This video shows a 2 minute description of the difference between Christianity and Buddhism by Bishop Robert Barron given at his "Religion and the Opening Up of the Mind" talk at Google.
He says that in Buddhism the goal is to eliminate desire. Christianity does not want to get rid of all desire, but to awaken a purified higher desire.

Except he is not even close to understanding Buddhism at all. Buddhism is not the 'blowing out of the candle of desire' like he claimed. This suppression of desire is in fact the Christian concept, not the Buddhist one. Buddhists unambiguously welcome the experience of desire (or any other emotion) whenever it arises. The difference is that, unlike Christianity, Buddhist practice leads to not being automatically driven to either satisfy or expel it.

As a Buddhist I would like to add that there is a lot of emphasis on compassion in the Mahayana tradition. And compassion is seen from a Buddhist point of view as the desire to alleviate the suffering of other sentient beings. In this tradition, then, the problem is not so much the desire itself but more the way in which it is directed. Ego-centered desires lead to a lot of dissatisfaction and suffering - not only for ourselves. It is said that ultimate enlightenment is impossible without infinite compassion and wisdom.

"Infinite", meaning from heaven? Whether to or from heaven, this points to purity, or Holiness God made it so He cannot be known through human wisdom itself..... in and of itself. It is the wisdom from heaven that allows our mind to enlighten. For our minds to reach that state is quite a path . For Catholics, the Rosary is the powerful, most powerful, tool. Along with the Blessed Sacrament/Eucharist, conversion and purification of the heart progresses. The Rosary came directly from heaven, to Saint Dominic. Our soul's safety, and reparation to the world for the sins committed against God, Jesus and Mary's Immaculate Heart can be known through the 1917 and beyond messages of Fatima, Portugal.

Nirvana is a "self actualization" there is no God in the process of getting there nor as a final goal. I found God through finally acknowledging that my efforts to get myself there was in vain. I surrendered to what Jesus had done for me on the cross after being a good Buddhist for the first 20 years of my life. Now 39 years later, that was the best decision of my life, no turning back.

Correction: Buddhism doesn't aim to stop/cease ones "desires", instead Buddhism aims to stop/cease "selfish desires" (example: greed) and replace them by "selfless desires" (example: living a life that contribute to the benefit others). The "selfless desire" to teach Buddhist teachings to help cease suffering for all life forms (especially humans) is an important aspect of Buddhism. Some people misinterpret original Buddhism and engage in extreme asceticism and non-desire of all kinds. The original Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) after attaining Awakening (Enlightenment) returned from asceticism and started teaching Buddhism to everyone until dying from old age (and food poisoning). The selfless desire to teach others and help them in attaining Awakening was a very important aspect of the Buddha's life.

That’s interesting…specifically, how does the Buddhist go about “selflessly ending the suffering for all life forms”? Also, why the need to end all suffering - aren’t there benefits to certain types of suffering?
@googleuser3620
@googleuser3620 3 жыл бұрын
@@lorenzmarquez8651 That's a good question, according to Buddhism ,the end of suffering happens when a person achieves "awakening or enlightenment", where the idea of their individual "self" disappears, and so a Buddhist realises that all life forms and everything are inseparable and that the "self" was just a mind construct, once this happens selfish desires disappear (such as greed as an example). And selfless desires (such as compassion to all life forms) starts to develop and become an important part of the Buddhist's life. The end of suffering part is more related to ignorant selfish forms of suffering. And yes, some forms of suffering will lead to growth and direct Buddhists towards the path of enlightenment.

No. What you say is westernized (to be precise, Christianized) Buddhism. The fundamental belief of Buddhism is Anaathmavaadhaa , which literally means "soullessness". i.e. we are not (or we don't have) a soul, or a self, or a person. It's a belief in the nonexistence of personhood. We are delusional when we think we are a person. Buddhism claims that what binds us to this illusion is desire. Cessation of desire is therefore advised in order to come out of the illusion that we are a self or a person. For Buddhism to recognize the categories like selfishness and selflessness is to acknowledge not only that we ARE a self, but also that other "selves" too exist with respect to which we can be selfish or selfless. And to a Theravaadha Buddhist (the original sect) it would be unthinkable.
@AndrewYouTubehandle
@AndrewYouTubehandle 3 ай бұрын
That’s not correct. Buddhism doesn’t seek to put out desire. The obvious example being the desire for enlightenment! The desire to develop loving kindness, equanimity, compassion and happiness in the joy of others. Buddhism seeks to reduce and remove grasping & neurotic craving (ie craving things that cannot lead to happiness etc. for example addicted to watching KZbin videos!); also to reduce and remove pushing away/aversion/hatred; and to develop wisdom rather than ignorance.

Yes. One would have to read hundreds of interpretations of Buddhism/Zen/Hinduism etc to get a good sense of the ideas BUT there is nothing that says that desire is in itself a bad thing. The Buddha wanted to teach his ideas, did he DESIRE to teach them? He travelled around and debated others, did he DESIRE to do so? If not, why did he do it? Even if you desire not to desire that is desire. It's more of realizing you desire it, accept it, move on or go for it but don't make your happiness or life purpose bound to it.

Philippians 2:6-8 teaches us to empty as Jesuus was empty. Long before St. Paul spoke these famous words, Buddha was already teaching these things. Jesus, unlike the rest of us was born empty since he was an avatar of the logos. A person that is empty of tanha (destructive desire) or what the Jews call yetzer hara. Jesus was born in a complete and total state of unity of faith and gnosis, but until we reach that state, we are not complete human being. "until we all reach unity in the faith (shraddha) and in the knowledge (gnosis / rigpa) of the Son of God (luminous mind) and become complete (teleion / perfect), attaining to the whole measure of the fullness (siddhi /pleroma) of Christ." Ephesians 4:13 He was the only person born (begotten) a Son of God. Even Siddartha had to put in effort to attain kenosis, Jesus was born that way. Emptiness (kenosis) provides room to be filled with the light of Christ (clear light). A person cannot attain kenosis through good deeds unfortunatly. Good deeds are necessary part of God's plan to correct the world, but they do not directly result in sonship. Kesnosis is is the result of a process of self surrender we call meditation. Surrender is another word for faith. Meditation is a tool for the cultivation of faith. Through meditation, we can attain theoria (vision / darshan) of the uncreated light of Christ. The result of theoria is pleroma.

The Buddha never taught that desire was bad. This is a misunderstanding of the 4 noble truths. Westerners are forever misinterpreting it. Desire for that which is virtuous and good is encouraged. Desire for that which is destructive is considered a hindrance to your progress. That is why the beginning of the practice - before you even pick up a single sutta - is to take the 5 precepts. Nowhere is it taught that ALL desires are to be abandoned.

The 4 noble truth adress Tanha as the source of Dukkha (Suffering, Stress, Dis-ease, Disatisfaction). But Desire is not a 100 percent accurate translation of Tanha i feel. Tanha is a kind of craving, unquenchable thrist, a (errant) desire. Sometimes symbolized as Fire, since fire burns on the more fuel you add to it. Never satisfied. Thats why Nirvanna is symbolized as the blowing out of a lid candle. This is the kind if Desire, Buddhist practice aims to adress. There is a kind of a noble kind of desire. And as such i think Bishop Baron just confirmed that there is indeed common ground between Christianity and Buddhism.

Jesus teaches us that love is defined as the intense attachment for the benefit of our friends over ourselves. The intensity so high, that one would be able to lay down their very own life, against a 'human' sense for self-preservation. @@alisterrebelo9013In Buddhism, there is no “self”. So, for whom are you laying down “your” life, and who is doing the laying down? In Buddhism all life is precious, including “yours”. And let us not forget that the same man who called laying down your life to be a great good, also said that we should hate our own lives, and hate family, father, mother, and children. In other words, lay down your life first for god and NOT your friends. These kinds of contradictions are what make your scriptures, for me, untenable.

Here's what the difference is: snuffing out desire means you will not act rightfully when the time comes, and you're teaching not to be passionate about doing what's right. If you have the desire to see and do what is right, you will negate wrongs in the world. This is why liberty reigned here in the United States so much in the first 100 years or so. Nowadays, people have lost their way and we see more non-religious or passive religions. So the active people (govt aka evil) will get their way.

Desire means "of the Father". All desires are Creator-given...but...it's when those normal natural desires deviate, become perverted, when they rule over us instead of us ruling over our desires, that desire can be a concern... When desire becomes lust it is desire debased, and the humans engaging in lust (of any kind) are debased. Sex is marvelous! Food fabulous! Education is grand! Money is advantageous...but, ultimately, do we rule over our desires, or do they rule over us? I think Buddha was a marvelous Truth Seeker doing the best he could with what truth he was given and I expect to see him in Heaven...but, he wasn't God, nor did he say he was God. Jesus is God, not Buddha. Buddhists, if they know about Jesus, but, refuse to turn from inherited or cultural beliefs and traditions, well, I'm not so sure I'll see them in heaven... The two Witnesses in Revelations are the Knowledge of God and the Spirit of God...not all have the privilege of reading or hearing God's knowledge found in the Holy Bible, but, every soul's conscience can hear the Holy Spirit...and the Spirit shall lead some, who haven't even heard of Jesus, into the Way Everlasting.

Bishop Baron is not a Buddhist, so he can be forgiven for know knowing what he doesn't know. Still, he must know he doesn't know everything, and so should preface his comments by indicating that his views are his own. In any case, Buddhism fully acknowledges the benefit of desire (i.e., the desire to end the cycle of suffering) insofar as it may motivates one to engage with the eight-fold noble path. Ultimately, however, at least in a Mahayana context, desire is transformed into wisdom.

I agree that he should have placed that caveat. In Christianity the ultimate reward is not in eliminating suffering. Christians learn to deal with suffering, but it is not the ultimate goal/reward. The biggest reward is being with God, being able to love unconditionally God and neighbor. The pure agape (not eros) is in the top of the Christian goal. Suffering is seen as unavoidable, and Christians want to learn to deal with suffering with patience, courage and use it for good (e.g., increase empathy, and perhaps detach from things that separate us from God).

He doesn’t understand what Buddhists mean by nirvana or desire. Nirvana more closely translates to breathe out or let go, not blow out. And desire to Buddhists is a clenching on to impermanent objects (people, items, things, places, experiences, etc) not so much an aspiration or duty. Otherwise why would the Buddha have taught for 50 years? Why even do anything if desire of any kind is the problem? How even do anything without a desire to do something? Buddhism translates horribly to English and western views on it are so flawed we’re seeing contrast where there is none. Buddhism and Christianity point to the same place, they just take different paths. It’s obvious when you actually listen to the gospels. “Know them by their fruits”. Buddhism has only produced goodness and peace. In fact it’s the only major world religion without major scandals and issues. Pretty clear what they’re doing achieves salvation and walking a righteous path.

From "What the Buddha Taught" (1959/2006) by Walpola Rahula (page 41-42). Professor Walpola Rahula was a well known Buddhist monk. "Here it should be clearly and distinctly understood, without any confusion, that what is compared to a flame or a fire gone out is not Nirvana, but "being" composed of the Five Aggregates who realized Nirvana. This point has to be emphasized because many people, even some great scholars, have misunderstood and misinterpreted this similie as referring to Nirvana. Nivana is never compared to a fire or a lamp gone out." Bishop Robert Barron in the video: "Nirvana is the blowing out of the candle of desire". These two statements can't both be right. Try this. When you ask where is the desire coming from, you mind will not find it anywhere. Buddhism does not tell you to eliminate any thing. It helps you to see there is no self on anything. "to awaken a purified higher desire" is just an opinion like any other ones. Everything including your thought in this moment is just a cause to combine with other causes for the next thing or things to happen. The only thing always with you unchanged is your awareness without any opinion. Once an opinion appears and you are not aware about it, you are back to normal cycle of cause and effect. Interesting? With your awareness without opinion you are not living like vegie, but no stress and more.

With respect, this is simplistic beyond helpfulness. There is a much more essential philosophical division between the two than simply how to handle desire. Christianity is fundamentally concerned with how to save the self. Buddhism's conception is that salvation lies in realizing there is no self to save.
@nessuno__
@nessuno__ 2 жыл бұрын
Christianity is *not* "fundamentally concerned with how to save the self." If you had to pick one thing to say it "fundamentally" is, that would be re-unification with God's Will. For example, an absolute mountain of Christianity is dedicated to the practical effects of what you do once your salvation is basically already assured, i.e., once you have genuine faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior. That is just the jumping off point into a life of Christian faith where -- especially in non-Evangelical Protestant Christianity -- the love and closeness that one feels toward Jesus drives them to express their faith expressions of love toward their fellow man, e.g., charity, works of mercy, personal sacrifice even unto death. So your comment does strike me as simplistic beyond helpfulness to say Christianity is fundamentally about self when the highest expression of the faith is the ultimate self-sacrifice toward others. If you doubt this, gaze again at the crucifix, held as an example for the Christian God made man, who allowed himself to be tortured and executed so that humanity could be saved.

Bishop seems to have some understanding of Buddhism, which is wonderful and open-minded. However, I think the conversation can go further because what he said is not accurate. "The point of demarcation he mentions does not seem correct to me, I am not an expert but I have studied Buddhism for many years. Buddhists encourage people to keep the religion in which they were born (Catholicism, Islam, etc.) because converting could cause confusion. For the same reason, although Buddhists are open to interfaith conversation on common themes such as love, compassion, generosity, etc., there are certain Buddhist concepts that some teachers prefer not to discuss with non-Buddhists to avoid the risk of them developing confusion or even doubt in their own faith. Having said that, it may be better not to go any further in the conversation. Perhaps it is better just to focus on cultivating values and qualities that benefit oneself and others, whatever our & their beliefs and faiths.

@Shield of Faith jesus is a king in the same sense all other buddhas and christs are kings. A king is someone who has renounced everything of the world. When a man has Truth within oneself, he's the enperor of everything, even if outwardly he's a beggar or lives a simple life. You don't even understand GOD! Do you think it is some bearded dude up in the sky and jesus was his literal son? How stupid one has to be to believe in that stuff? You don't even read your own holy text! Jesus himself said "if you look for heaven in the sky, the birds will precede you. If you look for it in the depths of ocean, then the fish will precede you. Therefore, Look for the kingdom within you". And when he says "I'm the way", he didn't mean he's the ONLY way. Christians made it so, so that they can sell their religion while downplaying other religions. Just like any other corporation wants to eliminate competition, like they want to be the ONLY player, the church too wanted to be the only religion. So they made jesus THE way. But jesus is just one way. Anyone, by realizing the divinity within, can become a way for others. Thomas merton, Joel goldsmith, these people can become ways. Because they realized. What you just said is a belief. It is not even coming from your own personal intellectual understanding. @Shield of Faith again you're merely repeating your beliefs. Everything you have been tought, you've memorized, you're simply repeating those words. As if this is am exam and you need to pass it! Everything you said, i know all of it. I've read plenty of Christian mysticism, and my favorite is Margaret Porrete. Whom the traditional literalist like yourself burned to death. But she was the one who inspired me to read christianity. Otherwise, i found it boring and useless. And as i said in my first comment, god, truth etc are all the same thing. Buddha called it the truth, because it's easier to understand. But he talked of the SAME REALITY. Buddhists do not believe in literal existence of a deity. And as fir god, there are many other terms. This is why i said literalists are obsessed with names. So you can try to sell your religion elsewhere, by saying yours is the ONLY way, and all others are fake/inferior. The only good part in your massive "auto-generated" reply, is the part where you asked what is the truth, and what's the origin of it. Truth cannot be known directly through a belief. We can only know the untruth, and remove those. Then the Truth will be left behind. Truth has no origin or end. It was always there. All things come from ir and wo return to it. As meister eckhart said "God's ground and my ground are one ground." Here ground means "essence ". We both have the same essence, and in that sense, we ALL address children of god, not just jesus. He simply realized it and thus BECAME a christ. Gautama BECAME buddha by realizing the same truth.

To bad that Bishop Robert doesn't want to tell the truth or maybe he doesn't understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Buddhist teaching is there is no God-no entity who created everything, that everything is created and then distructed in never ending cycles by natural laws. The whole Bible is about God who created Heavens and Earth, God created us and humankind fallen into sin. Because of sin death came and everyone who is not saved will be judged for their sins in fron of God the Father and Jesus Christ-God in the flesh. Buddhist teaching is a path towards the liberation of suffering with 4 nobe truths, 8 fold path, dependent origination,... through meditation-the higest meditative state is no concentrantion empty state-beyond body and mind-there are no thoughts so the link of depended origination is cutted-there is no becoming nor ceasing, no liberation no suffering, no samsara, no Nirvana-heart sutra. The word of God says that suffering, sickness, death does not originate in the mind, but is coming from sin. And nobody can liberate themselves with any practice or morality-this is selfrighteousness, no one is righteouss before the most Holy God creator of everything and no one will be justified before God with any kind of practices, morality, concentration, empty mind, yoga,... Salvation is a gift of God to anyone who believes that Jesus Christ paid our sins on the cross and rose the 3rd day from the grave for our justification. Jesus was a perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world, because only Jesus Christ was sinless, everybody else ever born-ever will be born are in sin, all humans after Adam and Eve are in sin. So Jesus who never sined took upon our sins and took our judgment for our sins on the cross so that anyone who believes is forgiven by God and become a child of God, has eternal life in heaven, God will give us eternal body just like Jesus resurrected with eternal body, ate with his disciples and ascended to Heaven before them. When we believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ God seals us with his Holy Spirit until we go to Heaven. By one spirit we are baptised into the Body of Christ. And in Christ we are not sinners, but saints, we are not slaves to sin under power of Satan, but we are adopted into the familly of God. Jesus destroyed the works-curses of the devil on the cross. So that by faith we are set free forever. Buddhist tradition-philosophy is a deception from satan as any other way-doctrine to deceive people and not be saved from eternal damnation. That's why Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life and no on comes to the father then by me. There is no other truth, way apart from Jesus-who is the word of God and who is God. Everything was created through Jesus and for Jesus. It says that every knee shall bow before him and everyone will confess him as Lord to the glory of the Father. Buddha can't do any good to you, he couldn't save himself as no one can and he was used by Satan to deceive people. This is the good news, you can be saved today and have eternal life by the word of God.

I agree with many things you said, but it is important for us Christians to be respectful of others. Starting with Buddha and his early followers, and many of their followers today that grew up in an environment where Christianity is not present, or worse, in a Christian environment where people give terrible testimony without any good truly Christian examples around them. They are trying to do the best their can. If we are not respectful, although we might have good intentions, the effect could be the total opposite.

The desire that is mentioned in Buddhist language has more of a connotation with craving, attachment. Like grabbing on to an object without intending to let it go. You are to abandon craving for that which causes clinging to this world. The very first thing to start practicing is the 5 precepts, which is an expression of your desire to be virtuous. They re like your western Ten Commandments, but only 5: no stealing, no lying, no substance abuse, no killing, no sexual misconduct. You have to DESIRE to abandon these. Christianity tells you that you are guaranteed to live forever, and free of pain, suffering, or worry, if you agree to eat the flesh off a dead guy on a stick and drink a pint of his blood to wash it down now and then. Imagination being God in man is stuff for natural minds that judge. Ecclesiastes 3:15: “That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away.” The “natural man” cannot grasp that, for to him reality is based only on the evidence of the senses. The man of reason could justify the verse’s end, saying if it has any meaning then the writer must mean recurrence. The sun comes every day and the moon completes its cycle and the seasons come and go. If we took a picture of the universe today, the scientists can compute how long it will take to return to this point in the picture. So the intellectual man could justify the verse; but that is not what is meant, for it is addressed not to the man of reason or the man of sense, but to the man of Imagination. What is it all about? “That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been, and God seeks what has been driven away.”

@Santha There is. Since the start of Humanity until the end. Since the Garden of Eden to the End. Yet, Christ Crucified is the definition and conclusion of what's the Truth, the one that will stay until the end of Ages. He came as King and conquered the World in all of this, He conquered through corruption, on that cross humanities corruption was on His body. At the end, in the cross Christ said "I am finished". Christ Crucified but was resurrect. And will return to judge the Living and the Dead, and His kingdom and has no end.✝️🌹

Bishop Robert Barron means well, but if we are going to talk about spirituality, the question arises: where is Robert in his own spiritual development? Has he reached a spiritual awakening? If so, to what degree? Zen monks spend their entire lives in intense and strict ascetic practice to reach satori. I don't think we can say the same for Robert. Of what good is it to devote one's life to God without the spiritual awakening? Talking ABOUT God every Sunday is nothing more than a social gathering hence spiritual bypassing. Robert's knowledge about being a Christian has its place but he will tell you only what he knows and considering the way the world is now, we need more than just talk, we need a real transformation of the heart and mind. We need all religions to look into a mirror and have them realize that their respective God's do nothing to help make this a better world. On the contrary, it's often making things worse. Should the day Robert have a spiritual awakening that makes him realize the utter dehumanizing effects of our present political discourse, the greed in capitalism and the disregard of climate change from our inept politicians, then I'll listen to him. I mean, you will never hear Robert say what Dr. Fromm said decades ago about the often insane world we live in. Says he, *_"I have tried to show in a previous chapter that democracy cannot work in an alienated society, and that the way our democracy is organized contributes to the general process of alienation. If democracy means that the individual expresses his conviction and asserts his will, the premise is that he has a conviction, and that he has a will. The facts, however, are that the modern, alienated individual has opinions and prejudices but no convictions, has likes and dislikes, but no will. His opinions and prejudices, likes and dislikes, are manipulated in the same way as his taste is, by powerful propaganda machines-which might not be effective were he not already conditioned to such influences by advertising and by his whole alienated way of life. The average voter is poorly informed too. While he reads his newspaper regularly, the whole world is so alienated from him that nothing makes real sense or carries real meaning. He reads of billions of dollars being spent, of millions of people being killed; figures, abstractions, which are in no way interpreted in a concrete, meaningful picture of the world. The science fiction he reads is little different from the science news. Everything is unreal, unlimited, impersonal. Facts are so many lists of memory items, like puzzles in a game, not elements on which his life and that of his children depends"_* From his book "The Sane Society" If Bishop Robert was awake, if he had the spiritual perception to see the utter madness playing out in the world, he would be mad as hell about it. This reality would make its presence felt in all that he did and said. But no. The quote above is of no real concern to him as it would be to a common man on the street. There is too much talk about God and not much about transformation.

This is wrong, the difference is: We can't save ourselves. Creation of your "own" knowledge of Good and Evil can only lead to Evil because there's no Good without God. That moment, when Adam and Eve decided to create their own Good and Evil, the moment of Original Sin. The Sin that we all repeat: Pride and hypocrisy: Pretending that we're Good when we CAN'T be Good by ourselves. In order to preserve our Pride. And thus dying(separating eternally from God) in the process.

A bit off-topic but...the definition of self is the problem. The personal self is an illusion within time and the three or more other dimensions of reality. That self is an illusion because time is a hard component (all time is completed) of the space-time continuum. Thus determinism without free will is a fact of nature; but within the flow of time we have the perception of free will. This perception within time allows us to choose pain or pleasure, right or wrong, and any form of religious flavor or not that suits us. The only true self is the one ever-existing continuum (a sort of super-monad for the religiously inclined). This time-space continuum (multiverse) has always existed (constantly rebirthing itself) and from it has come all forms. All the whims of men and religion reside within the fixed confines of this multiverse or ground of being as it were. This is the Father in the Trinity, father being a recent anthropomorphism of more ancient references.

This is a materialistic perspective. Assuming that all is matter and energy as in physics. Macro physics are predictable and deterministic and we can place formulas to them. But I never seen a successful formula being used to predict a human being's well, probably not even an animal. The problem with the materialistic view is that it first stop believing in God, and then goes on to stop believing that people are real.

Your entire write up in self-contradictory, and illogical. P1 - You silently presume your self is real and true. C1 - Your assert the self is an illusion. The implication is that your senses including your mind are an illusion. C2 - Based on your "Self" being an illusion, you assert that you understand the nature of reality. C3 - Number of claims of reality based on your illusory self and senses. You've got to reconcile your presumption P1 with your first claim C1, then amend C2, C3 etc.

The original Christians were Catholic. The Catholic mass, in essence, was there from the start. The first Christian split was in the 11th century; west Catholics, and east Orthodox. I attended an Orthodox mass a few years ago, and it is almost like attending a Catholic mass, of course over the years differences accumulate, but the essence is the same. For me Catholics and Christians are the same thing. Orthodox are Christians as well. Then in the 16 century there was an additional Christian split, and the splits from there became exponential. But thanks God the Catholic church remains.

@@joshmilligan7682 The Catholic mass consists of initial prayer, repenting of sins, reading the old testament, psalms, new testament, and finally always the Gospels. Then the creed, then prayers for intentions, then the consecration of the Eucharist, with the exact words of Jesus as in the 4 Gospels, then more prayers, and finally communion as the Gospel, and Paul mentions in his letters. And at the center is the last supper words of Jesus. John 6, Paul's letters. What stronger references are than those? Westerners do not like to discuss no-self, as it is very alien to them and is unique to Buddhism. They always think it means you are “nothing” or “no one”. I usually avoid the topic when asked to talk about Dhamma, and if I am asked, I try my best to change the subject. When I am forced to address it, i see my western audience going all cross-eyed. Or their ears hear the exact opposite of what my mouth is saying. It is very curious. 🤭

How this comment help? I can say all political parties are wrong and the world would be better without them. This does not help as well. As bad as political parties are, and as much as I dislike political bias and corruption, saying a blanket statement like that does not help. They still have their purpose, their good things which I am totally ignoring. And without them probably we would revert to some barbaric political system. We still need to evolve them, improve them. Blanket statements and generalizations are very rarely constructive.

Training to erase your mind, to feel nothing, and to cling to nothing, seems to be an artificial death to your God given humanity and senses. A walking state of vegetabilism. God Christ, did not reject suffering - in fact, he accepted it as a "perfect sacrifice" to release us, from human sin - and give us humans a chance at heaven. Christ God, rejected the devil's offerings to relieve his "suffering" in the desert for 40 days. It had meaning. Suffering, brings forth liberation and salvation in life. Buddha, ran away from his wife and newborn, as a wealthy and pampered man, to learn to escape from his fear and obsession with suffering. That's ego and self interest. Not love.

In Buddhism, you are not asked to “erase your mind”. You are called upon to awaken it. You are not asked to “reject suffering”. You are taught to know what it is intimately, which is why it loses its sting. All life is precious, not only humanity. And finally, the Buddha’s wife became a nun, as did his son. He did not “abandon them”. Please do not step on the brightly glowing flames of others in order to make your little spark glow more brightly. Thank you.

It's simply a decent philosophy - but it is very passive one at that, and in the end your mind is that of blank page, utter avoidance of reality.
