JP does their 1 piece ring different than the old school McFarland ring that was sold by armalite 2.0. The do a grinding operation on it to set the od. The old McFarland ring had a ton of tension to the point of not functioning. Not saying it's better or worse than the original 3 ring design, just saying it's different than the old McFarland ring. A lot of JP guns and bolts are run with hot handloads in matches with longer range stages. Ohhh, this is an interesting aside. Jim Sullivan has a patent pending on a 2 piece zero gap gas ring for the AR. It is part of a huge patent which includes stuff like a quick change barrel system and a lot of cooling ideas for the gas tube. The whole concept is to make the AR into a SAW with the surefire mags that he patented so a SAW would be a walking machine gun and not crew fed. Search Armwest LLC and Leroy James Sullivan on google patents and you will find it. Inrange TV has some interviews with Jim about some of his concepts he was or still is developing.

Have you seen a broken Aero Precision nitride bolt or are then generally reliable?
@jonathonschram3429
@jonathonschram3429 4 жыл бұрын
A guy had one break at a local 3 gun shoot. He's a handloader, and he was running a pretty hot load when he attended our long range course...so there's a chance he ran some heavy loads through his 3-gun rifle as well at some point. We broke one running full auto 300 blk suppressed as well. Odds are pretty good if you've seen a broken bolt, that it was an aero or psa. Not because their bad per-se...just the sheer volume of them that are out there in the wild. If 1 in 10,000 break under 20k rounds...you are still going to see more problems at the range than Gucci brand X that grenade 1 in 100 under 20k rounds. I've worked at a range long enough that I've seen just about everything go down at some point. I just remind myself when a glock, sig, or m&p go down that I see hundreds of them work flawlessly in class. Just because that 1 Hudson survived a high round count class doesn't mean it's more reliable necessarily...

FYI, The bolts are NOT HPT/MPI nor are they shot peened. So these are not for duty use, only competitions. I find for a BCG of nearly 400 usd that they should do much better than nitriding the carrier and dlc for the bolt . NP3 or hard chrome would be much better . The bolts are reasonably priced but 250 bucs for a ho-hum carrier is outrageous.

Found you recently and love the details. One thing I find lacking in these physicals is the actual measurements of the bolts themselves in order to determine the sealing properties of the bolt system. I understand you sort of measure the tail of the bolt with gauges which we don't know the size of, and you measure the bolt body at the front, but I find this to be less extensive to the entire bore of the carrier as it lacks reference. Recommendation: For ease of understanding for the regular watcher, make additional corresponding gauges to match your bore gauges, including the color coded system. This will quickly tell which areas match and which don't. On a side note, I find poor sealing to cause excessive build up over the firing pin and/or the head of the bolt, indicating this issue with the BCG. Was wondering if there is an easy way of addressing this, short of drilling larger vent holes on the carrier. Thanks!
