is ideal. I use my food processor to grade the soap (washing it really well) and just add borax and washing soda. The lemon balm sounds like a lovely addition.

I do have a front loader but I would love to switch to a big top loader! If I ever do I’ll have to try that powder recipe!

Yeah I'm debating if I wanna do powder or this, I do like liquid soap so much better. I'm just not sure where I'd store all the liquid lol. What's your recipe for the powder?

​@@pinschrunner I make power, I also make my own soap with coconut oil, but you don't have to. So I do 2 parts soda ash or washing soda 2 parts backing soda 2 parts salt ( any salt) 1 part borax 1 part soap Mix add essential oils if you want... That's it

I just bought everything to make this today. I have very sensitive skin and even the expensive "non toxic" and scent free detergents bug me over time. I bought a castile bar soap that I know is good with my skin. I am lowkey excited.

Glad you posted this. I've been making my own for over a decade. But instead of a bar of laundry soap, I put in dr bronners liquid Castille soap. It mixed better.. it's so easy to make your own. Cheaper and less chemicals 😊

Thank you for your reply but I think I figured it out. My Castile bar weighs 4 ounces so google says 4 ounces is 8 tablespoons which would be for the full 5 gallon recipe.
