Use to splash around in wolf creek when I was a kid. I own three Martins, favorite is a J40, own a couple of fiddles, an old Dobro slide guitar, a mandolin, a five string banjo and several other guitars. They mostly now are coffin dwellers, getting old. They have seen some good times, hopefully supplied some happiness. That’s what it’s all about, you can’t go wrong helping people or making them happy for a while. Life is short, you are not guaranteed anything

Great story on finding your Tyminsky D28. I had a similar experience finding my Tyminsky D28. At Harry's Guitar Shop (Raleigh NC), I had a half dozen dreads lined up. Several Martin's, a Santa Cruz, a Huss Dalton, and I was playing through each one. At the end I couldn't choose one, because they were all really good. But one more D28 happened to be hanging on the wall and caught my eye. I guess we hadn't pulled down cause it was used. I thought what the hell, picked it up, and the very first chord filled the room. Holy **** It rang like a piano. I didn't even know what kind of D28 I had bought until I got it home and tried to lookup the serial number, #139.

I was on the Cass Scenic Railroad when I was 12 yo, traveling from Clarksburg with family. When the conductor layed into the train whistle to tell passengers to embark, my eyes came upon the seven foot stuffed Grisly Bear on the front porch of the main building up there and it scared the shit out of me. My right sneaker actually fell off my foot from my reaction to the fright.

Wow Randy, some mighty fine pickin there on that great Martin! Im very glad you have that fine axe, I wonder how much that guitar would go for now. My Mossman is built like a Martin and Mossman worked for Martin before he started his own shop. Even has the Mossman brand inside like a Martin. It's called the Tennessee Flat Top and one I want you to go over someday. It doesn't have a truss rod, is made with spruce top and mahogany back and sides. But more about that later. Don't know if I told you before but back in the late 60s I played a guitar that this guys great aunt I think, gave him and was in her attic 30 years. It was a small bodied Martin with the Martin name branded in the head stock. He took it to Nazareth, in 1968, their records went back 100 years and it wasn't in those records. They figured it was made the first 10-12 years of the factory. They offered him $1000 and a new D-28 but he didn't take the offer. I think D-28s were going for $650-$700 back then, a chunk of change. I was making $1 an hour then, a high school job. That little Martin vibrated your whole belly, one sweet extra vintage box! I've always been glad for the opportunity to play it. Wonder what it would be worth now? If it was mine I'd never sell it. So Thanks for a Great Video Randy! Hi-O from DaveyJO ps. The 69th, eh?
@RandySchartiger5 жыл бұрын
ah yes the Tennessee flat top box! :D those are also great guitars and resemble martin in many ways including sound, volume and tone! have your friend to check with "mandolin brothers" as I understand it they bought up a lot of gibson and martins old records and books, they may have something on that guitar or maybe could give him some direction to check. they mostly bought up gibson records but pretty sure they got some of martins older records too. thanks for tuning in brother Daveyjo! here's a link to me test driving the MMV if you wanna check it out, from 9 years ago! : kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4LPfIhqp7yJgLM

Mr. Schartiger _ A dear old woman gave me a 1930-ish Kaykraft guitar about 36 or 37 years ago as I was moving from the apartment just above hers (in fact she ran it out to the truck as we were pulling away with the last load ). The thing was strung left handed, and the fingerboard was half-off and it was in a general state of disrepair, which has since been remedied. Come to find out that she'd been in a jug band in the 30s here in Memphis. Saying all this to say the guitar had (and still has) a rattlesnake rattle in it. I've read quite a few theories about why folks put the things in their instruments, ranging from the practical (humidity-related) to the folkloric and downright witchy (keeps the hoodoo around it calmed down). Did you put that one in your Martin? What's your take on it?

I enjoyed this and found it interesting how you came to get these 2 Martin’s. I have 4 Gibson acoustics a J-15 burst, a J-35 a J-45 and a 1968 LGO with a spruce top not mahogany. I rebuilt the LGO and X braced it. Great for songwriting. I prefer the short 24.75 scale of Gibson acoustics. Do you have any Gibson acoustics? I really enjoy it when you work on Gibson acoustics even the one with the crazy neck set.

@RandySchartiger5 жыл бұрын
hey Josh thanks for tuning in here and commenting! yes very happy with the enlarged holes. I only recommend it if the guitar needs it. my MMV had a lot of lows and mids but lacked a little on the highs, after I enlarged the sound hole it was perfect to my ear. pretty much the same with my Tyminski, soloing in live jams it really makes that guitar cut thru the mix.

enlarging the sound hole give the guitar a little more high end, in other word increases the tone and makes the guitar louder, it helps a lot when jamming in a band, it helps the guitar cut thru the mix better especially when soloing. thanks for watching!
