It's good to see ya back in front of the camera, Dave! I've got two questions. (1) Are those measurements you gave the same if I was using 450 ohm ladder-line? (2) How high could I run something like this up? Say I had 5 army surplus camo poles. Should I make the top one a fiberglass one? OK, so that's three questions! :)

Nice antenna Dave. That's a lot like mine but instead of 300 ohm, I used 450 ohm window (ladder) line and it too, was my first home brew antenna. I also put an "air choke" on mine as well just for GP. Those antennas work really well and are great for portable use. Great video & 73 - KF7TOV

Does it not effect the impedance with it that close to the wall? I would have thought you would need to have it hanging or supported in free air to get an accurate reading.

I've often found that taping the coax too close to the shorted end causes me to have trouble tuning it. But if I tape a couple of popsicle stick pieces between them that I have much better luck. I just offer that in case anyone has trouble with that themselves.

I built one of these with some ladder line my uncle gave me and put a 70cm trap on it to make it duel band. it is a nice design I got off of CQ online.

hi could you use heat shrink instead of electrical tape to weather proof it more.keep up the great videos as I am learning a lot as a beginner in the hobby working for my foundation certification I cannot wait to try out some of your antennas, keep up the good work thanks from the UK

I would use heat shrink over the electric tape.

I might give this antenna a go, I like its portability. I’m a noob so could do you explain what the purpose of the top part of the antenna does that you put a break in since it’s not now actually connected to anything. Thanks. Jason.

Aren't the measurements different if you put your J-Pole inside a PVC pipe? Thanks

Is that version of J-Pole OK at 70 cm? Often a resonant antenna at 2 m has a broad harmonic around 70 cm and serves as a Dual Band. I'm looking at making a copper pipe J-Pole but one of these inside a PVC tube looks like a great option!

Wow thanks for sharing this video. Until now, all I have found as far as a roll up sim jim was the one made by N9TAX, and Nelson Antennas, which I am sure are great and not a bad price, but I had no idea it was this easy to make. Does anyone know how this one compares to the N9TAX or the Nelson antennas version? Thanks!

Hi! Did you try making one with speaker wire? I've been wondering the same. Wire speaker is more maleable, but it can also twist on itself, would that deform the radiation pattern? 73 de LU4HAM

Ha ha. Have to begg to get recognition. Here. Then somebody cuts the repeater off. Simplex near by works fine, and found that as little 2.2 watts covers over 30 miles. All the way up at 5. It's Scarry. Tks for good show.

Dave, I have seen other videos where putting a twin lead J-Pole (N9TAX) inside a pvc pipe de-tunes the antenna. In your video you did not show yourself using the J-Pole in a pvc pipe. I wonder why yours does not de-tune?
@DaveTadlock

No reason not to use the antenna in the pipe other than just installing it somewhere. I've not had any problem with it inside PVC pipe.
