With Microsoft Project 2019, for work, material and cost resources we are taking as an example the construction of a house. We will emphasize on obtaining the construction license and building the concrete stab for the basement.
You have learnt something, this is great !!! The video helped you solve a problem, prepare an exam, show your gratitude by buying me a coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/vision6D
Thank you very much.

Many thanks, I've been looking for "what is resource allocation in project management" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Seyily Substratal Smasher - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for discovering how to get amazing project management and business templates without the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my m8 got amazing results with it.

My PM Teacher recommended your videos, and I'm glad she did! These videos are extremely well done, and are very helpful. You are doing an excellent job! I had a question regarding project planning software. MS Project is the one most PMs use, but are there any others you recommend? For example, I have started learning the ProjectLibre software, as it is open-source, in case I cannot use MS Project for some reason.

Awesome! Thank you! To get the best learning experience the combination of MS Project with my videos will help you a lot. Now of course that you can practice with other software there are a lot. I have no other reference to recommend you. The knowledge of a software like Ms Project can also open you certain job opportunities. Depending on your industry you might also look into agile methodologies. Let me know about your findings. Greetings from Geneva.

@vision6D

Thank you for watching. To clearly understand your question what are the units for each field, that you want to display? My guess is costs? costs of material, costs of work, costs of equipment and total costs? If my guess is right, those fields as such you do not have them, but you could create them. I'll dig into it a bit more when you give me some more details as what you want to show. Have a good time till then.

Hi. Very educative! A question. I would like to set up effort-driven tasks such that project calculates the duration for me. According to project, 1 builder + 2 workers (as in your video) would complete the task in 1/3 the duration of 1 builder. In other words, project would assign exactly the same effort for all the work resources - but this is not the case. How do I go around this?
@vision6D

Thank you for your comment and for the question. First let's make sure that the task is defined as effort driven. Make the column work appear if it's no the case. Then it should equally attribute the work. In which column do you insert the work value?

Another excellent video. One question about resources. Can this be done: Assume you have a project, where you need to stake/position 1,000 survey points. One surveyor can stake 50 points/day. So, if you have only one surveyor, the project will take 20 days. But, if you have TWO surveyor, the project will take 10. 4 surveyors = 5 days. Is there a way to determine the DURATION of a task depending on HOW MANY/MUCH resources you assign to it? i.e. The MAIN TASK duration will shorten or gain length in accordance to the assignment of resources in the SUB-TASKS? I hope I am clear, and thanks for any possible reply.

@@vision6D Thanks, V6D. That part was clear, but PROJECT handles resources by assigning a percentage to them. If you increase the usage (in my example, from 1 surveyor to 2) the main task indeed reduces in time. But my question was: can you assign a VALUE to the main task (1,000 point) and have it shrink or expand depending on how the SUB TASKS increase the completion of the given value for the main task? In PROJECT, once you make a task dependent on SUB TASKS, the properties of the MAIN TASK are limited. Anyway, I am taking too much time from you. Thanks again, keep up the good work and the videos. Super helpful.

Thank you for that question. In this video the notion of cost is a resource to the project. When the carpenters do a work, I do not manage resources as people, but as a general cost. Their work cost is 10'000 for example. So it's not the actual cost, we are estimating the costs. This estimation will help me do the budget. How do you see it? Subscribing helps me grow the channel. @vision6D
@vision6D 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that interesting question. My answer is simple, I do not recommend to add salaries. You have a cost for work that includes more than the coworker salary. Like space used, admin costs, tooling, furniture, etc. It is easier to work in a project with an hourly rate that includes all of this than to go down to salary details. I do not know about your specific situation but you can have the analogy of the bill you pay when you repair your car. In my case there is an hour rate for the worker and I do not need to know the salary of that specific worker. What do you think?

Dear Christian Enjoyed watching your videos on MS Project and helped me clear some of my doubts about MS Project. I have one question on resource esp for a PM. How do you account for PM time in the project? I have a situation where the PM is paid from the project budget at annual fee of $120K. If I pro-rate this as fixed cost over the 12 months of the project it will be $10,000. This is fine BUT this PM has also activities assigned to him in the planning and control phases of the project. Meaning there are tasks assigned to the PM. If setup a resource sheet for the PM based on his hourly rate then how do I reconcile the amount that is pro-rated at the same time these task he is doing. I will be paying him twice during the task period that he is doing. Can u suggest how best to account for the PM time in a project. Appreciate your input on this. Best Rgds KR

Thank you for this interesting question about how to include PM costs in an Ms Project plan. The answer can be complex and deserves a video on the larger subject of PM tasks and resource in a project. To simplify it, your approach is correct define tasks done by the PM, not to detailed and assign them to a PM resource and cost them. 1. Define PM tasks (Project Management, project control or more detailed etc.) 2. Define PM Resource (type work or cost) 3. Assign PM to those tasks, 100%, 80%, 50%, 20% or any other In your case I think you could explore a PM resource of type cost Let me know what your solution is. Greetings from Geneva.

This is a very common issue and I have not come across any posting or article that gives a good answer most talk about a percentage of the total budget etc... Now going back to what you have suggested in creating a resource called Project Mangement of type "cost" are you saying I can assign 20% ($24K) of his time in the Control phase and 80% ($96K) of his time on planning phase for example and in this way MS project will have accounted all the 120K? Is there any site that you know that I can read on this PM cost accounting that you know of? Appreciate your help. Rgds KR - Singapore

@@kishranai6262 I will definitely do a video on the subject, thanks to you. My answer wasn't complete. In Ms Project for a PM, I would leave you the choice to define it as a work resource or as a cost resource. In case of work resource you can also use the attribution percentage to reflect your situation. May be in your case it is better to define The PM as a cost resource if you are not interested in seeing how many hours the PM spends on the project. I need to simulate your situation to give a precise answer. Cheers

It will be great if you can create an example based on the scenario I described where in a 12 month project the total wages for the PM is $120K. This $120K is also coming out from the project budget. The PM is also at the same time doing some activities during the planning, monitoring and control phases of the project. How do I account for the PM's time in MS Project such that the total cost of the PM in the schedule plan matches that of the budgeted cost of the PM. Thanks a lot.
