I had a friends with 4 kids who lived on a boat in the Caribbean for most of the year. Came back for a few months each summer to work in the medical field. They always did a free clinic on an island each winter with a small plot of land they bought.

Hi Dan, I think you should consider Haiti. Île a vache is on the south coast and is supposed to be safe. I went to Ile de tortue this year in the north and it was a great experience.
