There are 2 similar equations that differ only because they have different subscripts. Velocity (tangential) = Radius * Angular Velocity, this one is for tangential velocity and you could be talking about tangential velocity at different points on an object, so the radius could change. The other equation is Velocity (center of mass) = Radius (object) * Angular Velocity, this one is for the center of mass velocity of an object that is rolling without slipping. You are welcome for the videos.

The cosine function is almost the same as the sine function. Cosine is simply shifted to the left by 90 degrees or pi/2 radians. cos x = sin (x + pi/2). So the only difference is the initial condition. You would use sine if the object in SHM starts at the equilibrium position (at velocity maximum). You would use cosine if the object starts at its amplitude (zero velocity). Good luck on the AP Test.

Caleb Joyal Look carefully at the drawing and you will see the vertical dotted line that has a length "d".
@calebjoyal51169 жыл бұрын
I see it, but what is that dotted line? From what point to the center? Sorry if this sounds trivial but for some reason I'm not seeing it.
@FlippingPhysics9 жыл бұрын
Caleb Joyal The dotted triangle has two sides that I have labelled. "r" is the hypotenuse and "d" is opposite the angle. Therefore the distance "d" is equal to "r" times the sine of theta. The point is the distance "d" doesn't change as the object moves to the right even though both "r" and theta do.

I think you incorrectly wrote the position function for simple harmonic motion near the end of the video. It should be Asin(wt+phi)
@paulnguyen13046 жыл бұрын
depending on phi / phase shift these two equations are the same! I generally use the equation with cosine because I like having the graph start at the place where the spring has the greatest amount of potential energy and is fully stretched, but I'm pretty sure you can use sin when you would like the graph to start at the equilibrium point, where kinetic energy is greatest and potential energy is zero.. hopefully I'm right (cause ap test is tomorrow lol) and this helps!

@FlippingPhysics10 жыл бұрын
Bill Kong Direct quote from the video "Newton's universal law of gravitation. The force of gravity between any two objects is equal to negative big G, mass-1, mass-2 divided by r-squared, times the unit vector r." So yes, it is the unit vector r and yes it is r^2.

Doesn't x(t)= A sin(wt+fi) for simple harmonic motion?
@carultch3 жыл бұрын
It's phi, by the way. F is Latin, and PH is Greek. That is the general equation, where A and phi depend on the initial conditions. In the event that you start it at the equilibrium position and give it an initial velocity, phi would equal zero, and sine without any phase shift would model the simple harmonic motion. More often than not, you start it at rest, at an extended position from equilibrium, and cosine is a more apt choice of trig function to form your equation. Ultimately, the difference is the value of phi, and where within the function you define the motion to start for whether it is sine or cosine.
