I too, broke the far right hook on the door that the pins slide into. I also broke one of the 2 clips on the filter cover. They were tight. The pins were a total pain to get back in once taken out and the door removed completely. Next time I'll try to leave them in and see if I can get my hand in to remove the filter cover and replace. I also had a hard time getting the bungee cord back on. Took me about an hour total. I was cussing the whole time. Afterwards, went to my wife's Hyundai Santa Fe and had hers replaced in less than 5 minutes. So much easier.

As noted below, if you're afraid you'll break the hinge or other stuff, pull the the pins out and remove the glovebox door. It's also easy to do. This has worked fine for me 3 times without breaking stuff, but others apparently aren't as delicate or are having other issues.

Nice. I just changed my cabin air filter for the first time. 6 years and 75k miles on the original filter and 90% of driving in smoggy Suwon, South Korea. Didn’t even need tools. BTW flow arrow should point down - I had to pause video at the end to check. Filter cost $12 at Advance Auto Parts. Thanks man.

Just an update: I have a Ford Expedition 2011. I couldn't find the cabin air filter show here and I asked a mechanic and he said my car doesn't doesn't have that (just the one filter under the hood). He checked just to be sure. But at least I now know. :)

This video made it so much easier than other videos showing how to pull out the entire glovebox (which by the way started to fall out on its own...). Still that dang pull-cord got lost up in the glovebox until I fingered about in there and pulled it back out to attach it. Whose terrible idea was that pull cord anyway. My 1983 Ford Bronco II had no frilly snowflake pullcord attached to the glovebox. Get your act together Ford! Mazda is only a little better at simplified design, but still a pain in the neck. Changing the cabin air filter in my miata is torture.

If you want more room by removing the glove box, there 2 white pins that need removed under the box. They are the right and left parts of the hinge mechanism. If you push down to hard while installing the filter like he did the hinge breaks. Carefull.

On the 2016 cabin air filter door the clips are not as depicted. On this model, just put pressure on the door and slide it down out of the tabs on top. Learned this the hard way, after breaking one of the tabs off. Also there is a trick to sliding the hinge pins out to keep from breaking the glove box hinge.

My new 2016- trimmed that right hand plastic tab 1/4" so it can move past the airbag assy with small cutters. My old 2011 was as in this video.

Something I found out the hard way on this. If you don't move the passenger seat fwd and let the door rest on it, it's very likely you'll end up breaking the glovebox door. There are two white slide pins on the bottom corners of the glovebox door that have to be slid inboard (there are arrows). If you do not slide them out of the way and you let the door come too far, you permanently break the outboard alignment hooks on the door.
@vernwimer12447 жыл бұрын
Wish I had read this before I broke mine. There must be a trick to those pins. I could not get mine to budge.
@thenry3567 жыл бұрын
Superglue or epoxy. I glued mine back together and left it clamped while it set then ended up running some special 3M tape around the outside to reinforce it. The pins were a pain to get to move... I had to grab them with a monster pair of needlenose pliers.

WARNING: If you have a 2017 Explorer DO NOT follow these directions or you could easily break the delicate hinges on your glovebox! There are two white, removable pins underneath the glovebox that need to be removed first and then the entire door comes off easily. The hinges on mine broke just from the weight of the empty glovebox itself! You've been warned

Thanks. If that was a OEM filter from factory then I am honestly surprised that it made it 40K miles. Both mine and my biddies were about as trashed with far less mileages. My buddies 2018 Sport is on his third filter in only 10K. And I am on my second one in just over 7K. Both of us are joining the K&N washable reusable club when they arrive. I put the cheap STP one from AutoZone to at least have something inside until K&N arrives. Appears my filter was misprinted. The air flow direction arrows shows bottom to top. All others that I have seen indicate top to bottom. For those replacing with the STP and FRAM. The part number and air flow indicator arrow are printed on the long side of the filter. Yes the NON visible side. I used a contrasting color Sharpie and wrote the arrow direction and a date/mileage on the access cover (Visible) side. Arrow direction appears to be wrong but I transcribed as written. Won’t matter in a few days but make a good note of the arrow especially if still on the factory OEM filter. We try to give the factory the benefit the doubt in correct installation. Appears the OEM filter was installed correctly bulky the arrow. Not the assembly workers fault that the label was misprinted. Another top in addition to the obvious one about inspect the filter well above what the owners manual says. 2018 Cabin Air Filter owners manual inspection recommendation is 20K. I can confirm that the interval is way too long. I personally recommend 10K with possible follow up inspection at 15K. Personally for the minimal time and effort I recommend replacing at 10K. The Fram Fresh Breeze versions have lasted me about 10K on previous vehicles. Shorter then the recommendation form owners manual but far better than the 5K OEM service life. Both are cheap paper thin filters but the Fresh Breeze has activated Charcoal and Baking Soda to help with cut down on odor and mildew accumulation. I also apply a fairly liberal coating of Febreeze to the new filter. That will give a new fresh scent through the vents for a couple of days after installation. Removal Note; the retaining cable on the right side of the glove compartment box.......use a piece of string or wire to loop and hold on the passenger side footwell. I used speaker wire tied it off and anchored to my passenger door handle. Makes it easier to grab and replace in the tab during installation. Doesn’t have to be real tight just enough to keep the cable visible. Installation note #2: I recommend a piece of tape (masking, painters, electrical or Alligator tape). Tape to the new filter and use the tape as a “Pull Tab” to make the filter easier to grip during the next removal. Place tape in the enter but don’t cover the direction arrow. Another option and probably more secure would be a small ZipTie with just enough slack to grab the ZipTie with either your hands or a hook removal tool. Tight enough to keep the access cover flush but still grab. Don’t worry about the filter especially the cheap OEM filters. Cut a small slit about 1/8 maximum near the first pleat in from the edge. Slide ZipTie through the filter and the latching part of the ZipTie. Fold back the ZipTie buckle into the pleated area cut off excess and your done.

This is NOT the way to do this. I've owned a 2015 and now a 2017. As others have said, you should remove the white pins under the glove box or risk breaking breaking them, as I did the first time I tried doing so in the way shown here in the video.
