I’m a Sabahan, and I do agree that food in West Malaysia has more variety and flavours 😁 Sabah also has a large population of mixed native + Chinese (Hakka mainly) = Sino mixed race, hence the unique blend of Chinese + native foods. Sabah is actually more well known for its seafood variety.
@gerardfernon33392 жыл бұрын
Kendra, the meal they had later at the resort looked to me like it had a native influence, especially the vegetables and soup. It didn't look much like Chinese food to me. I think Ivana and Steve were eating the genuine article there. A penny for your thoughts?
@kendra112 жыл бұрын
@@gerardfernon3339 Yes, the vegetable & soup dishes are more traditional & used a lot of local veggies. FYI, Sabahans love light soups like this, for almost every main dish, we must have soups as a side 😁
@gerardfernon33392 жыл бұрын
@@kendra11 Good stuff, Kendra. Thank you. I know about Sabah's "sup kosong" which everyone expects will be served with their meals in the locals' coffee shops. It's not much more than hot water, daun sup and probably ajinomoto, is it? But Sabahans simply must have it brought to them. The Sabahans even try their hardest to get it from Malay coffee shops and stalls in the peninsula here and they often do succeed.
@kendra112 жыл бұрын
@@gerardfernon3339 Yes, you’re right, sup kosong! 😂👍🏻 I’m a Sino-Dusun, one of our dishes here is the traditional sup lihing (soup cooked with local rice wine, usually mixed with chicken meat & ginger & other local veggies).

food cooked by Kadazan-Dusun-Murut tribe in Sabah is usually close to how Chinese cooking is (I guess it is because how most the restaurant earlier on was run by the Chinese and we were influenced by the taste and way of cooking), but the seasoning used and the cooking style are much simpler. I remember growing up, most of our foods were only seasoned with salt & MSG before all the other seasoning came in.

Yes I notice that there is less food sampling in Sabah compared to your videos in Peninsular. I'm sure there are lot more that Sabah can offer like the recent Pesta Kaamatan. But when in Sarawak, don't miss out the unique taste of traditional cuisine e.g. Chicken/Fish pansoh (cooked in bamboo), Kasam, Midin Belacan, Umai, Sup Terung Asam etc. You can try smokehouse in Kuching e.g. Rumah Asap Tabuan Dayak or Langkau Arau Rumah Asap Dayak or even the well-known Lepau Restaurant. If you are looking for some level of spiciness & wicked sambal, Malay food street will be your best bet e.g. Satok/Uptown Metrocity Matang. Best time is in the evening which is more happening & opportunity to mingle with the locals
@ronniekoh22262 жыл бұрын
Of course the food in Sabah and Sarawak differ from Peninsular Malaysia. Be it Chinese, Indian or Malay cuisines, they are different from Peninsular Malaysia. The influence of indigenous tribes there makes the food in Sabah and Sarawak taste different and they create new dishes.
