People can’t seem to understand that work output can be measured. Work is still getting done, more of it actually because they don’t have the commute and distractions. Money is being saved because office electricity is not being used. Lights and HVAC are off. The workers pay for their own electricity and internet. They are not compensated for it. Telework requires an agreement that work will continue, and you will be closely monitored, or you can be forced back to the office or fired. Remote monitoring software is being used to spy on these employees work habits. It’s watched far more closely than in the office. A lot of government work is computer based. Like accounting and records keeping. It’s not an assembly line… Experienced employees are leaving the government on retirement and they aren’t even hiring to attrition. If you think your wait at the VA or SS hotlines is long now. Just wait a few months… You’ll be dead and gone before you get through.

But for many, going back just means going back to getting to work at 8AM (if no incident happens during the commute that makes people late) only to team up and go get coffee or breakfast at a business walking distance away, lots of chatting (at water coolers, hallways, stairwells, cubes/personal offices), not doing as much work because of bandwidth congestion that’s making applications slow, going to lunch at nearby restaurants that takes 70-80 mins, leaving the office 30 mins early to get to a nearby Happy Hour, and turning the computer off at 5PM never to be on it again until the next day. All of that doesn't happen at the house. For people in fields that are project-based, it just means going back to 40 hour workweeks instead of 50+ working from home (no one is going to be working past 8PM anymore when they have to commute home and get up the next day to dress and commute back). That has happened to a lot of companies in the private sector and that will happen to a good number of federal agencies.

There are some areas that need to be improved in the Federal workforce. I saw federal fulltime employees being overworked by given those 24x7 oncall duties, while the contractors sat around confused about what to do next because they weren't being given assignments. And they didn't want to pay hourly overtime for oncall duties, so the contractors had close to a normal working schedule while the fulltimers were taking the brunt because they could be counted on to not leave before retirement. They have remote monitoring software. You people haven’t got a clue at how closely remote work is monitored. You could never get away with shadow employment. But they don’t get monitored in the office, at all. When you are tied to a computer system all day, doing work, that work can be measured. They know exactly what you are and aren’t doing. In the office, you can take extended restroom breaks, you can talk around the water cooler, you can plan meetings to gab on and on with no point. Telework is an incentive that they don’t want to lose by screwing off. The real perk is the lack of a commute and less office distractions. People who telework actually put more time into their job than people that go into the office. They actually have to warn people because they are afraid of people working off the clock. That violates labor law. It also can contribute to burnout. The reason I know all of this is because my company makes the software that is used for monitoring remote workers…
