A Tale of Three Cabins

Күн бұрын

Not the type of evening I expected. Making our way back to Northern Ohio we stay at a nice, but difficult to tow a trailer to camp. On top of a mountain with steep grades, sharp turns, and narrow roads, this is no place for a lost 18 wheeler who has just jackknifed his rig.
Video equipment:

DJI Pocket 2. amzn.to/3Td0wdc
DJI Action Cam. amzn.to/3CLGykd
MacBook Air. amzn.to/3CIejmu

That's a big tow bill. 😮 I too have great respect for a skilled towman. As a former State Trooper, I watched a lot of unbelievable recoveries over the years.

im a trucker and i dont see how in the hell this happens, as a trucker BEFORE u go anywhere u MUST KNOW how to get where your going and know every turn , u never leave anything to chance or hope , this is why back roads are crazy , dont listen to gps its designed to go the shortest route and only works if its functioning and knows where u are , but stay on the interstate as much as possible , most places can be reached in 1 or 2 turns of a interstate exit any more than that u might wanna call the place or the cops and ask how truckers get there

You know, I think these companies and trucking firms should be a lot more selective in who they hire. I’ve seen some who had no experience and should not be behind the wheel.

I was an owner operator truck driver for many years. I stopped driving enlarge part due to the idiots that are behind the wheels of these things these days. ive had my hood ripped on in truck stops, backed into in docks, sideswiped on highway. the new breed of drivers are just plum scary... im not in the least big surprised by this guy

As ex retired driver i must say this tow operator must only haul Honda Civics out of ditches (he need watch some tow recovery channels) driver was typical of today likely a foreign guy cant hardly speak English....thank you American system for this. When I drove I used a truckers Atlas it had truck route maps never relied on phone maps or trucks own computer system maps keep on interstates then STATE routes get me close then called customer for precise way in.....usually worked but hardest thing for people to do is give good simple directions they usually confuse you sometimes even themselves lol.

Thanks for sharing. Very interesting video. You’re exactly right the tow truck drivers are very underrated. I spent many late nights on scene long after our part of the job was done assisting the tow truck operator. Even if it was just keeping him safe or providing light. I don’t think I would have allowed my family to sit and watch as close as those people were in case the was an equipment failure. I’m surprised the tow operator didn’t carry cribbing on his truck.

We've all made a wrong turn as a truck driver, but you need to know when to stop and backup. I've had to backup a couple of miles. If it's not safe to backup or turn around it's time to call for law enforcement for help. Before you end up like this.

Well I drove for Carolina freight and yellow freight for 30 years and finished my career with my own truck for 14 years and I can say without a doubt I never went down a dirt road or any road that I had to back out . Never a wrong road on a mountain. I never went to a trucking school i was taught by men all over 30 years experience at the time. So thats that. In 44 years I never got a speeding ticket nor a accident. Did get a couple overweight though. Let's face it no one is taught like that anymore. The worst drivers I've incountered have be foreigners.

@thomaswilson8634 been driving for over 30 years, and I'll have to maybe call you out. You say you never made a wrong turn or missed a turn, I can't believe you. Unless you only went the same place very time. I've also never had an accident. Got 1 speeding ticket and 1 overweight. I've missed and made wrong turns several times. Going into different cities all the time it's not hard to do. Been on all kinds of roads making pickup and deliveries. But never got stuck or like this guy did. Be safe

@harryknutts8428 very true, I've had to call a couple of times for help. But not because I was stuck. I stopped before it happened. Just needed help in blocking traffic so I could backup or turn around. If someone says they never made or missed a turn, then they are a liar. Be safe

Everyone in here had better learn what happens when a major hurricane wipes properties clean, then get rebuilt but not remapped. You better learn local zoning/rezoning for commercial enterprise. It might help if you consider that YES some of these pickup's and deliveries will be on dirt roads, gravel roads, a small concrete slab turned into a commercial business, a narrow path and NO it will not be up and down I-55 and I-57 every week until you retire.

In defense of the truck driver gps is not always accurate. What I mean is, here in West Virginia I live in a remote area where four wheel drives is not a suggestion but an absolute requirement where I live. Especially in my area where our roads are not paved and when you get to the bottom of the hill past my house there’s barely room to pass an approaching vehicle. But GPS being what it is, you’d be surprised at how often gps will direct drivers to turn off the main road and come past my house. I know language barriers doesn’t help the Truck Drivers either. Just saying, sometimes we need to understand all options. Glad nobody got hurt. Tow truck driver was was very knowledgeable in this situation.

This is a serious issue with all drivers these days. They punch an address into GPS and blindly follow. No one looks at the route and uses their brain to think "Huh maybe that spot isn't good for me to travel down." And honestly I'm very unimpressed with that wrecker operator. Should have asked for more info up front, walked in, not lost his temper like he did, and absolutely most importantly should have been wearing safety gear. He may have gotten the job done but he was very unprofessional.

Always better to leave the semi at the entrance to the unknown and scout it out on foot before comitting the rig. Being lazy just cost at least $5,000, probably damaged the load, probably late for delivery and probably lost his job.

Yes, he should have known better, but by using his eyes and signs, not the gps. Some trucker GPS do not factor in the nature of the road, and simply avoid low bridges, and that's if they are known and reported. You can not rely on gps alone, and if you do, you're gonna have a rough time out there.

Its all about money! Poor guy was having a bad day to start with. No way 70,000 lbs. He is only allowed 80,000 gross. If he had 70,000 he was about 105,000 gross. About 25,000 lbs over loaded. Guessing the tractor and trailer is about 35,000 empty.

What need was there for the cop give the trucker a citation before the tow truck came?? Couldn't the cop tell the guy was having a terrible time as it was? It wasn't like the trucker was intentional in this.

This comment has absolutely nothing to do with who you want as president so I’m not trying to start that argument. But as a truck driver of 24 years the whole problem is they’re letting anyone and everyone come through our border. The amount of truck drivers on the roads now that can’t speak or understand English is mind blowing. FMCSA rule is you have to be able to understand, read and write English. The exams are in English. When you take the road test our highways and road signs are in English. So I want someone from the DMV to explain to me how these people are getting a CDL!

The Tow Operator was telling me that some of these shipping companies give a lot of these new drivers an abbreviated course. So abbrevieated that they basically don't have any backing skills. Once they arrive at a terminal another operator takes over and backs the truck into a loading dock. Scary.
