For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. (2 Peter 2:20)
Pastor Mike Fabarez does a verse-by-verse Bible study through the book of 2 Peter.

These passages brought me to my knees. I backslid for a period of time but recently came back when my dad passed. In spite of parables like the lost lamb and the prodigal son...I felt I was beyond repentance or that maybe I had gone too far. I cried for days and was just broken at the thought that I was lost forever without hope... the enemy still tries to use these verses (especially Heb 6.4) to instill doubt from time to time. Thank you for breaking this down for us!!!

They the false teachers are like animals bred for destruction. Peter described them as animals in a few different ways. What I love about this passage is the fact that Peter makes it clear that GOD saves HIS people (righteous by faith) FROM the pit of the wicked. Even mentioning Lot as an example. Hey, we were all neophytes at one point. I was among them that got enticed. God rescued me.

CBC is not my home church and I will grieve the loss of these morning and evening videos if and when they end. They are so easy to watch and so informative that, for the first time in my life, I have opened my Bible every single day. Thank you for that.

Thank you Pastor Mike for clarifying the "they" in this passage. How sad that there are those who have seen the benefits of being a child of Christ and then turn away from it. May we be faithful to follow Him and hold fast to the end. I appreciate that you have been giving us such in depth study during this time. Thank you for that.

And again Peter’s concern for the unsteady souls is that they will be ineffective and bring disrepute to The Way of Truth. It’s the worst thing we could do.

pm the arguments applied to false teachers apply to unregenerate persons sitting in the pews just as you note. That is why it is hard to understand how false teachers who are wolves in sheep's clothing can be considered as having had a true relationship with Christ to a point of escaping their defilements to begin with. But I understand the practical point is that everyone should examine him or herself to make sure that their salvation is sure and true and they are really a Christian with faith and trust placed in Christ for the atonement of our sins and that we will repent of our sins and submit to the only name in heaven or earth by which a man must be saved--namely, the name of Jesus Christ.

An unbeliever cannot examine themselves to see if they are in the Faith. Just think about how impossible that would be. And a believer, if they examine themselves, are a believer! For they wouldn’t be doing so otherwise. What is a person going to do, examine themselves and find out they aren’t saved? Why would an unbeliever even bother?

@Jonathan Grandt not true unbelievers self examine themselves often. Think of self-examination and new years vows that follow, think of remorse that leads to death like judas. Think of remorse by criminals who get caught or drug alcohol users who examine and change their ways as part of 12 step plan. None of these examinations in itself demonstrates repentance that reflects a regenerative mind and heart and faith and trust in Christ alone for salvation.

Thank you for you explanation, but I can't fully agree that 2 Peter 2:20 is speaking "only" about the state of the false teacher. It appears to also include those who are once again entangled and overcome by the world due to the lies of the false teacher. It seems to include those who were deceived by the promise of freedom (v.19) and those who followed their way of sensuality (v.2). With all due respect, it feels like some of your description was speaking out of both sides of your mouth. On one hand, you indicate the fruit of true conversion is a life that withstands and holds fast. Yet on the other hand, you indicate failing to hold fast is proof of false teaching or having never been converted. This causes the warnings of the Bible to become unnecessary because those who truly believe will always believe. So those who don't believe prove they have never truly believed yet. Why tell people to hold fast to something they cannot let go of? Why tell people, above all, to guard their heart? Why tell Christians to take up the whole armor of God if the attacks of the devil are not a true threat? Why would Jesus warn churches in revelation about spitting them out of his mouth, removing their lampstand, blotting them out of his book of life, and many other statements if he didn't really mean it? Why encourage someone to be a doer of the word and not just a hearer if this is not a valid exhortation? Hebrews 6 speaks of someone who partook of the holy spirit and tasted of the heavenly gift. Hebrews 10:26 describes someone who continues sinning willfully after experiencing "sanctification" by the blood of the covenant, which they treated as a common or unholy thing. These statements are more indicating a true believer, who for some reason allowed themselves to be deceived, hardened their heart, and turned away from the very God who sanctified them. The entire new testament is filled with warnings not to walk away and exhortations to hold fast to our faith. Why say such things if letting go is impossible and walking away, only means you never knew to begin with? I think we need to be fully biblical and not just preach what sounds pretty. "Once saved always saved" sounds pretty, but it makes the bulk of the new testament irrelevant. Again, this is not an attack on you personally. I appreciate your content. But I believe we need to take God's word for what it says. Otherwise, we can unintentionally give people a false sense of security or a license to continue in sin because they once believed as a child, and nothing they do in life afterwards can change that.

2 Peter's gospel isn't even ours, the body of Christ. The gospel of the kingdom should never be confused with Paul's gospel. We must remember that before Paul came along, Peter's apostolic authority started at Jerusalem, while Paul's gospel began at Antioch. Peter preached the gospel of the kingdom, while Paul's gospel was to both Jew and Gentile, concerning the dispensation of the grace of God. 2Tim.2:15 is so important. The church must learn to rightly divided the Word. I say this because you're totally secure in Christ in accordance to 1Cor.15:1-4; Eph.2:8,9. You can't lose salvation, that's impossible because you have been sealed by that Holy Spirit of promise unto the day of our redemption.

Until the end in Hebrews is for the Jews . The book of Hebrews is written to the Jews who became Christian’s and now because of persecution they are wanting to revert back to Judaism . The book of Hebrews is like Matthew and the book of Acts. . These are transitioning books of the Bible . The book of Hebrews was written approximately around 96 Ad. Written to the converted Jew but some things apply to ( the now Christian ) and some things don’t ., plus their is tribulation passages in Hebrews .

Same goes for the book of Hebrews. The book of Hebrews were written to the Hebrews, James gospel was written to the twelve tribes of Israel, James 1:1. Falling to rightly divided, leads to a false gospel, which leads to denominalism, which leads to false gospel, religious tiers, never being saved in accordance to, Matthew 7 the Lord, Lord crowd at the Great White Throne judgement. Believe on Christ alone in accordance to 1Cor.15:1-4 to settle the issue of what it means to be justified and saved forever. Man makes salvation easy, God makes it easy. Christ did the hard part for our salvation. Man again has made salvation hard and confusing because of his failure to rightly divided the word of truth, 2 Tim. 2:15 understanding what was written to Israel vs what was written to the church, the body of Christ.

@@domainmora2451 Calvinism is a works based Salvation . Salvation is only by believing that Jesus Christ paid for your sins at the cross his death burial and resurrection 3 days later. 1 Corin. 15:1-4 Rom 4:4-6 , gal 2:16. Therefore we can conclude that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ period.
