loved staying in Prati - but I love walking LOL I wouldn't want to do it in the summertime! Prati had the best food we eat touring italy and the least amount of tourists vs the most beautiful walks. It was the lowest cost for eating out as well. I wanted to be away from touristy places and just visit them - this worked out great for us.

This is good information! I have been to Italy 13 times, usually going to Rome, and each time we have a wonderful visit. Crime there is mostly pickpockets, and yes, we have stayed in the Esquilino area many times, and it is more seedy, but also easy to get to the metro, etc. The last time I was there in November in 2023, I stayed at the Hotel Forum, which was very nice close to the Forum of course, but we walked all over creation visiting 33 churches in 8 days, walking 5-7 miles each day. What a great experience seeing sights I had never seen before and having a tour guide tell us what we were looking at. Previously, I had relied on my wife's relatives showing us Rome, but since I speak little Italian, I probably missed much. Learning some Italian is a good way to get around, which now I can say with translators and with my wife who speaks fluently, it all works out well. Italians love it when you at least try to speak Italian.

Thank you for your advice - as always. We stayed in Esquilino the first (and only - but hopefully not the last) time we went to Rome in 2018 & loved it. I guess it depends on your accommodation - but we had a beautiful Air BNB, kind & helpful host, & felt very safe & comfortable there. Maybe it has changed since then? It was a great walking distance to everything we wanted to do. We appreciate your opinion very much, as you know Rome better that we do. Can't wait to see your next one 🙂

We stayed recently in the Trevi neighbourhood and it was fabulous. In an apartment in a quiet little alley just around the corner from Trevi Fountain. The fountain is so busy but where we were was lovely and quiet. The area is so close to everything - we only took a cab to the Vatican, but then walked back. And lots of dining options just a minute or two away. ey

Been to Rome a couple of dozen or more times over the years 1973 to 2023 and all bar once stayed in a great little pension in the via dell'Olmata just to the south of SM Maggiore. This is almost the dividing line between your "seedy" and the rest of the Esquiline heading to the Subura area. You are correct in pointing out the "seedy" area adjacent to the station, it also goes towards via Napoleone III and down towards the P Vittorio Emanuele. It became more seedy over the years since '73, but there is an effort to clean up the area. There is now an "upmarket" food hall in the station, and there have always been lots of fun bars and cafes in the area. Overall, I have never felt unsafe, just have maintained the vigilance I would in any city, but I would not let my daughter walk around alone after dark, particularly in the couple of blocks to north and south of station. As for the Vatican area, agree it is away from most of the action. Have often thought of staying in the Jewish Quarter, but end up back at via dell'Olmata, force of habit and familiarity I suppose.

@@RozierRoma I really should I suppose, but "my" pensione is just so comfortable and familiar. I know the buses and trams to and from, the people are warm and friendly, the barista in "our" local cafe remembered (un espresso senza zucchero, si?) us from our previous trip, and the rooftop has great views, sitting with a glass of wine and dinner as the sun sets compensates more than enough for the adjacent area's issues.

We recently subscribed to your channel and we really appreciate all of the content you have provided your subscirbers. We are going with our parents of 82 and 81 years old to Rome and we are staying in Hotel Labelle (Via Cavour 310, Rione Monti, 00184 Rome, Italy) on March 19 - 22, 2024. Please answer the following questions: 1. We are planning on getting the 48 hour ROMA pass without the museum for 12.50 Euro. Wondering if its worth getting the 48 hour ROMA pass for 32 Euro. We were considering getting this so that its less walking but also wondering if the Bus comes often. 2. Are the P-Stop accessible if you don't have the ROMA Pass? 3. Based on where we are staying, which place would you recommend for us to eat without it being a tourist trap. 4. Is it safe taking the Bus or walking at night given where we are staying, based on your opinion. 5. Since my parents are 81 and 82 years old, I read that they can get in to the Top attractions for free, is this true, if so what is the process? Any other advise or recommendation would surely be appreciated.
@RozierRoma
@RozierRoma 11 ай бұрын
Personally I think it is best just to use Tap & Go for transportation snd pay as you go tot he attractions. The pass can be a good deal for some people but most overpay and do not use in enough to justify the purchase. I am not sure what a P stop is? Lots of good choices to eat out. I recommend using Google Reviews to check before eating anywhere. Always check! You never want to say afterwards I should have checked the reviews! Overall Rome is a very safe plave to walk around even late at night. The only real problem is pickpockets and they mainly take place on the Metro and crowded busses. Do not tour with your passport on you. Limit cash and cards and pay attention and you should be fine. Many attractions are free for over 65, just show ID at ticket booth and they will give you the entry tickets. Have a great time! Scott

TERMINI Area has some good hotels on Cavour and tons to see like gorgeous Museum Massimo, the Baths of Diocletion and Michelangelo's Basilica , Santa Maria of the Angels and the home of the National Museum of Rome as well as Palazzo Massimo housing the famous discuss thrower, the boxer and other antiqueties! Stayed at Hotel Meditterano on Cavour a number of times and found it to be a great location. The Piazza della Republica street is also one street over offering upscale shopping. Further, Rome is very walkable and this area is within a 15 minute, easy direct walk to Trajan's market ruins and the major sights! Have also stayed at an Apartment off Via Fornaci near the Vatican and know there is a bus station in that area with Bus 64 running on Via Fornaci every 15 minutes or so to the center of Rome. It is a crowded bus and one has to always be cautious of pickpockets on on public transportation and crowds everywhere in Rome! To get back to the apartment after sunset, i would always take a cab back at a cost of 15 Euros and get dropped off at front door of the Apartment!

Getting something near Largo Argentina or Monti neighborhoods or Campo D'Fiori, even Piazza Navona would be better. Best of luck and have a great trip! Thanks for making these wonderful videos. Heading to Rome in a month or so. I found a beautiful Air BnB in Esquilino near Piazza Vittorio. Which seems to be bordering the Monti neighborhood. I hear you saying a little distance away from Termini station makes a big difference (13 min walk to Termini one way, 15 min walk to Colosseum the other way even though Termini seems much closer than Colosseum on the map). I am traveling with my teenage daughter and have slight safety concerns after watching this video regarding Esquilino. When you say seedy…is the neighborhood unsafe to walk at night? I read every review of my Air BnB rental and no one mentioned any safety concerns. Reviews have very very high average on this particular BnB. Is it less safe on one side of Termini station versus the other? I get the feeling Monti is much safer, but it also seems to be so close to where we are staying. Appreciate your advice. I still have time to cancel and find something else if absolutely necessary thanks!

No there are really no safety concerns to worry about. Theft takes place in most area. That is the only real problem. No shootings, stabbing or other violent crime to worry about. Right around the station just too many drifters so to speak. Moving away even a little helps a lot. I once stayed in an airbnb next to Piazza Vittorio and having the metro right there was great. I made a video about the metro and Rome's sites if you want to watch. I think it will help with getting around. here is the video.kzbin.info/www/bejne/hl7Nnp-HnZefj9Esi=9kWCL__N5LVqf9LU

Great to hear you are heading to Rome. Rome is a great city and can be enjoyed from just about anywhere. This is my opinion. I am sure your travel agent deals with places all over the world and I am not sure how familiar he is with Rome. As it is your first time to home I think you will enjoy it better being closer to the major sights and not have to rely on taxis, Metro and busses for everything. There are several great areas I would recommend. Monti, Largo Argentina area, Campo dei Fiori area, Trastevere, Piazza Navona area all make a great base to visit Rome. If you want to stay close to the train station as you are using Rome as a base to see other cities I think Monti area is your best bet. If you make changes I know it is a bit of a hassle but it will be worth it. Are you staying in a hotel? Have you considered an Airbnb?
