2 rail O Scale 2017

Yup, I know it's 2018; but I had intended to finish this video last year. Other commitments got in the way.
From my 2016 video, I realized that I have a face for radio. So I don't appear on camera on this one.

Excellent video. I'm just in the pre- pre- planning stage! Lol. I know, I know...start DOING! I had settled on an HO switching layout to start, but now...maybe O switching! I'm 54 and even HO is getting smaller and smaller. O scale just might be the ticket! Thanks for the inspiration, you and these fellow modelers. Take care...😊👍

Hello Dude: I will echo the mantra - get off of the couch and build! I did not start my layout until I was 55. Saturday the 19th, 2020 it came down because of a move into a single level house due to deteriorating health (I'm now late 60's). The layout was incomplete. Although the layout was saved, so much damage was done in the disassembly that I doubt that it will get reassembled. So don't wait, your status can change at any time. Build in sections that can be disassembled and reassembled easily.

Nice layouts! I've only ever really seen 3 rail o'scale and while nice I never liked the unrealistic look of the track, but these layouts look awesome if I had the room I'd do a 2-rail O'scale layout maybe one day.

It does not necessarily take a lot of room to do a very nice and satisfying 2-rail layout. Look at the 'P48' video posted on my channel. This video highlights Jim Canter's sectional 8'x16' Proto 48 layout. It has city and country running, mainline and switching and you can keep 3 trains going at once (I know, I've done it). It also has #8 and #10 turnouts for a realistic look.

Hello Mr. Terrance! I'm just impressed with this video( 2 Rail O Scale 2017)! Even though is 4 years old, I just came across with it about a week ago, and simply can not stop watching it, when I have a chance! Specifically I'm interested in the method for building the retaining walls in the last layout in the video, although the previous ones are absolutely awesome! They are all great! I have quite a few mth equipment and subway sets in O scale and I need to get some learning curve in making something similar for my O scale subway layout/diorama! Would you share the recipe for sculpting it? Or at least some suggestion? Be Well, RR

I would love a 2 rail o scale layout than an ho scale. the main reason is that with bigger cars and equipment, you can detail them more, makes it easier to get to things that are hard to get to in ho scale. dont get me wrong I love ho, but its like most though, I just dont have the room, and o scale stuff is waaay more expensive.

Very interesting and good layout choices. I fear O scale will become extinct though. O scalers all have gray hair and the layouts are all set in the 50s. Of course you'd need a huge space to do today's long trains and equipment in O scale. Anyway, thanks for making this video. I enjoyed it.

Thank you for the comments. Some of us are trying to revitalize O Scale. The 2018 National convention was such an effort. 2020 was scrubbed, but 2021 should be a great convention. The O Scale King's will be launching a new effort called 'O Scale Central', watch the OSK website. Yes, O scalers, and model railroaders in general, are getting on in years. The problem is recognized and being worked. However, O Scale need not take up much space, as I have demonstrated in my other videos.

Can I voice a dissenting opinion? At the 34:00 mark Gary Ingle talks about how his rock faces that go to the floor create a better foreground for the models. I'm sorry Gary, for me the sheer verticality of your cliffs is too extreme. I think it detracts for the modeling, much like over-sized flanges and high-gloss paint jobs. I appreciate your artistic technique, I just don't share you vision.

Dave: Like many other things in model railroading, we have to selectively compress. It certainly would be nice to have all of our rock faces, hills, cuts and mountains not exceed the natural angle of repose. Unfortunately, no one (that I know of) has enough space to do that. So we do the best that we can in the space that we have to give the viewer the impression that the face is not too vertical. I remember an article in MR (I think) from many years back that talked about the angle of repose. It's a nice to have, that cannot always be achieved.
