We wanted to update the info on this video. A lot of the family has reached out and even sent pictures of Gertrude and Andrew Marshall. We will be doing a update video next week. But until then here's some info. They are buried in the cemetery we were at in this video. Chloe as she was called, is a grave we showed as well up there. Its in the next video about the cemetery itself. She was one of the daughters at the time when they were killed and suffered depression and mental issues because of it. Justine another daughter was only 14 at the time of the murders. Willie, the killer did 11 years. On getting out Polly, the daughter got back with him because he threatened to kill the rest of the family and he was very controlling. I cant imagine the hell she went through. At that time domestic abuse wasn't really taken serious, really still isn't. Can you imagine sleeping and living with your parents killers? The fear she must have felt daily. The children are all deceased now but many grand children remain. Some that have reached out to us to give us this info. Gerdie and Andy were said to be amazing. loving people and the grandchildren are sad to have been denied knowing them.

I had never heard of a shooting taking place in a school in 1938. This was an awful domestic case of the estranged husband hunting Gertie and Andy Marshall's daughter. He had to have been in a rage to kill the her parents. So cruel. I am glad you asked about the Grave Yard. Very close by. The students in the school when Gertie and Andy Marshall were shot to death, were in my mother's and father's age group. They graduated in 1939. I would love to visit the south. People, especially older people are a valuable source of information.

crazy, vengeful people have been hurting people at schools for a very long time. In 1926 a lone, mean, sick man blew up the bath school house in bath, michigan. he also had a rifle with him that morning. 45 people died that morning.

The murders happened in the old part of the building that was torn down, the flat spot where you drove up the hill. I remember being told by the custodian at the time I was a student there. I’m fairly certain I remember him telling me that the man killed himself. I’ll ask around and see if I can find the graves (Maguire grave)

Referencing the Find A Grave situation, there are a lot of errors and sometimes people get testy when you change it. One lady had my uncle buried at an older cemetery that was part of the same parish but of a much earlier generation. She was like are you sure he's not at Blank cemetery? I was pretty exasperated at that point but assured her I was at his funeral and burial.

Example, my husband's aunt was known as Louise. I didn't know her name was Gertrude until a few days before she died when she was 98 years old. Andrew and Gertrude Marshall is my grandparents. They are buried up behind the school somewhere. The story doesn’t have all the information but their next to youngest daughter was my mom Justine Marshall. She was 14 when they got killed. Gertrude was a Maynard before marrying my grandfather. I was told Willie spent 11 years for murdering them and when he got out his wife Polly took him back because he put death threats on her family if she didn’t. All their children are deceased They still have grandkids living. I am one of them. Sad story. I do have pictures of them both I got when my mom passed away. Just wish I had not been denied the privilege of knowing my grandparents. I was told they were wonderful people. On one side of my family, we are Parsons and go all the way back to Parsons, West Virginia. But my great-grandfather, Romance Parsons, has Romance, West Virginia named after him. His first son was born on Valentine's Day in Jackson County named Dexter and he married a Bonnie painter. Bonnie's dad was a constable out in Sissonville area and was shot and killed on Cicerone Route in 1922. I didn't hear the backstory until much later, and that was that Grandpa Painter apparently was fooling around with Mrs. Gibson. Although Grandpa Painter helped George Gibson get out of jail by standing up for him in court, Gibson lay in wait and shot Grandpa Painter, killing him. I figure there's more to it but people didn't talk about things like that. It was probably too devastating for them in 1922. My great-grandmother took to her bed and became an invalid, we faint due to the trauma and humiliation. My GG-grandfather came, her father came over from Ireland, and I believe there was some stigma about being irish, too.

I found a marriage license of Elizabeth Marshall aka "Lizzie McQuire" married to Arvid Stevens in Pikesville Ky. Sept.12,1923 she is listed as divorced. Parents are listed as Andy and Gerdo Marshall. She later moved to Wise, Clintwood, Dickerson Virginia. This too is weird for her to take on the name McQuire if it were not. Things do not add up. Great video and history, you guys do a great job thank you. Second thought....maybe the two Marshall girls married McQuire boys.

That was so sad. Also to find their graves. I grew up partially in Virginia and military. I found a grave in the woods before and on the outside of someone’s fence. Weird spots for graves.

I graduated there at Lenore in 1979. And used to walk through that graveyard sometimes. Some McGuires lived up on Right fork of laurel creek about two miles from the school.

Unfortunately he got out. His wife Polly was forced to live with him until his dead out of fear that he would kill the rest of her family.

Thanks for posting the video. They where my great grand parents. All most of the family has seen so far is a article found from a newspaper online. Which sounds like the one you had since you referred to the posse and him turning himself in.

They were buried there because that is where the cemetery was located. Lots of people are buried in that cemetery.

I appreciate you guys for doing this extremely hard work for us to enjoy and learn history. You're absolutely right about how difficult it can be to get the correct information. Plus driving to the locations, record, edit, and upload the videos. I enjoyed this video and thank you so much for all that you do. Peace and blessings.

Pollie was listed as Head of Household in the 1940 Census and separated in the 1950 Census. She died in Nov. 1986 in Lenore, WV. In the 1940 Census, Willie was listed as being in the West Virginia State Prison. Willie supposedly died in Oct. 1974 in Lenore, WV.

Great that the cemetary is right there and the neighbor brought you to it. You might try holding a flashlight against the headstones to create shadows in the etching to facilitate reading those old names. Thanks for adventure!

It did not close in 1987, and it was for 5th grade through seniors. I was born in 1991, and attended this school for a short time when i was in 5th grade before we switched to the k-8th grade. The year it closed was around 2003.
