I’ve had the opposite experience driving tow truck. Some guys can’t back up to save their lives, even in a straight line with nothing to hit. I’ve offered to back their truck up after I got them unstuck and they practically leapt out of the drivers seat. No idea how they passed a road test. Must just pull into a yard and drop the trailer and the shunt truck takes it from there.

My company was based in Connecticut so NY and Boston were on the plate every day. We drove 53’ trailers with cab over sleepers. The deliveries I made every day required a super human effort with zero reward. NY was tight and congested with subway tracks overhead, everywhere. You really earn your money down in the city. Fun Fact: Those helper guys are useless. They hold a stop sign really great but don’t know a thing about what a driver is trying to do. Frustrating!

I will reaffirm what all of the other commenters have voiced. Your skill was absolutely extraordinary. You kept your cool under extremely trying circumstances. Why the detective had to intervene instead of offering a hand is a mystery to me. Drove for 40 years and never ceased to be surprised by how many people, including those receiving the material, rarely understood a tractor trailer needs lots and lots of room, especially a 53 footer with a sleeper and a long nose. They could have moved both the dumpster and the orange barrier on the sidewalk sooner than they did, the skateboarder who darted behind you should have waited and beware of customers who say, "We get big trucks here all the time". They are frequently unaware of differences in trailer lengths and wheel bases. Had the feeling your power steering pump was hurting, judging by the sound. Take a bow for doing about the best urban backing I've had the pleasure to witness. Kudos. Trucker tip: I found, after having endured particularly difficult experiences like yours, it helped me calm down a little if I struck up a conversation with someone-anyone about a topic unrelated to trucks. Sounds silly but it diverted attention away from my own aggravation. Try it. Take care.

I currently drive an f450 w/ a 40ft gooseneck we use to deliver trusses with and I can feel some of that stress with these construction sites. Large home developments with small roads and sharp turns not meant for trucks plus dozens of trucks and other things parked in the road and some. I have been getting a lot of steps in checking sites out before driving down a road to get stuck for who knows how long. Good Job, I had to watch that all the way through. I love that pulling back out forward is at least less stressful than the backin was usually. haha

I would have not been able to do this. impressive. and your right, they should have used 2 or 3 smaller trucks for this, it's insane. but you made it. that says a lot

The Lab in the sleeper was so cool. Dogs can bring humanity back to an intense situation. Glad this driver had laborers that assisted him. What a great video. This driver has skill as a therapist in his future. Must have had great parents.

I've been in similar situations and I hear you. Good job. I am retired now but I felt like holding that steering wheel. A piece of advice for less experienced drivers: Never do a favor to your dispatcher because it will never be returned to you. Especially for NYC.

That was incredible driving, I’ve seen a lot of competition driving and you are right among the best. As for the cop, I’m sure he wouldn’t give up that easy chasing a bad guy, so I don’t know why he figured you would give up that easy. Nice driving!! Ya got some MAD skills. Lotsa walkers for ya too. I have walked back many trucks into construction sites and good drivers are hard to come across. Communication between walkers and drivers helps a lot.
