great stuff! a bit thick on the theory for my level...but ill get there. example, I know what makes a major chord a minor, lower the third a half step - i have no idea what makes any scale major or minor. the third not in that scale is a half step lower? no clue. really good stuff again. you are helping build confidence in themselves, speed, knowledge and technique will come, but its hard to get any if you think you suck...

+yourguitarsage Uuuuuugh minor keys, im glad I took music theory last year in school while they had it at lest I know what you are saying but minor keys were the bane of that class! I have not committed the time yet to checking out your website yet. As a quick question I am lost on where to go on. Since August I have been teaching myself guitar and it has been going well. I can play a simple version of Canon in D and More than Words by Extreme. I know all my major chords and minors. I know A couple of 7's which I like to barr (I dont really care much for voicing as long as I get the chord like I'll use Am barred for trickey ones that I can't play open.) I know this one jazzy chord I dont know its name but in open its (6-1) e-a-e-g#-c#-e which I just move around based on scale degree for some simple jazzy sounds. My big question is where to progress to in my learning. Also I see you wrote a book about mastering the guitar and where that was available and what your course is like/ how much does it cost.

Whenever I practice anything whether it be chords or scales and be mindful of playing on my fingertips as taught I noticed that my pinkie won't go straight down but tends to roll outwards. Is this normal and something I just need to keep practicing at or is this just how some players play? Even when I physically try to correct it, it still fights me and stays rolled out so that instead of being hitting the string straight on my pinkie hits the string on its side.

You keep saying pentatonic...but what you are playing is a minor pentatonic...there is a major one also. In fact pentatonic scale just means a five note scale...take the major scale and drop the 4th and the 7th and you have a major pentatonic. Start the exact same scale on the 6th of that scale and you have the related minor pentatonic.

I'm confused... another youtuber taught the pentatonic as open e, 3,5,6,7 on the first string then 5,7 on second and 5,7,9 on third. Then 7,9 on fourth. Then 8,10,12 on fifth and finally 10,12 on the sixth (high e)... I May have said the string names opposite.... as high e is first and low e is sixth? 😅

there are 8 notes in a major scale , and when you get to 8 you repeat the scale going up in octaves. so the 2nd note of the major scale is the 9th. the 9 th is an octave higher than the 2nd. i'm just starting guitar but this makes a lot more sense on piano.

Is it possible to learn how to play guitar simply by watching guitar videos, in other words, free lessons? I recognize the idea that a teacher can spot flaws in playing and attempt to correct them, but don't "flaws" become an asset OR a style of playing? So...what are the advantages to having a "live" teacher?

Hey Eric, I purchased your course on udemy last week and have been working through it, but in the last lecture I watched(introduction to metronome) you talk about knowing scales yet there are no videos before that on how to learn the scales. Are the scales part of another course? I only started playing a few weeks ago and everyone says the scales are the best thing to practice.

Thanks a lot. You've made my life easier telling that F#m pentatonic = A major pentatonic.

Mind=Blown. Especially the 9`s and 7`s in a chord. All of that circulates around a major scale

That guitar sounds way better than the jumbo,,, it could just be new strings but I don't think so. Is that a Takamine?

Thanks Jay! Yes it is. It might be new strings, because next to the jumbo body in my studio, there is no comparison.

YourGuitarSage it really sounds good, every note tone and interval seem to ring out but not like a piano as my Tinker does,,,, I like both but your D28 is the very best

when someone tells you the key of a song but only gives you a letter without specifying major or minor, can one assume it's major?

Yes, if THEY know what they are talking about, usually. Same with chords.
